Was the prince of some far away empire, which is a lot less impressive than it sounds due to the emperors questionable habits. Expecting a life of leisure, but always had an idle interest in magic. When the empire crumbled and he managed to escape he decided to travel so far away that he'd never been found and make himself a new life as a wizard, which is working out well so far. Fat and lazy, but talented.
Possession: An extremely ornate book in his native language, what it's about is not revealed but he reads from it every night.

Carden arched an eyebrow from where he, against all odds, leisurely reclined in an uncomfortably hard-backed wooden chair. His icy blue eyes reflected back the light of the room from beneath a mop of curly brown hair, seeming almost luminescent. With a placid smile on his face, the young man patiently listened to the woman before him.

When his turn to speak came, Carden abruptly sat forward, the front two legs of his chair slamming into the ground with a resounding CRASH. He opened his mouth to speak and then paused, mouth slightly agape as he watched her twirl the crystal that hung about her neck.

It was a fairly simple offer, really, and Carden wondered why she seemed so irritated about making it. Had he inadvertently committed some grievous insult to her person that he was unaware of? It was times like these that he wished that Malkin had forced him to go out and socialize amongst the other apprentices more, for this woman, Immolatia he believed her name was, clearly knew more about him than he knew of her.

A second later, his eyes flicked up to meet hers, and an easy smile spread across his face once more. "Of course this is no task one can do alone, and of course I intend to win...whatever that may entail," he trailed off for a moment, muttering the last few words before abruptly flashing a grin, "And, of course, I will gladly work with you. Though...you do sell yourself short and are not as in need of my partnership as you say, I'm sure."

 Nirur was the son of traveling merchants. They weren't particularly prosperous, but had more then enough to get by. His mother's favorite place was a semi-quiet settlement along a trade route; they frequently rested there for weeks at a time. He befriended Ochita in this settlement, both being the same age.

When he was ten, tragedy struck: Bandits attacked, stealing a valuable load of spices and mortally wounding his mother. His father could no longer bear the life of a merchant, and moved to a city to work as a carpenter. He turned to alcoholism to cope. A year later, he struck Nirur in an alcohol-fueled rage. Recognizing his mistake in the morning, and what he had become, he mournfully apprenticed Nirur to an alchemist and moved away.

His best efforts at organizing stock was for naught. The elderly alchemist constantly belittled his every effort, and insulted him frequently. He was "too stupid" and "too clumsy" to be allowed near his master during the brewing process. None of the patrons intervened. After two years, he was an emotional wreck. A shopkeeper knocked down a shelf of potions; he was blamed. The alchemist threw him into the street. A magical outburst saved him from being trampled by horses. Malkin the Black witnessed it and recognized his magical potential, taking him on as an apprentice.

His new master forced him to regain a sense of self-worth before he began training. With it back, he lost his trust in humanity: Not one person treated him as anything other then a drain on society when he was apprenticed to the alchemist. Somehow, he had fallen into the routine of cooking and cleaning for Carden Aglaeca and Malkin. He felt that Carden was Malkin's favorite, and hated him for it, as well as his effortless life up to that point. He dared not complain for fear of incurring Malkin's wrath, instead he chose to quietly enact petty acts of revenge that Carden barely seemed to notice.

When the trials were announced, he was certain that this was his chance. After becoming a councilman, he would be able to first humiliate, and then destroy, his rival. Last year he had learned that Ochita had managed to get himself apprenticed to Master Alama the Bard. They had exchanged a few letters since. After over-salting the last breakfast he cooked for Carden, he set out to meet with his childhood friend, sure that the two of them would be able to win out against the competition.

His past has made him fairly paranoid; few are worthy of trust.

Your most valued possession: A poorly carved wooden ring given to him by his mother. It being child sized, he keeps it safely inside an interior pocket of his clothing.

I can't help but feel like Carden should be under the impression that he and Nirur get along well. Obviously that's almost bound to end in tragedy.
