Wait, don't we tax the peasants on just about everything they do?

Yes, but you have to have inns so that people spend their money so it can be taxed out of them. So you need, say, five inns to get the five hundred income from a town.

Well, the inns mentioned on the list could be ones out in the wilderness along the roads.

These are inns for wandering travelers, so it would make sense for them to be slightly away from the rest of civilization.  And guys, please, use quotes.  It's really difficult trying to follow what you guys are posting about.

You're assuming we've got a cohesive conversation happening. A false assumption, as it turns out.

Anyway, thank you for using quotes.  I'm just waiting for Dwarmin to read and respond, and then I'll get to the rest of the rules.  I'll probably copy/paste onto my first post for easy reading.

edit: I've gotta sleep goodnight and try not to make 13 more pages, k?

OOC:I might let Kinsen live, if he can make maps. :P

No really!

Hmm, the *best* thing about our navy, is it's mostly militia, and they pay their own wages most of the time. When marshalled by the crown, however, each sailor would get a footmans salary of 1 gold to compensate for lost wages.

The Barque has about thirty crew...I would guess they would earn at least a lttle more than a footman.

Add 250+ for general upkeep a medium vessel

15 gold upkeep=1 Marines/Naval Crew

Which would set us back 700 income

".. Fine, new and current necromancers will have at least 1 year of surveilance, where if they do anything considered 'evil', the collar will be able to explode them. However, if a necromancer has done no evil, and has found a way to be good for at least 5 years, then the exploding collar comes off, because it shows that they have no interest in doing evil."

"You guys should run I can hold them off, but only for so long." with that Asgard lept forward slicing the throat of the beast infront of him in seconds, and as the beast fell to the ground Asgard was already at the next with his sword through its heart, and as he turns to finish the third one of them hits his arm, and a loud crunch is heard as his arm breaks. Leaping back he throws the sword,a dn it goes straight through the creatures skull. As he lands back with his allies he says "They are much faster than I thought."

My lord a team of the adventurers we hired have tracked one of the beasts to it's lair. May I have permission to follow them and evaluate their work?

Spoiler: 'd for length (click to show/hide)
I have a few problems with this:

1. As long as the foot soldiers are armored and well trained, then they should be paid twice as much as the archers, but, if they're just spearmen, I have a source that says they should be paid about two-thirds as much as archers. So it kind of depends on what they are, exactly.

2. Don't forget about farms as a source of income. A pre-industrial economy is based more on food-production than goods-production. At this time, they most likely did have sales taxes, but the medieval economy was based on land taxes.

3. It doesn't makes sense for a castle to make money. It might cost some money, considering it houses royalty with expensive tastes. A castle might be used to house military, or necessary for the creation of unit or something like that.

Kadzar consults with the leader of the dragon-slaying task force.
"Can you explain to me exactly what happened back there?" asks Kadzar.
"I'm sorry sir, but you sent us in with a bunch of newbies."
"I'm aware of the staffing problem. What I want to know is, where, exactly, you ran into difficultly."
"Here's how it was, sir. We were standing by the entrance, going over the battle plan. Then, all of a sudden, one of the newbies just charges in, yelling his own name. Naturally, everyone else just followed suit and, before you know it, the whole group gets wiped out. I swear, before that kid died, I heard him say something about chicken."
"Alright. Here's how it's going to go. Even if that kid did have insurance, I want you to make sure he doesn't get resurrected, and if he already has been resurrected, I want you to reverse the process, if you get my meaning. We've got to send the message that loose cannons won't be tolerated."
"Very good, sir. It shall be done. By the way, sir, do you know what happened to our missing guild members?"
"Yeah, I got word from them. They said they were interrupted by something called 'Arr-El'. They didn't explain exactly what this 'Arr-El' thing is, but I'm guessing it's either a monster or some sort of sickness. Either way, they must have either managed to evade it or overcome it, because they promised they'll make it to the next raid, which should be very soon."

Kinsen's Cartographer Logg: Day 79 cont.
I was weak. Before Asgard even finished his sentence I had started to run away as fast as I could. As I got back to where Asgard had taken care of the ice kobolts I tried my best to catch my breath.

"StabbyMcStabStab, how do you feel? Can you run further?"

Silence.
In my cowardly retreat I had not noticed that I had left him behind too. Hopefully he would survive, as he always had against impossible odds with his strange mumblings and ramblings and random shouts.

I can only keep going. I need to return to M'Lord to tell M'Lord that I have failed M'Lord. I have not been able to map out the northen lands were the Man Eating Polar Trolls live.
---

Kinsen's Cartographer Logg: Day 85
I have finally left the cursed cold but I lost the remaining rations to a wild bear. I do not know for how long I can survive without Asgard and StabbyMcStabStab. They somehow worked well together with one hunting and one trapping. Shame that I did not learn from them when I could.
---

Kinsen's Cartographer Logg: Day 87
I think I am being followed, but I am not certain. I feel like I am being watched as I walk through the forest but I am certain that there was nothing when we went past here a week ago.
---

Kinsen's Cartographer Logg: Day 87 cont.
Now I am certain. I am being hunted by ogres as I write this. I hope I can pass this ordeal
---

Kins
I am tired... I do not know for how long I have been unconscious but the blood around my side tells me a long time. I were shot by an arrow but for some reason the ogres did not take me. They simply left me to die

I am losing strenth strength and my eyes are getting blurrier by the seco

I can not be keep consious any more but I hope M'Lord will forgiv my failur ad tht M'Lrd fnds this logg whc contans my maps too.

Is that a stump? It looks so comfortable. Maybe I will lie my head there and rest a while.

Kinsen has been struck down.
Kinsen's Cartographer Logg and several maps lies beside him and the stump.

@Kinsen: :(
Edit: Added spellcasters and mercs for fun, from the D&D SRD

According to that list, here's the daily wages for soldiers, not incuding noble costs. Let's multiply that by 30, assuming each turn roughly takes a month and round them off when applicable.

Knights                       2 gold x30= 60 Gold
Mounted Archers           6 dinar x30= 7 Gold
Armoured Infantry         6 dinar x30= 7 Gold
Hobilars(Light cavlary)   6 dinar x30= 7 Gold
Naval Crew                  6 dinar x15= 4 Gold
Foot Archers               3 dinar x30= 3 Gold
Spearmen                   2 dinar x30= 2 Gold

Unique
Wizards       (heavy archers?)                                    3 Goldx30= 90 Gold
Mercenaries (medium infantry)                                    3 dinar x30= 3 Gold
Zombies/Skeletons (Necromancer upkeep)                     1 dinar x30= 1 Gold
Skirmishers/Militia (slings, shortbows, javs)                    .5 dinar x30= .5 Gold

Here's some values from the wiki, edited with fantasy junk for our game

1 Platinum Aureus  = 2 gold quinar = 25 silver dinar

Now, we'll take

500 foot units (300 Spearmen and 200 Armored infantry)
Spearmen, 600 Gold
Armored Soldiers, 1400 Gold (Longswords, kite shields and Chainmail)

=

2000 Gold a Month

100 foot archers

=

300 Gold a month

So, technically, our upkeep is half of what it would have been. I'm guessing we should we then halve all the numbers in income and total gold, and let it stand at that.
