I haven't explored caverns as an adventurer yet, but you can find FBs in lairs for sure, usually during a quest to kill said creature.

i've never got a FB quest, myself, but i've done a few titans, which are more or less the same thing.

I've explored three large caverns and have never gotten a quest to kill one, I don't think you can.

I think titans ARE pretty much forgotten beasts, just less... Forgotten.
Or maybe not.

You generally receive Megabeast and Semi-Megabeast quests from important people, IE, Kings, Generals, Barons, etc.

I usually find them above ground when I perform that character switching glitch involving the sea and some glaciers. I think I, as a human at that time, along with a bunch of townies, have slain a glass forgotten beast in a town.

As for the normal way of finding them, I haven't seen a forgotten beast down below in the caverns yet.

How did you bring him out of retirement without retiring the fort?
Using DFMode to switch to Adventure, Menu or what?

I guess either the fort was already retired or he left to grab his adventurer seeing how he failed to stop scattering items. then retired and played normally.

Right. I must've glazed over the comment about scattering

Yes, but not FORGOTTEN beasts. You will never be sent to kill a forgotten beast by anyone.

Titans are basically above-ground forgotten beasts, yes. They are not, however, actual forgotten beasts nor are the two interchangeable.

No, forgotten beasts don't change their title to titan when above ground since their race name is really "forgotten beast". With that being said, the above ground forgotten beasts are a product of a glitch, I'm 100% sure.

Oh yes you cannnnnnnnnn. Retire a fortress correctly(DFhack and DFusion technique) guess what appears on the surface?
For some evil reason, the creatures you safely walled in the caverns will appear on the surface, and start traveling.
Used the retire technique on a really prosperous fort. Was I surprised when I spotted a FB on the surface. Like any good peasant level adventurer, I ran. Spotted another, kept running.
After getting good steel armor from the fort, and a quest(From a soldier) found several bodies. The FB had slain them(Looking in Legends). Of course my military added to their reps by killing several. So you can encounter them in this situation. Besides its fun
Go grab a armor rack,  weapon stand, and a chest. Store your prized items in them, and start building an adventurers guild house, of course after dropping the filled furniture , and transporting a bed to the room. The retire fort technique is not really cheating, since Toady removed the mountain homes, all dwarves need to go visit their kin.
I can imagine when a fort unearths the HFS, its a reason several demons appear in legends, besides the FB's appearing.

Should you fail to comply, strict !!disciplinary actions!! will be taken. Also, we feel we should remind you that one of the "criminals" on your list is the chief medical dwarf. If he ends up too badly injured to do his job, you will be fired. Out of a magma cannon.
