Real survival games?
« on: July 05, 2011, 02:37:16 pm »

We all know of REAL survival games, Dwarf Fortres is in its core a survival game, Schiffbruch is what started it all, Stranded 2 is the Nethack of survival games, everything in that gengre is based upon this game wich is based upon Schiffbruch. We know of minecraft, but that is more creative than survival, pussies and their antigrief.. There are a few out there like Hazordhu and other survival BYOND's and there are more. But most of theese games are nothing but getting logs and building houses of them, that is shit. Survival Horror isntreally survival as its all about shooting braindead people wich is retarded and overdone. What would be a real survival game, would be were you actually survive in actual conditions, not some crappy island or LOL CITEH WIT ZOMBEH GOASTZ. Like being a soldier trapped behind enemy lines, many games are like that but lack the survival aspect, its mostly about sneaking around, or being caught in a nuclear attack, FO:NV ftw ftw ftw! Sea survival, invasion survival, we need more non stranded and ZOMBEH GHOAST games.

Sometimes, unintentionally, games become survival games, many times i have miscalculated an orbit in Orbiter, and then racing towards time to save my crew's life, or when i fail at that landing and cause some kind of malfunction in my vessel making me have to make oxygen, water and food supplies, then set up a base and fly another ship there to rescue them. In Ace of Spades, your little outpost could be searched by the enemy, and you would have to hide. Minecraft isnt really survival, but this kind of thing also happens there, stuck in a desert with no wood and most of your pals being below 3 hearts of HP.

REAL survival games:
Dwarf Fortress
Fallout: New Vegas downgraded to "Survival" game per request.

"Survival" games:
Stranded series
Schiffbruch
Gmstranded
Minecraft *shudders
Shores of Hazeron
Various BYOND games
Fallout: New Vegas, they got a point here, its just as shit as all the others.

Unintentional survival games:
Orbiter
Ace of Spades

Oh man, I watched some videos of Amnesia and that shit can easily be described as survival horror.

Ace of Spades? Not really survival at all. Usually, if someone is searching your base you should shoot them before they tear it down.

I wouldn't call fallout NV a real survival game all things considered. Its way too easy to stay alive.

Check out the Cataclysm thread.

Rogue Survivor is the first thing I think about when reading the topic. It's THE best survivor game in my eyes. It makes you think about what you'd do to in a zombie outbreak lol.
Supermarkets are a goldmine for food and if you found one that hasn't been plundered, you're one lucky man. Melee weapons are too risky as it forces you to get up close and
personal, while ammo for your guns is too rare to be able to use often.
Are you going to work together with other survivors? That means you have to share food, which means you have to keep on moving. Barricade yourself in a building with a lot of food?
They WILL find you and by that time they've most likely swarmed around your building, barring your escape. :P
Yea..it's a fun game :)

Another game I can recommend is Notrium, although it's nothing compared to Rogue Survivor ^^

Unreal World is certainly a survival game. Surviving is the name of the game.

Notrium was interesting, though I never got too far into it.
I imagine Unreal World is already assumed, so I'll try to think of others.
Like Beorn mentioned, check out cataclysm. I downloaded it last night though I haven't played it yet. Looks promising.

If you're willing to look up mods, I'm sure there have been survival mods for some of the later arpg's and such.

New Vegas a "Real" Survival game?
What a load of crap.

It's incredibly easy to stay alive even at the highest difficulty. Having to stop every hour to eat and drink is just an annoying chore. You NEVER have to have actively look for food and water to stay alive. And instant travel makes being in the desert a joke.

Any game where you can find food and water just lying on the ground without having to spend time to forage, kill or dig for it shouldn't count as "Real" survival.

In DF you have to at LEAST forage in bushes for edible plants or hunt game. And although you CAN drink water that's almost everywhere, it still isn't an acceptable replacement for booze.

In New Vegas?
Oh look, a convenient trough full of potable water. Working sinks everywhere.
Oh look, someone just left some Instamash on the floor. Food from vendors is dirt cheap.

If only they had the balls to add vitamin deficiency or heat stroke.

I have had many survival situations behind enemy lines, where the only thing that would keep you alive would be trying to keep still, and only dig when you hear them doing something. Also when you reach that last little shot, your close to dirting your pants..

I do not see how DF is a 'real' survival game while apparently minecraft is not.
And I just can't hold back from joining the masses in declaring that Fallout NV is in no way a survival game, 'real' or not.

Heh, this is the "Every game is an RPG because you play a role" argument applied to the Survival genre.

Unreal World is DEFINITELY the most Survival central game, it's really the bulk of what's currently implemented.

I do not see how DF is a 'real' survival game while apparently minecraft is not.

In Minecraft you can entomb yourself in rock and let the game run forever without dieing. That seems to lack some survival aspects.

In DF you can make a small underground farm and a well in your fort, leave one Urist McFarmer inside, seal the entrance and let the game run forever until Urist McFarmer gets mood.

I do agree with Minecraft not being survival game though.

I see no place on the site that says you can do that. So I'm gonna try it anyways. Seems like a good game.
No, no you can't do that. Explain.
