My laptop OS recently died, so I am using the free ubuntu until I can get windows 7 back on it.

Any ideas on anything I can do on this (linux?) OS which I couldn't as much on win7? while i've still got it on.

Ideas such as

Ubuntu/Linux games
Programming?
etc

Play with Compiz. Try different window managers.

I hope someone else can think of something more.

Also, in Ubuntu I have a problem with dosbox, while playing games the alt tab doesnt work, alt+f10 was supposed to work aswell, but doesn't seem to for me

As I love my dosgames, this is a bit of a niggle, anyone had the same/know how to fix?

There isn't much that Ubuntu can do that Windows can not, except for not being windows. On the other hand, except for big name games and a handful of extremely overpriced comercial software, ubuntu can do most of what windows can do.

Try gimp or SpriteMite. Or gpaint. There are tons of options.

Tried that sprite thing, looks like what i wanted but it says click to install, i click and nothing happens :/

Also I have Gpaint, it doesn't work very well for my tastes

If you're a fan of Real Time Strategy (in particular Total Annihilation) then look up the spring engine and it's associated games (most are free), there is also a Age of Empires (AoK) style game called 0Ad which is in early Alpha but still playable. Free as well.

If you really want to see what Ubuntu (Or Debian based system in general), open up Synaptic Package Manager and browse the stuff.  You'll find a lot of gold in there.  If you want me to suggest something specific, just say what you're looking for and we can help that, too.

I know there's an ascii art program somewhere in the repositories.  Search Aptitude or Synaptic.  I usually do paint-like stuff in GIMP, Inkscape, or Blender.  I used to use cinepaint, but I don't think that's in the Ubuntu repositories.  I don't use Ubuntu, I use a different distro and therefore don't entirely know what's in the repositories.  But you can search them really easily.  Install random programs that look interesting.  You can always purge them later.
