Game idea: Space 4X with twist!
« on: July 05, 2011, 11:51:09 am »

A game for anywhere from a dozen, to hundreds of players.

A space-based strategy game with bunches of star systems. Each player starts as the leader of a planet. As the game progresses, players gradually capture new planets and build fleets under their control, contributing to a score.

When a player is defeated or swears fealty to another player, they become a member of the winning player's empire. They still have control of their sector of space, but now so does the winner, who can make orders for the lower-level players.

Ultimately, there will be only a few massive empires (complete with interior politics) battling  over huge areas of space.

The winner is the one who has the most points at the end- and that is not necessarily the  the leader of any empire...

What is the incentive to keep playing after your sector has been taken over?

There are games like this but I believe PTTG? idea was more focused on the internal politics.

What is the incentive to keep playing after your sector has been taken over?
I believe the incentive would be joining that empire. Sure you got capped, but if you can still join 5 other guys who got capped and stamp on some guys Mount and Blade style then it could stil be fun.
You could also try and spark civil wars and the like or under the table deals with other players.
It could even benefit from a Europa Universalis "lucky country" system to make sure theres going to be massive empires.

It's an interesting idea on paper though I'm not sure if it could hold up on its own. The player base for a start would be very niched.

I was able to sneak out a screenshot from the super secret beta.
I was using the mspaint tileset because it makes it looks awesome.

Check it out!

That's interesting, PTTG, I thought you already played Shores of Hazeron.

Curse you! Now everyone knows about the space squid!

Hazeron is too much about getting rid of the radioactive space rats and not enough about strategy and warfare.

Once you have been conquered, you still get points for the success of your new empire, but at a skewed rate.
You get more points for good things that happen to your sector, and fewer for distant or formerly enemy secotrs.

Plus, if your people are much happier than other sectors, you might be able to stir dissent in the greater empire

I really like the sounds of this, I'm envisioning an epic coup to overthrow a mad despot before he weakens the empire too much to defend against the pending alien invasion.

I can confirm that same system exist, and that I once played in a MMORPG (which I forgot the name of, it was in beta) where people do pledge themselves to be part of a bigger empire...while still fighting other people within said empire. The overlord doesn't care too much about his vassals beating each other up, since he still get the benefit of all the vassals swearing loyalty to him...but you don't want to anger one of the stronger vassals who are willing to beat you up to stop you annoying the other vassals (which...uh...happened to me once.  :-[ )

I do remember that the MMORPG is fantasy-based, where you run a religious organization gaining followers...

A game like this would interest me and I've often wondered about how the ideal space 4X MMO might work.

The part of your suggestion about internal politics reminds me of what I've been told about Imperium Nova (Bay12 Topic). You play as the head of a dynasty and there is enforced RP. It's persistent so it doesn't really fit with your idea of winning with points.
