France, 1080 AD.

Times are troubled in the Kingdom of France. The many lords and barons have carved her into a shell of her former self, and now the English to the north, the Romans to the east, and the Spanish to the south all have the capability to waltz right into our land and pretend that they've owned it all along.

We've little infrastructure. We barely know what is happening within our own borders, much less in enemy territory. No watchtowers have been built, military installation crude, farming is rudimentary if it is existent at all and heresy is ever-present. About the only thing we don't have to worry about is disease, and only because we don't rule enough peasants to support a decent cold or flu, much less an empire.

As seen in the map, a force of Englishmen has gathered north of Angers. We aren't sure what they want. Paris is where the king and the princess, Constance, are currently located, and in Rheims, just east, an unremarkable general is governing. South of that is a paltry group of men who claim loyalty to the French kingdom. They should do the trick, for now.

Meanwhile, down to the south, Etienne the righteous fights heresy in Bordeaux, a bastion of sin and villainy. Prince Louis occupies Toulouse, and another unremarkable man baby-sits the fishing village we call Marseille just a little to the east.

Recently the king has had two sons born to him, so for heirs at least we're not doing badly. We've still got to wait for them to mature, though, which takes a good sixteen years.

We're faced with a number of options for construction. If you're familiar with the game, give me some suggestions. If you're not familiar with the game, make suggestions anyways. This goes for troop recruitment, or battle strategy, or anything else.
Also, we've got three unpicked generals! Feel free to claim them.

I'll claim one of the unfamilied generals. Preferably the one at Angers.

I say we expand and conquer as quickly as possbile too.

This is just a preview of what battles will be like. I like my paragraphs unbroken, but if it helps I'll make sure the images are placed in the right place rather than clumped up together for story comprehension purposes.
------------------------------
1080, in an alternate universe.

Milord, as ordered I rallied the militia to round up the rebels and put them to the sword.
A host of one-hundred fifty serf with trident, and a host of one-hundred twenty peasant with bow were arranged upon the field, in addition my men with volgier including myself numbering sixty and one were also there.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

When we were finally assembled we saw banners in the distance, coming over a crest in the land.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The rebel party moved on our position and it became evident that they were holding English banners. They wore fine leather and moved with organized purpose and so I am led to think that they were trained by Englishmen. Of politics I am ignorant, lord, but I think the incident that follows may be of some significance. It became evident that they intended to join in battle. Therefore I formed a line of peasantry in front of the archers to protect them, ordered the archers to stand ground and open fire as soon as the enemy was in range with fire arrows.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The volley flew true and we scored fine casualties. Men screamed in agony and flapped like struck pheasants, flaming like torches, before they dropped to the ground, yet morale did not falter and they set upon the line with a charge, closing the distance in the time it took to loose another volley.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The line held and combat was joined, whilst the archers fired overhead. A great deal of the rebels held back, hesitant, allowing us further time to fire into the ranks. After they sustained casualties they, too, charged into the line. At this, my men began to waver, and the left flank collapsed as the peasants ran like women. Peasantmen engaged the archers, and the archers drew daggers and held, while the other body of archers continued to fire.
I spotted, overviewing the battle, a man in plate-mail giving orders and holding back, and so I ordered the unengaged archers to fire upon him. Then, sensing that unless I made my presence felt my men would break, I waded through the archer group and into the melee.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

From here, my recollection is hazy, but I recall gutting a few of the dogs before they retreated. Then they charged back into my men. Then they retreated again. I remember the commander of the enemy charged in, screaming something unintelligible (presumably in the English language, which I do not speak, write, or understand) shortly before I smashed his gorget into his windpipe. Then the remaining rebels fled into the hills. We have not seen or heard of them for three days now. We are still accounting for casualties.
I await your orders.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I actually like Medieval Total War II quite a bit more then Empire Total war.

While Empire did a good job making Canons actually dangerous in ordinary combat... that is around all it did.

There is just something lost when you use guns.

I still hope for a Ahistorical World Total War.

Are you sieging Dijon and Bordeaux? You have the troops to siege both immediately IIRC.

I have heard the same thing from my firend who has E:TW and M2:TW, he thought it had to do with the lack of diversity available in regards to units, especially infantry.

From what i've heard, didn't E:TW have non-auto ship battles? That would be enough to sell the game for me.

I am liking this Let's Play.

Empire Total War had controllable ship battles, but they were pretty clunky. Better than nothing, I suppose. The main thing I didn't like about it was the fact that all the infantry did the same thing: shoot.

If most of the army is shooting, tactics basically revolve around forming a line and shooting at the enemy and hoping he breaks first.

Awesome lp btw!!! :D

Flanking also plays a major role in breaking enemies.

P.S. Any more "general" slots?

I like this, I haven't played MTW2 but I have played Rome total war.  Are the battle tactics any different?

There is no phalnax. There are pikemen, but if you don't place 2 or three units of them in the same place, they will all die horribly.

Most people think (know?) cavalry are OP in this one. Of course, cavalry were sorta OP in medieval times...

Not if you charge them against pikemen.
