In DF the only thing that would've saved Väinämöinen from the caverns would be his epic skills.

After all, who would you rather keep around? A now-legendary bone carver who has made an instrument, or a now-legendary metalsmith who has made A MACHINE OF INFINITE FRIGGIN' WEALTH!?!

One thing I don't understand: Why does a warship need an bone instrument?

Väinämöinen was a powerful sorcerer, and like most magic in Kalevala lore (and indeed most Finnish folk magic), his spells were troche poems or songs. The music, of course, could serve as an amplifier.

I always mistake the Atlantic for fresh water. Maybe it's because bear blood tastes much saltier? But then again, I never caught a pike in bear blood. I did find a tapeworm and strangled another bear to death with it.

I was thinking: "Hey, the protagonists of this old tale are named exactly as those 2 warships were!"
