Egg-laying creatures
« on: July 04, 2011, 08:23:51 am »

I know hens lay eggs. But I had a egg industry last fortress. Whats my alternatives?

Is there a creature somewhat good at fighting - that also lays eggs?

Elfs.

Although taming one may be tricky.

Elves aren't good at fighting or lay eggs.

Cave crocodiles, they breed like crazy, if you don't want the eggs you'll get plenty of meat leather and war animals.

I second Crocs. And they really lay boatloads of eggs.

Sorry I was obviously not supplying the crucial information here. I need something you can take with you on a EMBARK.

Is it possible to have a drake-egg industry?

As for cave crocodiles, they are available on embark. Do I grab the usual 2 males and 10 females or do I need to have a even amount of them?

edit: cave crocodiles are ridicously expensive. Taking them on embark means literally no skill points and a dimished goods load.

edit2: cave crocodiles use normal pastures like hens or do they need to be in caves.

They are available? Never noticed, but I very seldom embark with anything bigger then a dog and if I do it's sheep. 1 and 1 is enough I'd say, let the first batch of eggs breed and you'll get enough crocs.

Edit: Need 3 years to mature...may want more females if you're unpatient. Dwarves are patient however, not being patient is treasonous! Report to magma chamber 34-B at once!

I tried to get a new player into DF and he brought with him on embark 24 ducks, 12 of each gender, and they were cheap too.   Start with enough females and you probably won't NEED to worry about hatching females!  (At least until 7 years are up, and then your entire food industry collapses in on itself when they all die.)

As for combat effectiveness, ducks are very effective fighters slaughtering invaders* easily with their deadly bills!

Cave crocodiles aren't available at embark unless you've modded the game.  They're PET_EXOTIC, which means that even if you catch some you can't tame them and they won't reproduce without modding.

A "drake" being a male duck, I'm going to go with no on the drake-egg industry.

Unless you mod the drakes. However, eggs from male animals have a habit of not fertilizing.

I went with Birds. The birds you find in caves. Im using the lazy newb back it allows me to enable exotic pets.

So far no new birds though! Only eggs. I've forbidden their eggs, wasn't that what you needed to do to enable them to increase their population?

...birds?  Like, generic bird?  Is there a "Bird" creature?  "This is a bird.  It is normal."

Do you mean Elk Birds, which inhabit the upper cavern and are a crossbreed between an Elk and some type of Eagle?

Elk birds = Grazers IIRC. Starvation of your main food source may be FUN.
