I'm assuming that the fora has already dealt with this extensively in one way or another, but my search skills are failing me.
Essentially, I've tried to mod in a creature with the [NIGHT_CREATURE_HUNTER] before its caste tags, [SPOUSE_CONVERTER] in one caste, and [CONVERTED_SPOUSE] in another. Said creature appears in legacy, it has a lair, it occasionally has killed someone. But I have yet to see it kidnap and convert a person.

My question is, do these tags currently work correctly on user-made beasts? In my searching, I've seen some mention of their not working, but then other people seem to have them working just fine. Can a definitive answer be found on this, or do I need to keep messing with the order of my creature entry in the hopes that eventually I get it to work/realize it won't work in this version?

They should be working. But I've never made a single night creature, shame on me.

Just in case, can you show your creature text? It's hard to help finding a problem when we see no code :).

These tags do work indeed. As Deon said, best post your creature so that we can look at the problems.

Everything looks correct, though I guess the river/lake biome could be problematic. Since they apparently kill people, they should be able to convert as well. As a test, you could give them a wetland biome to see if they can convert creatures that way.

That's actually a good idea. I shall try it, and then edit this post with the results.

Edit:
No dice. At most they kill one person, who has to confront them (instead of the other way around). They're always an enemy of every civ though. Sometimes they don't kill anyone at all.

I set the biome to ANY_LAND, and I'm giving it another go. 250 years, small world, high civ and site.

Edit 2: Electric Boogaloo
Again, nothing. Now it tells me that he began wandering a bunch of different biomes. He still doesn't seek out any fights, and he still doesn't kidnap and convert anybody.

Edit 3: Return of the son of Edit 2 - He knows what you did last summer
I dropped the difficulty of the fuath down from 10 to 1.
He now actively starts fights with everything from regular joes to other night creatures (which I'm ok with).
In the Early Spring of 48, Rulush Bentpolished abducted Sigun Canyonshark from Handlepolished and changed her into a monstrosity. :D

PS. These dudes are so hardcore they're devouring trolls in worldgen.


Anyways, it seems like night creature spouse converters work BUT they need to be [DIFFICULTY:1]
I'm not sure why this is, and it needs more testing to see if you can raise it any higher than that. But that's something I'll get around to another day, maybe.

Interesting. According to Toady, difficulty 10 is megabeast tier, and megabeasts don't reproduce in worldgen if their number is at the old maximum. That may be the factor here. I believe difficulty 7-9 is semimegabeast tier, who also only reproduce if their numbers drop.

I have a difficulty 10 fake night creature with the POWER tag. So far, I thought they didn't reproduce due to the power tag, but apparently it could be difficulty as well. Gotta test that some time.

I wonder if you could get a creature with the [MEGABEAST] tag to breed by lowering its difficulty to 6?

In my searching, I found some mention of making night creatures an entity. People said that they didn't think it would work, because conversion requires a lair.
Someone said they were going to test, and then never followed up on it.

Regardless, this is something that I intend to test for use with my own mod. Both converting civilizations, bogeyman civilizations, layer linked night-creature civs (above ground preferably), and a bunch of other nightcreature tag things.

Speaking of layer-linked civs, has anyone tried them with creatures that can only be found on the surface?

I tried that at some point and it didn't work, but that was several versions ago.
