World Generation Glitch
« on: August 31, 2006, 08:12:00 pm »

I recently downloaded the newest version of Dwarf Fortress (df_21_104_19b), and set out to create a world. My first world was "successfully" generated, and I exported the map...open it up, and what do I see?

Now, I have since created more complete worlds, but never one that doesn't repeat. From what I've seen, it tends to happen in the lower-right, if it's not the entire map (I would guess that portion is generated last). I can upload my latest map, if you'd like...it was generated with the command line generation params. It looks great, except for the right third or so, which starts off OK at the top, but then "repeats" the rest of the way down. Hopefully you've seen this before, and I'm just doing something stupid...if not, I hope I can help resolve it.

Is this something you see when you are traveling around in adventure mode, say, or is this only seen when you export the picture?  It's possible it's just the export feature acting up.

I thought that too. This particular picture is from the export at the end of world generation. I decided to try going into the game anyway, to see if the actual world looked different. New to the game, I wasn't sure how to see the whole map, so I just found the "export local map" or something like that. Even doing that, I was able to see one of the discontinuous parts (where a river/lake border didn't match up; the border where a section started to repeat). So, I'm not sure...

Are you in fullscreen?  Windowed?  Are you using all the default font stuff?  I haven't played around too much with the export feature at other settings.

I was running windowed, and I had changed the window settings. The only thing I changed about the fonts was to change the windowed font to the 800x600 font, instead of the other one. I will try with an 800x600 fullscreen mode, with the 800x600 font.

Maybe switching resolution on map generation creates the repeating pattern? Highly doubtful but it'd be really odd if it was.

I had the windowed resolution set to 1024x768, with the 800x600 font when it created my messed up maps. When I set it back to 800x600 window, with same font, it seems to have worked. Wierd.

Yeah, it's probably just something dumb about the way I set it to read from the buffer.
