Alien Swarm (source)

To avoid necro'ing the old topic for no reason...

I just discovered this a couple days ago. It's great, but pub games can get kinda flaky. Does anyone here still play this? If not, just let the thread sink to the bottom, no biggie.

Everyone tries to do a speedrun and die when they run too far from their team.

Not me. :D
They aren't leaving their teammates to die fast enough then.

Medic doesn't heal? Mining laser. If you're the tech, or that mission doesn't need the tech, burn it.
Me, a friend, and a pub was playing I think the last level. He couldn't figure out how to heal us, or pick up the mining laser, so we killed him. My friend died instantly, and Ispent the nest 10 minutes running with the benny hill theme going.
Fun game.

Fun game, shame Valve left it 4 dead (heehee).

Public games can be a bit hard to find and it's even harder to find a server that runs decent custom maps and near impossible to have the right map version to connect.

The default missons are well done and very varied, though they do get stale after the second run through or so.
The lack of a big bad boss monster (typical for Valve >:( )was a bit of a let down.

Some of the weapons felt like fluff to me and could do with some tweaking. Some weapons combos seem to make the game fairly easy, I managed to play through the game on various diffculties with the officer's shotgun and flamer.

Still if Valve ever decided to come back and work on it again a few features could make the game great.
-Better map support with an online database to download from.
-Few tweaks in weapons.
-More variation in aliens.
-Some new game modes
-Couple of big bad monsters or "elites" that really mess up your day.
-Perhaps some sort of versus mode ala L4D with a team controlling the monsters.
-Could merge some rts espacts into it, like Zombie Master, Irongrip or a "player controlled AI director" (not  a simple feature but it's still cool)

I'm really hoping Valve will come back to polish the game. Since TF2 went Free to Play I'm thinking they just might.
An item shop for some crappy hats or some bling weapons and some free dlcs. Bam, new players on steam which is a pretty good marketing scheme.

These accounts seem accurate. That and everyone just standing around killing the trickle of spawn til ammo runs out. Or shotgunning me in the back. And the face. And the side. And the face again. Anyway, I do know how the healgun works, so hit me up sometime if there's a slot open.

After they super nerfed the Teslacoil FOR NO GOOD REASON (They told us the reason) I just don't really want to play all that much. Which is a shame because it was my favorite weapon before... and is useless now... Well not useless but outclassed by other alternatives.

That and I sort of realised I am "too good" for the players I run into (no really... this is the only game where I honestly felt that being WAY better then everyone else was a bad thing) and I am sick of being punished for it.

The only time I am NOT punished for it is on two levels... One which I've learned to hate (the last one), and the really boring flamethrower level. No wait sorry I am wrong, I once was yelled at because I stopped a back attack because the players there didn't realise that actually happens. Dear goodness GO ON AHEAD! it is easier to kill these guys if I stay behind.

In otherwords, I don't like being yelled at for doing a good job.

The game really needs more balance, as the minigun is completely useless compared to an Officer with a shotgun and flamer. Also, no one really works together. Too many people just try to speedrun and leave everyone else behind to try and fight a horde of kamikazes and parasites. :(

Actually depending on the team this has its own advantages.

However it REALLY depends on what the party make up.

In fact I find that other then a few forced choke points... it is preferable to standing still and attacking aliens (in fact later enemies make that strategy terrible)

Which is why people Speedrun... because not speed running is suicide later on. (For example during the last mission... Unless you have a team of 4 living VERY experienced players... You will have to speed through half the mission)
