We're not going *into* the camp-we're counting tents and horses. Assuming we know how to count...

Naw, just need a vantage point... Unfortunately, I imagine they'd have chosen a fairly flat, plain-type area for their camp, so maybe not so many trees. Have a look around the area, though.

You decide to leave the horses with one of your scouts rather than risk injuring them. You will split up into two scouting groups, you and your brother will travel parallel to the other two scouts on the way towards the Roman camp. You decide to take along the hand axe and old shield while your brother takes the spear.

On your journey through the woods, you encounter a clearing. In this clearing are two men dressed in animal skins. They're sitting around a burnt out campfire, talking. There are two tents in the area which may have more men in them. They don't see you yet, now would be the time to act.

If the tents are Roman, then we've got auxilia or bandits. If the tents aren't roman, we've got bandits.

You wait anticipating more men to emerge from the tents, none do though. Suddenly, the men around the camp stop talking and look in your general direction. One stands up, spear in hand, and slowly creeps toward you. He's close enough for you to see metal, segmented armor and mail underneath what appears to be a wolf skin. Unexpectedly, a bird swoops down in front of the man, he laughs and returns to the campfire. You are still undetected.

Being skilled horsemen, you've had a lot of archery practice. A shot like that would still be difficult though.
