Historically, Scythians/Sarmatians were rather nomadic, so picking up the whole village and moving may be viable. I'm thinking about how this could work for the story. Although, if you all think we should stay, then so be it. I'll add more tomorrow.

Just noticed the tavern is still on !!Fire!!

We should probably dig a firebreak pit around it to keep the flames from spreading, and assign some villagers to tend it and make sure it doesn't get out of control.

Before anything more can be done. The tavern fire must be taken care of. Some brave villagers are already trying to douse the flames. Others are digging a pit around it to keep the fire from spreading. Hopefully the fire will be put out by nightfall, so it wont act as a beacon to all bloodthirsty Romans in the vicinity. Meanwhile, bodies are being carried off toward the burial mounds for interment. The priests have offered sacrifices to the Gods, our luck may turn for the better after all.

As the sun sets, your family returns to your house to rest for the night. You are whittling some arrow shafts when a there is a bang at the front door. Your father opens the door and you see the village chief standing there. Your father and the Chief have long been friends, ever since they fought together on military campaigns long past. The Chief asks to talk to your father outside and the two step out. They return after a while, your father has something to ask you:

"My son, I've talked with the chief and we believe that you should lead a scouting party out towards the Roman camp tomorrow morning. This will not only give us an idea on how many they are, but also if we should prepare for another attack."
What will you do next?

You, your brother, and 3 other men (proficient horse riders and bowmen) will be asked to go on the scout mission. You will travel through the forest to the north of the Roman encampment and will watch from there.
 Do you accept?

I suggest to the others we make some earth-patterned, leaf lined cloaks for sneaking.

You agree to go on the scouting mission. But your father has something else to tell you:

"I wish to give you my fathers bow and quiver, I know it will be in good hands with you."
You receive the Bow and Quiver.

You will meet the others early in the morning and will ride to the forests, you'd better get some sleep now, tomorrow will be a long day. Before you rest for the night, will you swap any gear? Items in the house are: dagger, hand axe, spear, worn shield, fur hat.

You could probably create those camo cloaks when you get out into the woods, Dwarmin. There aren't a whole lot of trees out on the steppes. But I'll keep that idea in mind.

I'd grab the hat, and leave the rest. We'll need to be light and quick to avoid certain death if we're detected.

still we might have to fight, and we are on horseback, so there's really no problem with carrying a few extra pointy sticks.
take the spear; it is a better weapon for horseback fighting, take the shield; your chances of surviving an encounter dramatically increase, and take the handaxe; an all around useful tool, as well as a better weapon in case we get into close quarters fighting

True, and we can always just drop some heavy equipment if things get hairy.

Shit, I just finished writing a truly glorious story segment, and accidentally closed the tab... Fuck... took me like 30 minutes to come up with that and it was pure written  gold.
