Perma-break
« on: June 30, 2011, 06:25:03 pm »

My mechanic recently got made a duchess consort; afterwards, she had a baby. Now, she seems to be on permanent break (6 months without working, although she did attend 2 parties, drink, and eat).

Any idea why and/or how to make her work again? I've drafted her and undrafted her, but that didn't do anything.

I think it's something to do with the fact that your mechanic got made the consort of a noble, and well, from what I hear, seeing how I have never gained more than a mayor, nobles of that level don't do civilian work other than a few minor things.

My duke is still doing stuff now; only the consort isn't. I'm pretty sure appointed nobles are still supposed to do stuff - only migrating nobles don't.

my duchess is a legendary clothier that basically supports the fort by decorating clothy goblinite.  she puts of the liaison for months moving puppies to cages, and before i disabled it, feeding my wounded (despite her preferences for not helping others).

dont know about the consort thing, she's too busy to socialise and hasent married.

Well, like I said, I have never gotten any nobles higher than a mayor. So i really don't know.

maybe she doesnt like working anymore? i notice dwarves are often lazy too full of life to do anything that sounds like work. just make another dwarf a clothier and dont worry about her.

or, maybe her job now is to please the duke, and keeping her not busy will help with that...i know if i was a duke id have several girls doing nothing but looking pretty and ...pleasing me

Sounds like she's just lazy, some dwarves are like that. I've had a few miners that took breaks all the time, takes forever to do anything!

Being on break for 6 months is taking the piss though. Tell us if she ever gets around to doing anything, I'm interested in knowing if this is intended behavior for lazy nobles.

First: check the dwarf's thoughts and preferences for any clues, like "She takes her time making decisions" or anything.
Second: A long walk off a short plank.

This behavior started a while ago; by now she's been on break for 9 months and shows no sign of stopping.

She has given birth again, though. Which is rather odd, considering that my population is currently triple the population cap (population 21, pop cap 7).

She is often nervous. She is quick to anger. She rarely feels discouraged. She can handle stress. She is very active. She is often cheerful. She has a good awareness of her own emotions. She is resistant to change. She finds helping others rewarding. She is not easily moved to pity. She strives for excellence. Her hans begin moving when she becomes exasperated. She needs alcohol to get through the working day.

As for the second suggestion: the reason this is important is because she's the legendary mechanic for the fort, and I'm looking for masterwork mechanisms (just for fun), and the other two mechanics are taking forever to make some.

Population cap don't affects birthing, it only affects migrations (assuming caravan or liason makes it out to tell the mountainhome). There're separate baby cap below the population cap in the init_d, which's more limit on how many babies there are at once and percentage of population that can be babies.

Uncool, perhaps the other two mechanics are beating her to the job. Assign her a mechanic shop, have it build mechanisms

Should you fail to comply, strict !!disciplinary actions!! will be taken. Also, we feel we should remind you that one of the "criminals" on your list is the chief medical dwarf. If he ends up too badly injured to do his job, you will be fired. Out of a magma cannon.
Sincerely,
The Administration

I have 3 mechanics workshops, one for each mechanic (two are part of my standard design, the third was made specifically for having a surprise mechanic), all of which are set to make mechanisms on repeat. Additionally, she says she's on break, not that she has no job.

Injure her. Maybe she'll get un-stuck after treatment. Unless she will be strapped to a traction bench.

I can confirm this behaviour; I had a Baroness consort--a legendary carpenter who even had a dedicated workshop--who simply stopped working after his wife became baroness.  Of course, this did not stop the baroness from making wagonloads of *Rope Reed Fiber Cloth*.  I experimented with this for about a year of game time, then reverted back to an earlier save.

The next time, I made sure the lucky dwarf was single.

I suspect that even though the "Baron/Baroness = Lazy" tag was removed, the tag for the spouse remains in place.
