the limits of partial match uniforms
« on: June 30, 2011, 03:22:15 pm »

I'm curious as to the specific mechanics of setting a military uniform to "partial match". I ask because I want a one-size-fits-all uniform for military, where they will upgrade to better armor automatically as I aquire it. My gear right now is very mottled, and will require a lot of micromanagement until I get my metal industry going.

To what extent is the game flexible? If you specify metal equipment, will the dwarf settle for other non-metal materials? If you specify "high boots", will the dwarf settle for low boots or shoes? If you specify "shield", will the dwarf settle for a buckler? I could go on forever with similar questions.

I'm particularly curious about upgrading to high boots(foreign) from low boots, and to breastplates from lesser body armor (like leather).

Does anyone know or am I going to have to conduct some science?

I'm uncertain myself if Dwarves have a preference for higher-grade materials and qualities, within the range of gear they're allowed to have in their uniform.

So, if you specify just high boots, I'm not sure if many of them will have low-grade leather boots even when high quality metal boots are available, or if they'll actually prefer better stuff.

Time for some science, then.

OK, results...

It would appear that "partial match" extends only to what materials it is made of. However, this only seems to apply to different metals. Selecting "metal" or a specific type of metal as the material will exclude all non-metal materials, and vice versa. The dwarf will always prefer the material specified and will only choose another material if it is not available. If there is a choice between multiple apropriate items, it will choose the one with the highest total value (like any other job). The dwarves in an earlier slots in the military will get to choose first, leaving the lesser gear to those who come after (starts with the first squad commander and goes down the list, then starts with the second squad and so on).

For example, Choosing "Iron High Boots" will allow the dwarf to wear "Copper High Boots" but not "Leather High Boots" or "Iron Low Boots". Selecting something general like "headgear" will pick from anything that fits in that slot.

Feel free to do some more research on it.
