Lots of coal, no ores; What do?
« on: June 30, 2011, 04:49:03 am »

I've been playing this fort for a while now (About a year and a season in), I've reached 50 dwarves.

I have Rock Salt, several types of gems and Lignite. I have yet to see any metal ores. (I didn't breach the first cavern layer yet)

Anyone have any ideas what I should do? (I have three weapon/shield equipped dwarves, but not enough metal to create equipment for the rest of the dwarves... Unless I make them Marksdwarves, of course.)

You could catch goblins in cage traps, strip them of their gear, and melt it down.

Damn, I haven't seen coal on my map since before 31_18, except for the few times I cranked the minerals all the way up.

Such a shame if I have to wait for goblins... Suppose I have to crank out some leather armor and crossbows, then. I suppose I could take down an ambush or two with novice marksdwarves, yes? (If my fort is protected by walls)

Earlier I had a fort with two layers of sand, three soil layers, and then some stone and native gold everywhere. - Gold plated dining hall <3

Import ore, kill goblins. Buy everything metal from caravans and melt it down.

Thanks for the suggestion, but Number4 is correct: [...] it would be easier and more predictable to just be a racist.

Did somebody just rule 34 two veins of metal?

Hmm... I'm trying to import as much ore as possible, as any (in?)sane DF player would, when they lack it.

However, if I have only one layer of shallow metals, would there be any chance of finding metals further down? Perhaps if I breach one or two caverns?

I also melted down a copper cage with a goose inside it earlier, my butcher ran to the smelter to save 'im... Only to butcher 'im afterwards :D

Why import the ore? Just import the bars so you dont need to waste coke/labour.

By ore I meant both ore and bars.

I have trouble enough finding enough work for 50 dwarves as it is (Although I'm down to 1-2 idlers now.)

Also, I embarked in almost pure lignite, I have two hundred pieces of coke I don't ever get to use :D

Hmm... I need coke for glassmaking and potash/pearlash making, don't I?

If you're really hard up for metals, glass serrated disks might be a good defence, but given the base value for mechanisms and serrated disks, they'll attract hostiles that much quicker if you spam them, though you could limit glassmaking and mechanics workshops to only let incompetent dwarves work their in the profile and get everyone to make a couple. Economic stones are more valuable, so you could always turn off lignite's protected status and make crafts/furniture out of it if you're literally up to your ears in it.

Excessive lignite ore + a touch of magma = .. exploding death trap? It might be tricky to setup, and take some time and labor to reset, but I know it works, I've er.. accidentally ignited lignite ore with magma before. It seems like the natural course of action for your embark; far more suicidally dangerous dwarfy than mere glass serrated disks or marksdwarves.

Breach the caverns!!!  If ore veins exist, the caverns will have several well-exposed and visible.  Caverns are one of the best ways to instantly expose a few z-levels worth of stone types, short of dfreveal.

Make a giant stockpile (in a shape of your choosing), light it up.

It seems after digging down two layers from my current lowest layer (-5) I reached a giant deposit of Tetrahedrite! (Silver and copper, if you don't wish to look it up) Woo woo!

Better yet, build a 5x5 floor of lignite in a 1 level pit, let 1/7 of Magma touch a random spot (set the floor as a restricted traffic zone beforehand), mark the (now burning) floor as a garbage dump, build a non-flammable wall and floor around and above the pit (preferably bauxite) and chuck everything you don't want into the incinerator.
