Things you wish you knew earlier
« on: June 30, 2011, 01:52:51 am »

A lot of the fun in this game is about discovery, but as a new player I know I could have been saved a lot of frustration had I learned something earlier, so as the title suggests, post things you wish you had learned earlier! I'll start!

I wish I had known about the lazy newb pack earlier, and more importantly dwarf therapist! I had played this game for way too long while painfully trying to micromanage everyone.

I also wish I had tried using the butcher shop earlier, the first few forts it just seemed too complicated to use so I avoided it, but it's a lot of fun slaughtering puppies!

What. What. WHAT. MOTHER FUCKING. 2 hours.... 2 god damn hours. Just getting them in their little rooms. Designating, assigning, making sure they're all assigned. All 200 dwarves are going to die. Then I shall reboot a back up save and kill them again. And again.

YES! This...I use to to wait till the bitter end before digging out bedrooms because of having to assign near 200 bedrooms..now a days just dig it out, make the stuff, create a bedroom and forget about it :)

Christ, are you dwarves or are you elves? If you think Hell has too many demons, then youkill them till the population reaches an acceptable number.
Dwarf Fortress: So horrifying the players would rather talk about nice things, like Warhammer 40k.

Wait, so I can set objects to build in workshops? and in exact amounts? no fiddling with workshops? its distributed and done automatically? It resumes automatically when materials become available? FFFFFFFFFUUUUUU

Also:
M->S->E-> + or -
Oh so THATS how i get them to train with less then 10 in the squad. Huh. Oh well, everyone pile in the danger room!

"Yeah. My plan was to drop some kittens into the siege, and have my dwarves freefall into battle, landing on top of the kittens. The plan was kinda dumb though because the kittens were standing on grates, and the goblins killed them with arrows just as I was releasing the freefalling dwarves. So the dwarves weren't able to land on kittens and just fell and died."

Macros:

Ctrl+r
<keystroke series>
Ctrl+r

Ctrl+p to playback.

This works anywhere keystrokes work. Designate standard bedrooms by 5 or 10 at a time. One touch flags an entire screen of goods to be traded. Designate 2 levels of pump stack, then designate the other 40 in under a minute.

You can save and reuse them as well, but it's ridiculously good for tedium like trading all on its own. I almost never hear anyone mention macros.

And then, they will be weaponized. Like everything in this game, from kittens to babies, everything is a potential device of murder.
So if baseless speculation is all we have, we might as well treat it like fact.

Retracting Bridges don't seem to retract if there's a creature on them. Thanks for not telling me before i started work on that map-spanning retractable bridge, game! Raising Bridges from now on, if i want to drop enemies down.

Bridges either don't works or breaks if there're certain weight or more of critters on them, I'd wage the raising bridges won't help :D

No, raising bridges always works, it's retracting ones that i seem to have problems with.

Retracting ones do. They drop the creature, rising flings.

I know, but in my experience, retracting can get stuck, whereas raising has always worked. I lost 3 Dwarves and a Dog in my last fort, because my bridges wouldn't drop a Cyclops into my drowning chamber, and so i had to send soldiers out to kill it the old-fashioned way.
