I really recommend that anyone who hasn't been waiting to play this for years to not try it out. It's majorly pre-alpha at the moment, and there is hardly anything to do.

Yep!

So much so that I honestly thought I'd get a response from chatting to a tree. Which oddly enough didn't pay off... which is actually odd to anyone who played it.

Yah, it's not actually a game yet, more a basic engine prototype but it is exciting that it exists at all now.

It is likely it could have been propped up for Donation appeal.

This. It's exciting for those of us who heard about JADE <insert # of years ago> but for anyone else it's rather pointless to even try it at the moment.

Yeah, this is pretty much the DNF of Roguelikes, right on down to being a massive disappointment.

Edit:  Unless he shows some 2006-2007 Toady level development rush, I can't see it gaining much traction.

I'm not sure how one can really be disappointed that a 0.1 alpha isn't great. He says himself not to expect much of this release, and that it won't even start to be worth playing for some time - the skill system isn't even in yet.

Note also that it's not like he's been working on this since 1998; he kind of abandoned it for work and school for years at a time. This is mostly the result of a few weeks or months.

I wasn't aware that being unpleased with an unplayable 'release' wasn't a valid option.

I'll point out that he released screenshots in 2008/9 or so that showed complex towns and dungeons, and blog posts about working on inventory systems and stuff.  So he's been working on it on and off, mostly off, for some years.  When I heard that JADE .1 was being dropped, I expected something at least kinda coherent.  The release he put out isn't even on par with many 7DRLs I've seen.  Is it wrong to expect a bit more of a splash from the dude who made ADOM?

Again, unless he makes a show of good faith and cranks out some content packed releases in the next few months, it's exceedingly likely he'll simply vanish for a year or more, as he has done in the past.  To this end, I refuse to get hyped simply because he deigned to get something out.

Did some of you even play it?  There's plenty of towns and dungeons of varying complexity all over the place and they look exactly like in the screenshots.  The creatures roaming the dungeons have their own inventory, and even though they don't seem to be able to hit me I can happily kill one, take its weapon and use it to stab the next in line.  For a 0.1.0 release, that's pretty good.

It's pretty much exactly what it says on the tin, really.  If you're disappointed with this release, I guess it's too late to refuse getting hyped.

Well, once again, this isn't quite up to ADOM's level yet. The ADOM we have is 1.1.0., this is JADE 0.1.0. It's like comparing Dwarf Fortress today to Toady's first screenshots of it. It'll get much better once ADOM's features are integrated in full.

Oh, I was wrong in my previous post.  Enemies can hit and kill you just fine, I just happened to be really awesome at not getting killed.

just dl'd and had a look around world map before going down a random dungeon. looks alright, got down 3 levels and increased my char level to 3 before getting killed by an ork brute (took like 50hp off in one hit). Theres alot of skills listed. When are you going to use the gardening skill? Seems like a solid base for a game but i will wait for a few more releases before making judgements

hopefully this resurection will be come a trend

i'd like to see Incursion halls of the goblin king, and Chronicles of Doryen back in active development

I haven't been able to get any vomit this release. Not any I can pick up, at any rate.
Swans, too. Swans are complete bastards.

O yes.  Yes indeed.

But it's suffering from the exact same syndrome that ADOM → JADE has.  A total engine rewrite.  This is the kiss of death for a project.

I recall 15 years ago, admiring a coder named Ben Harrison very much for cleaning up Angband's code without a start-over.  In-place iterative cleanup for the win.

Well, I played it expecting exactly what I was told Jade 0.1.0 would bring. I am not disappointed at all.

This is all obvious to everyone and also has nothing to do with my complaints.   Take JADE .1 which has been spoken of in hushed whispers for years, with screenshots and info coming out every year or so, in its current state, VS, oh, say, Battle Champs, something Toady whipped up in a weekend for laughs as a way to put some of his graphical code out.  If Biskup was dead set on proving himself dedicated, why wouldn't he put in an extra week or so to make the birth of the continuation of his life's work something memorable?
