Shopkeepers can be killed with a level 20, sometimes a level 15 fighter with some spells. I usually kill them just fine as long as I don't get a coin lodged in my brain.
Which they are very good at. It's a class power, in fact.
Killing the shopkeeper and robbing the place also causes Cursing and/or Dooming, depending on your alignment I think.

Emphasis added. Yeah, you did get the thing I said about looting trash, right? I was joking when I said that, but that doesn't mean that I wasn't also serious. Java is slightly less efficient than other languages, but I don't think the difference is that vast for most everyday tasks. And this is not a protein folding simulator, it's a roguelike. If your computer can't handle a roguelike written in Java, I would guess that either your computer is way more than five years old, or whoever wrote the roguelike kind of sucks at making decent algorithms.
I know that a simple program is likely to run normally, but the virtual machine is heavy per se, it eats a lot of memory and processing power, and the lack of support for some OSes is a bad thing. Yeah, we have a lot of power today, but this isn't a good reason to waste it :P
I know I exagerated a little in the previous post, but I don't like java very much :)

Well, that was boring. I suppose I can't expect much from a pre-alpha, though.

This. I walked around and looked at the world, and then decided to kill some random elves.
Then I quit.

It seems like it COULD have a lot of potential though!

EDIT: If you wanna see the world generation, you don't have to worry about dying or anything, there is no drowning ect.

And the world is...not that large from top to bottom, and it loops. I hope it seems larger when you can't go through the entire world xD

By my experience, the virtual machine overhead of Java and C# virtual machines (the official ones at least) isn't nearly as significant as people seem to think. Yes, it does take additional power, but not really a "lot". Less advanced VMs may have a bigger overhead. Python, for example, does (understandably, not being funded/developed by a large company) have a (comparatively) sluggish VM.

Hahaha, I can't even seem to get the bloody thing to run, at all. I click th'button, tell it to open via default (Java Webstart Launcher, or along those lines), it downloads the file, proceeds to do a grand total of jack.

Time to see if IE plays better with it does even less than firefox, I guess bleh. I appreciate java for what it apparently lets folks do, but it's always seemed like a steaming pile of poo from the outsider, non-coder perspective. I can recall precisely one java program (stick rangers) that does what a nice, decent, non-java program does without chewing up a freakishly greater amount of resources (for an equivalent program in almost anything else) or having somewhat painful difficulties getting to run.

Just haven't had much luck with it, I guess. I never knew what JADE stood for, but I'm a lot less interested now that I know :-\

Still going to check it out as it goes along (I loved ADOM with the mutation ramp-up over time thing turned off), though. Maybe it'll end up being program number two.

Java Web Start tends to fuck up with me but so does everything that requires an Internet connection. Not sure if Web Start is broken or is just my connection again.

Live 5 kilometers away from downtown, endure the constant bumbling of the only ISP who deals there.

Can this thing run on Android?

Even if Android has Java support, I seriously doubt it as:
a.) It uses Java Webstart, not an applet in the page.
and
b.) The screen does not even fit on my netbook screen, I have to move it around to see everything. A phone/small device would be much worse.

I always try to stay as impartial to hype text as possible especially when a game says something about "Freedom"

I mean... afterall you could become the head of a mage guild in Oblivion... an organization that had political influence over the entire country.

It didn't mean that was significant.

Well time to see what the fuss was about...

I really recommend that anyone who hasn't been waiting to play this for years to not try it out. It's majorly pre-alpha at the moment, and there is hardly anything to do.
