writing for keeping on sight.
downloaded adom since it looked interesting.
got stuck inside a merchants shop. even though i had payed everything. :/

just kill the merchant ;)

won't the sheriff outside stop being friends with me ç_ç i could use a wand of doors...by the name it seems to create doors, right?

That is definitely one of the worst things about ADOM... The frigging invincible townspeople! I mean, COME ON. The guys a bumbling sheriff in some tiny little sh*thole hamlet, and he can kill you in a hit or two. >:( I devote most of my time in the game trying to kill some of the stupid named characters... In DF peasants can usually only kill a heavily armoured person through weight of numbers!

this reminds me of a d&d 3.5 adventure and a group of adventurers.
After having defeated a Demi lich in his own plane, they end up next to a farmer and a cart.
They wish to steal the cart from the farmer.
The farmer strangely becomes a 90 level farmer equipped with Vorpal tridents and reduce all of them to negative hit points.
the dungeon master was ushered away. to not say a better term.

“Well,” he said. “We’re in the Forgotten hunting grounds I take it. Your screams just woke them up early. Congratulations, Lyara.”
“Do something!” she whispered, trying to keep her sight on all of them at once.
Basileus clapped his hands once. The Forgotten took a step forward, attracted by the sound.
“There, I did something. I clapped. I like clapping,” he said. -The Investigator And The Case Of The Missing Brain.

I always thought the Sheriff was a tough guy. His name is an anagram of Wyatt Earp, for Pedro's sake! But he's definitely killable (it's even a quest), especially once you're no longer a useless newbie who hasn't done anything serious before arriving to Drakolor Chain.

In ADOM? Press 'w' then '5', I think. 'w' just means continuous, and '5' is to wait. :)

I'm pretty sure it'd be the merchant who kills you, or one of his 30-40 summoned thugs. Try :s(colon, then s) to switch places with him. Or try {colon+p} to make sure you actually paid for it all.

The sherrif is rather easy to kill if you have a method of blinding him or attacking him from afar. I would suggest luring him out of the town, first.

How can I inspect my inventory? I press I and my inventory shows, but when I press any letter, nothing happens...

Thanks!

Yes, as in most RPGs, the shopkeeper is the toughest NPC in the whole game world. The shopkeeper should just go out and kill the ultimate evil, then the adventurer wouldnt have to go through leveling up and doing it. Shopkeepers are some badass mofos. My statement was kinda a joke on that.

They're quite tough, but not nearly the toughest, as far as I know. They were quite killable in Nethack as well.

Shopkeepers can be killed with a level 20, sometimes a level 15 fighter with some spells. I usually kill them just fine as long as I don't get a coin lodged in my brain.

Possibly the best news (well, second best) I've heard all day if he makes good on all these claims.

I've been wanting this in the form of DF adv. mode for a very, very long time, and if JADE can deliver the same faster then I've a new name for my long-awaited rose.

Both McTraveller and quinnr hit the point.
1) Why should I get a high end computer to run (badly) a program that would run flawlessly in a five years old computer if written in any other (compiled) language?
Also, platform independence can be achieved without any problem with most (all?) languages (Dwarf fortress is the proof)
2) The oracle problem. On linux java has a crappy support, open jdk is still unstable and not all programs run well. So "runs on all platforms" is not a very right statement
Emphasis added. Yeah, you did get the thing I said about looting trash, right? I was joking when I said that, but that doesn't mean that I wasn't also serious. Java is slightly less efficient than other languages, but I don't think the difference is that vast for most everyday tasks. And this is not a protein folding simulator, it's a roguelike. If your computer can't handle a roguelike written in Java, I would guess that either your computer is way more than five years old, or whoever wrote the roguelike kind of sucks at making decent algorithms.

No comment on point two. Yeah, I've no idea if Java's boasts of platform independence are actually true, and Linux getting the short end of the stick certainly sounds likely.

The linux version of ToME is far less efficient than the windows one, at least in my experience. The former is far slower. Don't know if ToME uses java and/or is an adequate example

I don't think ToME is Java at all
