It is depending on your OS. Some OS handle the virtual machine rather poorly, and barely have any real support for it. Linux, like Drevlin said, handles java rather poorly.

You guys need to develop some larger software :P I know I haven't done anything much bigger than a couple thousand lines of code, but even there the difference in productivity is amazing.

Yes, if I have to run an enterprise infrastructure (JEE can be very handy), but for game development or else... I think productivity is a matter of experience

Can't argue there. OpenJDK is disappointing.

Also, Dakk was right in another way. DF is unique in it uses more processing power than a regular game, but most Roguelikes, pathfinding or not, don't take much power. Especially compared to a regular 3D game.

The countdown on the site is now at 1 so sometime in the next 24 hours or so the alpha should be available.

Considering Minecraft (a Java game, natch) runs fine at medium-ish settings on my piece of trash, older NETBOOK, I'm guessing a Java roguelike isn't going to slow down some poor bloke's low-end computer given it was made in the last ~8 years.
Sure, but roguelikes usually need a lot more processing power to handle all the pathfinding and other stuff to waste the CPU cycles on.
Especially this one, since it was a big world and whatnot.

To contrast, Minecraft doesn't really have anything remotely as complex.

Note, most Roguelikes (unlike Minecraft and Dwarf Fortress) aren't real time, but turn-based. Turn-based games can, if optimized to the peak, perform many calculations while the user is pondering their next move, and are likely to use less processing power anyway because the user is unlikely to be bashing through events at an intolerable rate and slow downs are less noticeable in turn-based games.

To be honest, I've seen a turn-based Roguelike that really crippled my machine (a crappy PC, I admit). GearHead. It's got a rather complex time simulation system which runs quite well on modern machines but in my 1990's era Analytic Engine it simply got stuck for a moment whenever I tried to load. Oh yeah, and I checked out Crawl code a week ago, compiled it and it may get a bit sticky when there's a lot of translucent walls.

due to the number of replies I half expected this to be some old thread based on rumors that didn't materialize. I was pleasantly surprised
