I remember being stoked for this one too, over ten years ago when I would play ADOM like crazy. I especially despaired the inability to play as a ratling, and this simple feature mentioned in the very first project outline made me look towards the future with hopeful anticipation. But then nothing appeared to move development-wise, and I became disillusioned... not caring... apathetic... what's the word I'm looking for?

Never tried ADOM but I'm interested. I take the whole game is in ASCII?

Because it's Java, I guess it's more likely to be in Unicode. Which basically means we might see even Hebrew or Chinese characters in there.

I really liked ADOM. It's been what, six, seven years since I actively played? It was my second Roguelike, made me go "woot, why's NetHack not like this?" Now, I realize why. If you ask me, ADOM is a more traditional fantasy adventure - it has a big world, lots of quests (compared to NetHack) and a story that is not just MacGuffin. NetHack, on the other hand, is the perfect dungeon - it has every quirky detail you'd hope for, and every detail is well-crafted to fit. Both games are good and coexist in the RogueSphere peacefully.
Its probably more of a RogueCube, though, because of the Unicode/ASCII.

It's known as the Oppai-Kaiju effect. The islands of Japan generate a sort anti-gravity field, which allows breasts to behave as if in microgravity. It's also what allows Godzilla and friends to become 50 stories tall, and lets ninjas run up the side of a skyscraper.

Oh man, I remember a few years ago on these forums there was a little bit of scuffling going on between a couple people about how JADE was going to be much better than Dwarf Fortress's adventure mode. It's been ages since there's been any information on JADE, and it's kind of neat hearing that it's really still going on. ADOM was pretty entertaining.

The only objection I have with the game is that it sounds... a little familar.

It sounds an awful lot like DF adventure mode. Most likely a coincidence, although if it starts getting a bit too far into DF territory, I think I will be very much againist it. There is only so much that I'd accept in similarities before it starts getting suspicious.

The project outline as described in the OP has remained practically identical since the first time it was mentioned by Thomas in 1998-ish, so if anything one could say that DF adventure mode is suspiciously like JADE.
That is, if one were to engage in an idiotic battle of misguided fanboyish loyalities.

I'd say it's convergent, not divergent, in that they both came to the same point through evolution, rather than evolving from the same thing.

YES. I played ADOM first a couple of years ago and liked it a lot. I haven't been following Jade but 0.1.0 sounds really fun!

If anything, this seems more "gamey" than DF Adventure Mode. In this dungeons are out there to be explored and found, in DF they're part of a whole world gen cause/effect relationship. Two games coming to the same point but in totally different ways. Like I said, this seems gamier and DF AM seems more like a history simulator you can then play.

You should be careful what you imply - if you haven't read the books you might not realize that you are implying something awesome and terrifying.

What? This thing is still in development? I dimly remember playing ADOM years ago. I kept dying pretty quickly, but looking back, I think it could have been a pretty good game if I had been better at it. :P

The feature list looks very quite interesting, but frighteningly ambitious. It's kind of ambiguous here just what the schedule is. The first withered husk of a tech demo is to be released "in the very near future (very near)", and using a phrase like that is just asking for unforeseen technical problems and unpredictable delays. And after that, work needs to start on the actual features. Are we going to see a playable game in a matter of months, years or decades? Only time will tell.

Anyway, the thread's hit page four, and there's only been two people complaining about how this game is ripping off Dwarf Fortress. Progress! :D
