It's because of his attitude, mostly. Many of us awaited JADE quite eagerly back then. Compare it to the situation when a partner dumps you, then reappeaers several years later like nothing happened, clearly expecting to be reintegrated into your life without any problems. Oh, and her tastes has grown a lot more expensive, so you're expected to buy a much better birthday gift than you used to back then.

If Biskup spent some time to release something worthwile before asking for money, it would probably get much better reception.

Monthly fee for updates. I'm awe-struck at this guy. Not even AAA titles do that, and this is a rogue-like.

I'm not sure if I understood it correctly, but are you really suggesting that writing something on a Kickstarter page, collecting money and then deciding what actually be delivered is OK? And this is what actually will happen in this project?

From what I gather, it wasn't actually ON Kickstarter. Some other crowdfunding site. They might have different kind of rules about what kind of behaviour is desired. And he got the money, so I'd say it has been shown to be OK, de facto, regardless of what he supposedly ought to have done. >:]

There are many people who like ADOM quite a lot, it seems, and some of them are willing to pony up money for "game made by Thomas Biskup", regardless of content.

No..not at all...good lord how in the world is it parsed to that?  This is what I mean somewhat.  I don't mean to sound like I'm snapping at anybody, just incredibly confused here.

What I'm saying was that Biskup laid out his funding campaign, in detail, to supporters with a certain plan in mind....and that plan was successful and everybody will get tended to as is good and proper according to the baseline.

Then, WHILE everything was going on proper, even more ideas came to pass to make things even better still and reward folks with.  This stuff, in turn, ALSO got funded along the lines by the community---so now all of that stuff will also happen for folks.  This funding campaign greatly exceeded modest expectations.  Even though none of it was explicitly stated at the start of the funding campaign, because a funding campaign is a fluid thing and nobody had thought of these nifty ideas like the Mini-quests and that weird auction event thing.   Biskup has cheated nobody, and does not intend to do so by all indications going forward as this is really a straightforward thing.

As such, it will take more updates, more releases both private for backers and for the public at large, further organizing, and more time to get all this extra awesome content wrangled----but it is all still getting wrangled...as per the latest blog entries assuring such.

-If you want to really get technical about it, Biskup went above call for the funding campaign integrity by choosing to do the same funding rules as Kickstarter---as unlike Kickstarter, IndieGoGo supports what they call "Flex Funding" whereby even if you don't reach your funding target you still get whatever money was pledged.   If this was some petulant cash grab to wring blood from the fans' stones---he'd have opted to use that with cynical abandon.  He explicitly chose not to...and that speaks volumes considering.

-There was no monthly fee for updates, the closest was a NOTION(the true form of that page was a blog update ages ago, and like most blog updates anywhere was subject to after-the-fact reckoning by the community and otherwise, as opposed to something chiseled from hewn stone, but with the suboptimal way the page is organized and presented...) for a monthly access to nightly builds---a pretty esoteric thing.  Honestly, that's just window dressing for the classic "monthly support" donation model that many projects open source and otherwise have been implementing for a long time---this method just getting you something for it beyond the satisfaction of supporting a project.   Personally, I would never go for some sort of monthly thing and I said as much on the entry for it as the thing continued to be hashed out.   If you look in the ADOM Resurrection funding topic on here, you can see my quote from Biksup himself, albeit from his Facebook, that he's "learned his lesson" with regard to the reception to DLC and ongoing fees and such.

Really, much of this would be even more straightforward is Biskup kept all pages on his site especially updated---but they've been slammed with this funding thing now and this whole endeavor is something of uncharted territory now as well.   : /

I know JADE has been pretty much abandoned, but is there:
a) any beta floating around?
b) any sort of a listing of what was planned?

All there is to go by is the official section on the main site, the subforum for it, and the older news articles and comments on the ADOM site pre-ADOM Resurrection venture.

I doubt development of adom2 will resume anytime soon, out of the ongoing adom resurrection thing the dev will certainly be busy enough counting the money with his future commercial steam adom release.
