I really liked ADOM. It's been what, six, seven years since I actively played? It was my second Roguelike, made me go "woot, why's NetHack not like this?" Now, I realize why. If you ask me, ADOM is a more traditional fantasy adventure - it has a big world, lots of quests (compared to NetHack) and a story that is not just MacGuffin. NetHack, on the other hand, is the perfect dungeon - it has every quirky detail you'd hope for, and every detail is well-crafted to fit. Both games are good and coexist in the RogueSphere peacefully.

I think Toady will finish DF way faster, then someone will make JADE-mod, then Grimoire released, and only then JADE.

FINISH? Why, that means nothing except that something ceases to improve!

Of course, he might retire on DF, release the source and start creating a new game. First it'll be Elf Empire, which will revolve around controlling several fortresses. Then Human Heritage, which'll revolve owning the whole world and possibly other planets and mining them hollow. Then Goblins Goin' Quantum, which'll probably take place in several parallel universes. Imagine someone building a trap corridor out of 50 universes, each of them filled with traps? Yeah.

It's a life project. I believe Toady's level of dedication is somewhere around "Finish the game or die trying, and if that happens, possess ThreeToe and finish it anyway."

Yeah, I was kidding. Dwarf Fortress wouldn't be [anything] if it wasn't a life project. Quite a bit like The Art of Computer Programming.

Hmm.....would be nice to have several fortresses to invade Hell, all at the same time....

I had JADE for vapour ware, but it appears to be ALIVE, at least for the moment. Still dont get your hopes up too much from memory the Dev runs a company full time, so this will be a spare time project.

I remember being stoked for this one too, over ten years ago when I would play ADOM like crazy. I especially despaired the inability to play as a ratling, and this simple feature mentioned in the very first project outline made me look towards the future with hopeful anticipation. But then nothing appeared to move development-wise, and I became disillusioned... not caring... apathetic... what's the word I'm looking for?
