What Capt means is.

For the amount of time spent on it and the amount of hype the programmer generated for it... It should have been more then this.

It is like hearing a World class chef is the one who is baking your birthday cake and checking in on him and seeing he is using cake mix.

Not an exact metaphor but it captures the same feeling. The feeling that things should be better.

Suffice it to say that at this point in the game's development a few more canny blog posts about how it's coming along with the occasional screenshot here and there as he added more features would've been better than what he gave us.

That's actually a pretty apt metaphor. I've been hearing things about JADE since I first began my foray into roguelikes, and it's oddly underwhelming now. I'm sure it'll grow great with time, but I guess I'm going to just wait for it to develop for maybe another year before I start following it. Patience is a nice thing. :3

i played adom for a while...
so, after a dead level 1 necromancer. (first character ever, and no idea wtf to do)
after a dead level 8 fighter (had to swim through rivers, and had my main armor AND weapon rusted and broken, and was pinched between enemies)
after a dead level 1 wizard (How do you cast spells? ARGH BANDITS EVERYWHERE!!!)
AND after a dead level 4 wizard (herp derp let's eat a kobold corpse...tasty with sickness! wrecking fits kill me off!)
i'm finding it extremely funny.
XD
making another wizard. I am soo going to get through at least the first quests.

Well. Since this was the thread linked to as the one to use... why are people excited about this, exactly?

Isn't JADE the game that the developer said he would be /charging/ for, after a certain point?

Isn't the ADOM author already known for being rather draconian about his program? i.e. not letting people play with the source and such? Given, that's his right, but goodness if it isn't overly possessive by roguelike standards. ADOM was no DF, but he acts like it's some kind of masterpiece.

I hate to be a downer, but I just don't like the programmer's attitude. That, and I could swear his ADOM page said JADE will cost money at some point.

I guess I'm spoiled by DF and, you know... 99% of every other roguelike out there.

EDIT: Fixed a typo.

Rabek, I'm pretty spoiled by DF too. If I had DF 1.0, right now, I probably wouldn't play much else. Unfortunately as it stands I have juiced Adventure Mode like an orange eaten over five months, so I'm mostly left with having fun doing stupid things in Dwarf Mode until Release 1 of the caravan arc.

Anyway what exactly ARE weapon synergies?

Can this thing run on Android?

b.) The screen does not even fit on my netbook screen, I have to move it around to see everything. A phone/small device would be much worse.

That...is a good point. I should've thought of that.
Well, can Java run on Android? Because that's your answer.
Also, Asus is making Android Tablets? Interesting.

I don't see how wanting to profit from his software is 'draconian'. Sure, many most other roguelike games are freeware and open source, but I don't see why people would have an issue when this one guy wants to leave open the opportunity to make his game awesome and sell it. (His plan, if I remember correctly, was to make a mobile version of ADOM and sell it). He's not the only one, either, I've seen plenty of roguelikes on the iPod touch and Android that cost monies.

Never heard anything about making JADE pay-only. Honestly plenty of roguelikes are closed source how is this different?

Being fair, there are, actually, quite a few strictly for-profit roguelikes, they just usually tend to be... overlooked, I suppose, when thinking about RLs. This is because most of them are on consoles, blasphemous as that may seem in regard to a roguelike game.

The mystery dungeon genre, natch.

Anyway, should probably try jade again soonish. First version was completely non-functioning for me. The java app wouldn't load on my system for some reason or another..

Update's are too plentiful to keep up with for me on the ADOM website  but this comment is promising:

Quote
We will get back to "release early, release often" with 0.2.0. I don't want to stress folks patience with endless alpha releases. JADE 0.2.0 (the next release) will be the first real "game" version of JADE (with all the well-known races, four professions, more than a hundred new items, dozens of new monsters and a chance to "win" the game).

From that point on I will switch back to faster, small releases. I just felt that too many test release eventually will start to bore people...

JADE 0.2.0 already will be a game and then it's a lot more fun to release new versions as you out there won't just be able to test it but really play it. It's a bit like "JADE 0.1.0 being necessary to finally be out". JADE 0.2.0 (with the longer pause) is necessary to finally be a game :-) Hope you understand!

Quote
Those of you who have befriended me at Facebook or subscribed to my updates will know it, but since there are a lot of people out their who dislike Facebook I also felt it necessary to post an update here.

So: Why is the next release of JADE taking so long?

Because I actually decide to break my own JADE rule "Release early, release often" for once. And that is because I felt the need to not wear your interest out with a constant release stream of "non game version of JADE". Therefor the next release takes a little longer.

The next release is going to be JADE 0.2.0 and JADE 0.2.0 for the first time will be a "complete enough" game. It will still be a far stretch from being ADOM but at the current development speed I would hope to reach the level of ADOM detail within about 12 months. The JADE API right now really is "clicking" and I progress at a rate that surprises myself quite often. Here is a glimpse at the new features that are going to be in JADE 0.2.0 (and the JADE 0.2.x series will fine tune a number of the most basic playability and balance issues - but at that point we are back to "release early, release often" - promise!):
  • You will be able to play as a fighter, thief, commoner or tinker (4 professions). Oh, and there is multi-classing :-)
  • You will be able to play all the races known from ADOM.
  • There's more than a 100 new items (plus variations due to the high random customizability of JADE items).
  • There's a couple of dozen new monsters in the game with all kinds of new abilities that in the future will be reused everywhere (e.g. desolidity, flying, swimming, ... and the player can get all that, too). The whole ability system a lot more powerful, flexible and available to the player than anything ADOM ever had.
  • Additionally there now are monster templates that right now are used mostly for undead but that will get a lot more attention in the future. Ants and bees are back, too.
  • There is a new system for liquids in the game (water, lava, acid, blood) that has many interesting effects on the environment. ADOM never had that.
  • There is a whole construction system integrated into the game that allows you to build things. Right now the number of construction plans is still somewhat limited (walls, doors, floors, bridges) but this will get a lot more attention, too. ADOM never had that.
  • There is an item processing system in the game that allows you to convert items into other items (e.g. logs into wooden plans, iron ore into iron ingots into nails, etc.). Naturally these things can be used for building things. ADOM never had that either.
  • It is possible to imbue items and things with power and even initiate a kind of magical black powder chain reaction of connected mana blasts that can trigger other things at a distance. Again something to be heavily extended for future versions. ADOM never had that either.
  • And a lot of other details.
So what's the gist of JADE 0.2.0?

JADE 0.2.0 will be a playable game (even though still a very simple one compared to ADOM) but it will be a lot more fun to move forward from that point onwards. And there will be two other surprises following (probably with JADE 0.2.1) that I yet don't want to speak about.

When will you get JADE 0.2.0?

My guess right now is "at the end of October" since I keep getting sidetracked by cool (and necessary) new features (see above) - I'm working my ass off to get the next release out as soon as possible - that's also the reason why the blog is more silent than usual. Stay tuned!

Thomas Biskup

P.S.: The JADE codebase has been growing by leaps and bounds. The actual Java codebase (ignoring tons of comments and whitespace) has already now grown by about 25% (something like 15.000 lines) compared to the last release. There really is a lot of great stuff coming... and it will be even greater to extend that stuff in the future.

Exciting :D
