I actually think the reason it's been so peaceful so far is having four nations; no one wants to act hostile lest the other three ally against them. A 3 nation game might have been much more unstable.

Nation A attacks B
C intervenes because they don't want to see A get uber powerful.
D waits until the others are weak and profits from neutrality :P
A, B, and C set aside their differences to defeat D...and eventually turn on each other again.  :P

Until E (aliens) turn up... Then A,B,C and D unite to defeat E... then they go back to fighting each other. XD

Depending on the tech level, A thru D may only be able to give E a bloody nose before annihilation  ;)

I was under the impression that we have no aliens. And the thing is, if we start a conflict somewhere in space, what's to stop our inevitable doom once the Geneva Securities expire? Assuming we lose, of course.

You may find aliens as you explore, but there's no "big bad"; any aliens you find will be single system civilizations, if I understand the mechanics right.

If you don't start a conflict once you're in space, what's to stop your inevitable doom when the accords expire :P. And you could always either move your entire nation off Earth or try to fortify it so much before they expire that you can defend yourself.

Basically, the purpose of the accords was to make sure no one could be crippled before they have a chance to not have all their eggs in one basket.

I'd only want to extend the peace if a big giant alien empire appeared!

I think that another reason why there has been so little combat is that any war fought between two nations biased in the same system on the same planet would be like holding a knife fight in a phone booth as no one side could achieve any strategic depth necessary for fighting a war with out being completely crippled. One system aliens will not stay with in there system but will build jump gates to neighboring systems and slowly exapand until they collapse due to a duranium crunch which the AI cant handle.

January 1st

European Union

With fuel supplies precipitously low, The EU restricts spacetravel to essential missions, while lower priority shipping is contracted to civilian lines who buy their fuel off the market. They also make plans to purchase sorium harvester technology from the US, though the design is not expected to be finalized for a year and a half.

They also finalize designs for a Gravsurvey vessel, as the search for jump points is deemed critical to the nations future. The gunboat shipyard begins retooling to build the Audacious.

Code: [Select]
Audacious class Exploration Ship    800 tons     78 Crew     164.8 BP      TCS 16  TH 25  EM 0
1562 km/s     Armour 1-7     Shields 0-0     Sensors 1/1/1/0     Damage Control Rating 2     PPV 0
Annual Failure Rate: 2%    IFR: 0%    Maint Capacity 258 MSP    Max Repair 100 MSP    Est Time: 13.7 Years

Nuclear Thermal Engine E9 (1)    Power 25    Fuel Use 90%    Signature 25    Armour 0    Exp 5%
Fuel Capacity 50,000 Litres    Range 125.0 billion km   (925 days at full power)

Gravitational Survey Sensors (1)   1 Survey Points Per Hour

This design is classed as a Military Vessel for maintenance purposes

Scientists split their effort, some working on improved mining production, others working on designs for a jump drive.

United States of America

As all other nations now have civilian starship fleets, the US finds a local startup, Patrick Marine, and subsidizes it with 7000 megacredits.

January 16th

The US completes construction on a 17th and 18th Spruance class. No further construction is queued

January 21st

A Chinese espionage team manages to steal blueprints of the US Trekker class Freighter from Patrick Marine, which was considering building one but has avoided doing so so far due to a lack of offworld colonies. Unlike the Chinese freighter, the ship is armed with an automated anti-missile weapon, which may be useful information.

February 11th

The US completes work on an 8th George Washington class Carrier. No more are planned for now.

April 6th

China's Luda type B survey ship finds a jump point deep in the asteroid belt.

April 12th

Europe completes construction of an FF Famous. No further production has been ordered.

April 27th

Europe completes construction of two Magazine gunboats. Two Audacious exploration ships are queued.

China completes research on a Nuclear Pulse drive for missiles; it begins designing an anti-missile and launchers using the new technology.

Code: [Select]
Sunfire Anti-Missile Missile

Missile Size: 1 MSP  (0.05 HS)     Warhead: 1    Armour: 0     Manoeuvre Rating: 11
Speed: 23600 km/s    Endurance: 3 minutes   Range: 4.0m km
Cost Per Missile: 0.6683
Chance to Hit: 1k km/s 259.6%   3k km/s 77%   5k km/s 51.9%   10k km/s 26%
Materials Required:    0.25x Tritanium   0.1683x Gallicite   Fuel x50

May 7th

Having completed its missile designs, China begins work on jump drive technology.

July 22nd

Iseya Carrier Lines opens for business in Japan

August 12th

The US completes a new naval shipyard.

September 12th

China completes its share of jump drive research. Europe and Japans contributions to the joint project are moving slowly due to low funding and lab time, possibly due to their wish to delay a working jump drive until they can locate jump points for themselves.

With no immediate research goals, Chinese scientists resume their work on increasing the range of meson weapons.

September 17th

China completes construction of automated mines. With no production directives, they begin producing a 50/50 mix of factories and automated mines.

September 30th

A European espionage group steals blueprints for the Raptor class survey fighter.

October 20th

Sanderson Company opens for business in Europe.

November 30th

Europe completes construction of 2 Audacious class geosurvey ships, which begin searching the system for jump points.
