Slate 26th, year 7 of this age
I sent the militia rushing to the surface to get in position for when the gate opens again to let the migrants in. The first ambush to attack was a group of five cyclops who began to chase the eight migrants and their three animals around.
As the puffing newcomers entered Armorsouls I greeted each of them and asked them their professions, in order of arrival there was: A duck chick, a unhappy dwarf named Urdim Glovedglazes who is a proficient axedwarf and owns a lama and a frill lizard which were both too slow to escape the cyclops, a thresher, a bowyer, a strand extractor called Doctor Dynamo who is frankly scary and will be completely useless outside the military in my opinion, a miner who can use a spear as well as the bronze pick he carries, a trapper and a potter who knows a little about gem cutting.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
A migrant woodcutter carrying a bismuth bronze axe was caught by a second cyclops ambush and killed. Poor dwarf, she didn't have a chance.

Felsite 3rd
One of the ambushes got inside the walls. Three were caught in cage traps but two got far enough to be killed by the militia. One of the Cyclops injured Kubuk and Conan with a forked pike. The other punctured Geshud Bridgeddeep's lung with a its massive axe and then brained her.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The cyclops with the axe was struck down by Obok Channeledguards who is now called The Helmed Tornado of Eviserating.

Felsite 13th
A cobald caravan has arrived and made it safely inside the walls. Only two traders have come.

Felsite 17th
A elven caravan came. Well I call it a caravan it was only one elf and a yak. It was ambushed by seven goblins as soon as it appeared.
Then twenty five dark stranglers in three squads came charging out of the forest. I will keep the gate open as long as I can for the elf but no elf is worth risking Armorsouls.
-------------------------------

Since Ddynamo never said what he wanted his dwarf to be and I was tired of waiting I had a look at his recent posts and dorfed him as the migrant that seemed to fit his posts best.
Im going to continue making small updates. I have enough spare time to play but my spare time is spread out in small chunks.

Felsite 18th
It turns out there was more than one elf in that caravan... they're all dead now. Very dead, ripped to shreds.
It turns out there were more invaders too, another goblin squad and a cyclops squad and now an entire siege of ferric elves led by one mounted on a camel.

The militia is no match for these....

Felsite 20th
A combined force of goblins and dark stranglers got inside the walls before the gate could be closed.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
While the fight inside the wall was going on the ferric elves and dark stranglers out side the walls were having a war of their own!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Hematite 6th
I have directed Conan to give the cobalds a one hundered percent profit in the hopes this will bring a bigger caravan next year.

The cobald merchants had lots of wood and food which is now ours. This is enough wood for a little smithing I think!
Conan brought an item of special interest to my attention, a Giant Cave Spider worth about 2520 copper coins. I told him to trade for it and it is now in the animal stockpile. I'm not sure what to do with it now it is ours and am reluctant to let it out of its cage. Perhaps some future overseer will know what to do with it.

Hematite 13th
The cobald traders want to leave but the ferric elf seige is still in progress. This calls for some creative digging..... I have sent a note to Steelmines to come see me.

Hematite 25th
Kubuk Bookmurk left her hostpital bed were I have been treating her and crawled away. When she was found she had the aspect of one fey!

Malachite 5th
The final stage of the Merchant Road construction has begun.

Malachite 12th
The Merchant Road project was a success! The Cobald merchants are safely on their way. Several goblin archers managed to get into the tunnel before the Merchant Road gates were closed, I am sending the militia.

so i could get a miner lizard? SWEET.
I don't think the guy who made the Dwarf Caramel mod added in a caste that has the Miner skill.

Its name got changed to Modcluster or something like that for some reason, presumably because it added a few things that were not evil races and civs.

As to the GCS...EXCELLENT CHOICE! A silk farm would be worth consideration. You have captured soldiers, which are the hardest-to-get component, aside from the GCS of course.
I can't wait to see what happens next.

I saw a Frill lizard that had decent Axeman skill! Unfortunatly it was the one that belonged to Urdim Glovedglazes (it was too slow to live).
Would have been epic if it survived, Axedwarf and Axelizard fighting side by side, defending their lama from vile six armed ape things....  ;D

Malachite 13th, year 7 of this age
The past few months of constant fighting and siege have made two things abundantly clear to me: First, the military of Armorsouls needs to be strengthened. That means more recrruits, better weapons and armor, a reworked training program and REPLACING THESE ARMOK DAMMED CAGE TRAPS!!! Second, the hostpital needs to be enlarged, redesigned and staffed.
These goals will be the focus of my time from now on.

Malachite 19th
Kubuk has finished her artifact.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Malachite 27th
I have increased the size of the militia to twenty dwarves, this does leave the workforce significantly reduced. Armorsouls will have to limp along until more migrants arrive and that won't happen until this siege is lifted.
Butcher's work awaits the new recruits, we need to dispose of the captives to free up the cages for cage traps. Hopefully the cages will allow us to lift this siege and aquire the equipment of the ferric elves.

Galena 15th
Oh no, twenty three beak wolves...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
... and lots of ettins around campfires.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
There goes any hope of lifting this siege with cage traps.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

[Entry not dated]
Some good news! The ferric elves have given up and gone home leaving only two besieging armies instead of three! Perhaps there is some hope. The militia are still at their bloody work killing caged invaders but progress is being made on that front.
I have dedicated even more of our wood supplies to forging new equipment and Melkor is very busy. It was her idea to melt down some of the large copper armor and smelt it into bronze with the casserite ore down in the mines. I fear that we have nowhere enough wood to properly equip the fighters.

[Entry not dated]
While digging a well shaft for the redesigned hospital Steelmines found a huge cavern system.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
-----------------------------------------------------------
This cavern spans ~30 zlevels. Were the world gen paramiters supposed to do that?
I lost half of this update to electricity problems but I had the other half saved. I rewrote two entries from memory but I had no idea what dates they were.
It is becoming urgent to lift the constant siege so that the dwarven caravan and migrants can arrive. Any advice would be welcome. I am considering stone fall traps, there aren't enough weapons to make weapons traps and not enough cages for cage traps.

Limestone 21st
There are clouds of spores drifting in from the cavern making some dwarves sneeze. Perhaps Armorsouls can grown its own wood with these cavern spores. I have designated a tree farm to be dug out in the fireclay to the south. It will be directly beneath the river so that the farm will be moist.

Timber 5th
When Armorsouls was as prepared for the battle as it was going to get with all in their positions I went over the plans one last time with Ashton and went down to pull the lever.
When the gate opened a force of mostly Ettins rushed into the entrance corridor with some of the beak wolves close on their heels. The reloaded cage traps took care of many of them. The rest charged out into the fort balley slavering for blood.
There were Ettins with forked pikes and massive crossbows, horrible wolf like monsters led by their larger mad eyed kin and unexpectedly a force of kobolds that snuck in unnoticed until the last second. Ashton's strategy worked wonderfully, she calls it using meat shields, the basic idea behind it is this: place dogs and poison worms between the enemy and your fighters when the invaders charge the animals will attack and distract the invaders while your own fighters wade in and strike down the invaders.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
We lost some dogs and pioson worms in that battle and many more were wounded but not a single one of Ashton's soldiers died. At the end there were only two ettins left who tried to run but as I and Ashton had planed the gate was now closed behind them. The two ettins led the militia on a long chase all through the balley. The one who carried a pike made it into one of the main stairwells and there made his last stand injuring Conan in the leg and ripping a dwarf's toe off with its teeth.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
That one was finaly killed when Ashton brought her hammer down on its head earning her the title of Violet Flower of Fighting.
The other Ettin had been a leader of the others and fought ferocusly taking many wounds, until it finaly collaped from exhaustion and could be put down.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I am in the hostpital tending the wounded as I write this. On the surface Ashton is reassembling her dwarves to fight the next horde of invaders when the gate opens again. I am too busy to look into it but I have heard that Goldendagger is acting strangely.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Timer 8th
This time when the gate came down it smashed some beak wolves and some more ran. Those that remained are now fighting the militia in the entrance corridor.
From what the wounded tell me the fight goes well, beak wolves are not much better than beasts in a fight because they carry no weapons or armor.

Timber 13th
The siege is lifted, it is finally lifted!!! Much blood has been shed but the siege is lifted at last!
A single cyclops ambusher has found its way in to annoy the exhausted soldiers. Some can barely lift their weapons.

Tiber 14th
My hopes are fulfilled! the caravan from the mountain homes has come! Praise the gods! Now if only they can make it to the fort.

Timber 18th
Goldendagger has completed a hatchcover of surpassing workdwarfship.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The Merchants from the caravan have reached the safty of the walls but outside their escort of warriors is beset by multiple ambushes I have the few militia members who can still fight out to help.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Unfortunatly the Outpost Liason tried to talk to Goldendagger while he was still in his strange mood. The Liason was insulted when Goldendagger ignored him and has now left.

-----------------------------

On a more personal note:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Its true that we have been working closely together on all these battle plans but what really brought us two together was our shared hatred of shellfish.   ;D

Timber 27th
I have had a look at the caravan from the mountain homes and to be honest its size is a disappointment. There are only four surviving dwarves and three pack animals layden with goods. There was a fifth dwarf, one of the soldier escorts, but he was killed by ambushers.
The merchants have few goods but there are much needed weapons and armor and wood among them. They also have a pair of truth spiders for trade. We have enough giant spiders to be getting on with, we don't need more, I don't care how truthful they are.
The merchants are in a great rush to finish their business and depart and I cannot blame them. Accordingly I have temporarily removed Conan from the position of broker because he is still too wounded to trade. I have found a dwarf called Asmel Torchportals to take his place.

Moonstone 1st
There are WAY too many stone crafts, mugs and instruments in this place. I don't know why BrickT wanted so many. At the rate things are going we can use the equipment of dead invaders to trade for anything we need.

Moonstone 11th
The dogs and poison worms are becoming restless and violent. A particularly eye opening poison worm attack has made me decide that population control is needed.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
To this end many creatures of both spieces will be butchered.
I made several veterans of Ashton's 'meat shield' tactic available for adoption as pets, hopping to gentle them with individual attention... No one adopted any so I will lead by example. I have adopted three dogs and a maimed but vicious poison worm who is called Tacticanvil. The soldiers who have seen Tacticanvil in battle tell me that he was given that name because Tacticanvil kills like an anvil that falls from the sky, messy.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

moonstone 17th
The merchants want to leave and have refused any further trade. I fear for their safety even if they use the Merchant Road. I will prepare a distraction for the ambushes I am sure lurk outside the walls.

Opal 1st
Distraction for the merchants to escape has begun. The gate is open and while the invaders run through it to fight the militia the caravan can slip out the Merchant Road.

Opal 6th
The battle was fierce and many are injured but the caravan is safely away.
