I kinda think girls are better than guys in this game anyways 'cos there babies  can punch the enemy and any dwarf who's been on the battlefield enough (as they should) won't care if the baby acting as an extra layer of armour becomes skewered

But seriously, why not draft urvad? He'll be our best archer yet, and it's best to have a skilled milita captain to teach his underlings how to fight.
I want to draft Urvad, he'll be picking out the brains of various beasties!
Urvad Grippages, on the other hand, is a high master carpenter, and needs time to carpent. Plus, when my dwarves are given crossbows, they smack enemies with it when I want them to shoot and shoot when I'm trying to get them to smack enemies!
(Okay, I also completely lack a bowyerey industry.)

i just go back, and why the hell am i girl :L i asked for a guy.
Oops, my mistake. *facepalms*

Almost half of everyone wanted to draft kobolds, and most everyone had some votes, so everyone except Zon Goldenices is officially drafted. Urvad Grippages will have to wait a bit to actually do militaryey stuff.

Also, I'd like people to claim some dwarves, especially one of the Urvads.

That was awesome. And hilarious. If Roboboy doesn't disagree, I think I'll make it "canon."
Glad you liked it but what do you mean about canon?

Also in this fortress defense mod what percent of the population should we have in the military, anyone have experience with this mod?

By "canon," I mean "official." Something like that.

Malachite 26, 5
Having drafted most of the migrants, I send the militia (except for Grippages, who still lacks a crossbow, as we have no bowyers--I told Zom that he's a bowyer for now, though) against a couple groundhogs. Seven dwarves against two groundhogs? Meat's still on the menu, boys.

Malachite 27, 5
Actually, that hunter came with a crossbow...hm...
I also told Imboker my newest work order: A few totems and some bone bolts.
Urist grew into a drunken frill lizard today. I'd best keep him away from the alcohol...
---
I am doing fine.

I don';t really have any friends, though, which is sad.

Galena 1, 5
WHY must the military be a rag-tag comedy of errors?
I also chose a spot for the Seal the Gates lever--in the future dining hall, right by the doorway.

Galena 2, 5
First blood! It only took five days...And the first groundhog is down!

Galena 3, 5
Urvad Grippages made a masterful maple training axe, worth more than half again as valuable as the masterful chert armor stand in my office that I made. Apparently, Thamior and his companions knew something about what they were talking about, and not just the "being eaten by a shark as a combat technique" thing.
Ah, but masonry is my life, and I would choose no other. Let's be honest, if I thought I was turning into an elf, I'd fall on my own chisel.
Oh, look, a masterful ash training spear...this Urvad knows his carpentry...

Galena 4, 5
The groundhog was surrounded, but they let it past! >:(

Galena 5, 5
I declared the surface stockpile no longer a valid stockpile.  The cat should be introduced to the new one shortly.

Galena 6, 5
The second groundhog is dead.

Military Records:
"G" killed three badgers. Meng has killed a groundhog. Ashton killed three badgers and a groundhog. One of the poison worms killed a platypus, and no creature has stirred in the river since.

Falena 7, 5
A spot for a new kiln, hoped to accelerate the rate of clay gathering, has been chosen. I also chose a site for Steelmines to dig out a hospital...

...as well as some new bedrooms.

I left another note telling Steelmines to take a break from mining.

Galena 8, 5
I decided to add a staircase to a private office below each bedroom. Also, in a standard "chair-table-space-chair-table-ets" pattern, I am filing up the dining room.

Galena 10, 5
As Grippages finished with the beds (we have more than 20 unused beds), I ordered up several wooden shields.
I need a break...
We don't seem to have a bone carver, so I told Toolclouds to start carving up some bones. Hm, maybe I should have him make the bolts first...

Well, isn't this interesting.

Galena 11, 5
A shout of "We struck more red flash opal, sir!" alerts me to the fact that Steelmines has awoken. Hm, I should choose a spot for a jewler's workshop...that looks good.

Galena 12, 5
Another level, more chert. I wonder if the bedrock of Armorsouls is merely chert and red flash opal?

Galena 14, 5
We have five average badger bone bolts and five well-crafted ones. We still ahve a lot of bones! I order up eight more stacks.

Galena 17, 5
The first bedroom has been set up! I give it to Ashotn, since he has killed the most wild beasts...okay, semi-wild critters.
A random spot to stop at a random place...I feel odd. Perhaps I have been posessed with the spirit of Asmel Waywardmarket? But I feel in control of myself, and am not drawn to my mason's workshop to claim random items...how odd.
-----
We still have dwarves available. Also, it is not too late to sign up for a turn! I'd like it if someone did before we near the end of the list...

Late Galena-Late Sandstone (19th-19th)

Galena 19, 5
Grippages made a masterwork ash shield. Fit for Ashton only.

Galena 22, 5
I had Zan work on the walls. I also left a note to myself to make the rest of the dining room tables and chairs.

Galena 26, 5
The militia will train against this new groundhog that just wandered in. They need the practice, most of them. However...

Which is odder: That Shem is taking a chunk of rock into battle, or that he has the finest training spear? Also, why is that badger meat just laying on the ground?

Galena 28, 5
Ah, he dropped the chert...somewhere...hm...
First blood: Ashton, unsurprisingly. If G doesn't step up, he and Ashton might switch spots...no sooner penned than G kills the groundhog.
Oh, dear, there's a cougar...recall the troops! This might hurt them!

Limestone 1, 5
Autumn is here...I am starting to grow weary...

The bedroom area is coming along well.

There are only rudimentary defenses set up, but hopefully our military will be able to handle early incursions...I can't believe I just put that into writing. Well, I probably jinxed myself when I thought it, so I'm not off too much worse.

Limestone 3, 5
Since I have made several doors, I choose some prime spots to put some.

Limestone 10, 5
Nil Craftwhisper, the female poison worm who was evidently adopted by Zon at some point, gave birth to five small poison worms. They will be trained for the military once they are old enough and we have an animal trainer.
The bedrooms are filled and finished. Now we just need to finish hauling out the stone!

Limestone 14, 5
Oh.
My.
GOD.

WE ARE OUT OF ALCOHOL.
I appoint myself brewer and get to work.

Limestone 15, 5
I grab a single longland grass and a tower-cap barrel, and...oh, look, Doc's yelling that there's no water source...I need to get a rope...

Limestone 17, 5
I brew some exotic longland beer. On a side note, Steelmines proclaims that he is a Legendary Miner. Time for some willow-brewed pyreling...wine? Zon also complains about the lack of fresh water.
Pyrebrew, that's it. And it's finer than sunshine, no disrespect to the memory of Thamior intended of course.

Limestone 19, 5
Now for some chertbrewn pyrebrew.

Limestone 20, 5
That cougar is getting awfully close...
Now, I think I'll take a well-deserved nap in my nice, safe room...oh, the cougar's gone? Okay, lemme slee[smear of ink]

Limestone 21, 5
How did this ink smear get on my nice honey bat wool coat?

Limestone 23, 5
I chose a spot for the West Bank Entry Bridge.
One of the dogs gave birth to a puppy. How cute!

Limestone 26, 5
Badgers! Alert the militia! I want to see badger stew within a week! Or at least dead badgers!

Limestone 28, 5
You know what would really hit the spot? Tower-cap brewed prickle berry wine.
In the midst of badger-related carnage, the other dog gave birth to a puppy.

I wonder what's up with Conan. He is supposed to be in uniform at all times, and has been that way since before Grippages announced his arrival. Now the new recruits are lugging their axes about, but Conan?...Nope. He has a shield, though.

Sandstone 1, 5
Zan got his title as an Axedwarf by jamming a badger's skull through its brain with his training axe. That masterful one...maybe I should have Grippages make more weapons...
Seven out of twelve killed, unless the lists of dead badgers got mixed up somehow.

Sandstone 3, 5
Grippages made a masterful maple cage. He really IS a grand master carpenter...
Two badgers left.
The stray foal grew up.

Sandstone 4, 5
Grippages made a masterful ash cage.
The badgers are dead.

Sandstone 7, 5
Grippages, who informs me that he is now a legendary carpenter, made a masterful alder cage. I believe that he's legendary--he grabs a log, smacks it with a shield he made a few times, and presto! It's a cage! I hope it works with other stuff, too. I also hope Grippages takes time out of his schedule to pick up the bismuth bronze crossbow that Zan brought with him...
I also worry about the pools of poison worm ooze that seem to collect everywhere above ground.
none have marred the surface of out fine underground area, though, so we're fine for now.

Sandstone 10, 5
Grippage's newest masterpiece? An alder chest!

Sandstone 12, 5
Grippage's master: Birchen chest.

Sandstone 19, 5
Migrants arrived again.
First is Fikod Inkedmurders, a proficient macedwarf/other assorted military skills/observer, novice butcher, and accomplished leatherworker.

Second is Lorbam Citykindled, an accomplished cheese maker, novice mason and ambusher, and adept judge of intent.

Third is Iden Findersdye, an adequate negotiator.

After Iden is a cow calf. And that is the end of that. Three new recruits.

-----

In case anyone cares, Thamior is the name of the elf I based the backstory on. You know, the one who got eaten by a dire shark and lived a little while to brag about it.

New update! A little lot short, but surely its conclusion will leave you bashing your monitors and demanding to know how this resolves.
I hope not. Bashing is bad for the screen.

-----
Sandstone 21, 5
East Bank Entrance Bridge site chosen.

Sandstone 23, 5
Let's send the recruits against some groundhogs!

Sandstone 26, 5
One hog down...say...I just calculated that 5 out of every 8 citizens are "activly" in the militia, ie actually attacking the beasts. Then there is Grippages...
Ashton killed the second groundhog. "Standings:" Ashton killed five badgers and two groundhogs, Toolclouds killed a badger and a groundhog, G killed four badgers and a groundhog, Zan killed four badgers, Shem killed three, Meng killed a groundhog and a badger, and no one else has any kills at all.

Sandstone 27, 5
It occurred to me that we had no field-farmers, so I told Iden to do that.

Sandstone 28, 5
A Southern Crossing Bridge has been planned.

Timber 13, 5
Fikod adopted the male cat, whom he named Dumed Bolttested.
The carav=an should be coming soon...

I have a bad feeling about something...I'm not sure what, though...

[Note: Civs do not show up on the civ screen until you see one of their members. I thought. If my guess is correct, the kobold civ showed up because a thief lurks on the map...)

I sent the militia out to kill a wandering turkey hen.
Why are several of them dragging stuff along? Two are evidently intending to brain the hen with chert chunks, and Fikod is using the barrel of dwarven wine I brewed as a makeshift mace.
I told Grippages to stand in the middle of the entrance corridor, hopefully shooting the...whatever it is...before it gets in the fort proper.

And there he goes, taking a couple badger lungs with him...Why must every militia member drag a random object out into the battlefield? Alcohol makes sense if the battle is long enough, but they have waterskins for that!

Timber 14, 5
My god! It's a thief!

Oh, dear, it's worse than I feared...

I tell everyone to attack the cyclops thief...I hope it is enough...

[NOTE: After checking the civ screen, I noticed both cyclops and kobold civs. The thief is still out there...]

Now for the "thrilling" conclusion, in an update I call, "Four thieves and some merchants, all in one week."

-----
...
I tell everyone to attack the cyclops thief...I hope it is enough...
...That was a dissapointment. The thief fled the moment it saw our militia. I tell the melees to hunt the turkey and call off Grippages.
No sooner do I than do I spot another thief!

[NOTE: Goldendagger was right beneath the screenshot in question, building a wall.)
Grippages shot at the thief, who had interrupted my wall-building efforts. Doc also complained about the kobold thief's interruption as he ran from the East Bank Entrance Bridge.
Meanwhile, after Grippage releases another few bolt and as the military approaches the now-unconscious would-be thief...

Evidently, the presence of the limp form of the thief is too terrifying for the doctor to handle. Perhaps he is afraid of blood?...Oh, dear, not a good trait to have in a doctor.

Timber 15, 5
Imboker has proven his worth.

The thief had a large silver dagger and small cave spider silk tunic and loincloth. All of these should sell for a fair price.
Speaking of which, the caravan arrived! I start ordering some stuff--mugs, totems, assorted minimal-use items--to be brought to the depot.

Timber 16, 5
Grippage made a masterful oak cabinet.
Oh, dear...what do you mean another kobold has been spotted? By Fikod? He spotted the cyclops, too...he might be excellent watchout material!

And what is this man doing in my room? I don't care that he's the outpost liason, why is he watching me sleep?

Timber 17, 5
The merchants, ignoring the melee on the other side of the river, begin unloading their goods. Imboker, kill the kobold quick so you can trade...
Or Fikod, who seems to be using the shield Grippages made for him well...

...even if he's mistaking it for a mace.
Meng got in the kill, also using his shield like a mace to jam the thief's skull through its brain. Meanwhile, Ashton had killed the turkey. I call a drumstick.
The kobold was better off, with a giant cave spider silk tunic, although he skimped on his only-copper large dagger.

Timber 19, 5
Imboker is stealing cloth from the traders to put in the hospital. I pray the mountainhomes do not charge me further...

Timber 21, 5
Conan is continuing in the great broker tradition of being too busy eating, drinking, sleeping, and dragging stuff to the depot instead of trading. Right now he is in the third of those stages, and he refuses to claim a room despite several being unclaimed. My worries grow daily. I begin to consider a successor.

Timber 22, 5
And another thing conspires to destroy my sanity.

Oh, my, the lady wears neither clothing nor weapons...quite blush-incucing.
Ugh...Hm...Conan is too busy and lazy, between wood-cutting, stonecrafting, military duty, and refusing to be a broker...plus he doesn't handle stress well and takes risks...

Never mind, with a few strikes of the masterful maple axe, the feral lady is down. Four thieves in just over a week...ugh...
I order up some backpacks. Might as well get some of this out of the way to justify all this time in my office, creating a list of succession.
[NOTE: I think that whoever's turn it is should give the position of Expedition Leader to their dwarf, until that position disapears for some reason, which I think it eventually does.]

Timber 24, 5
Conan has moved to the fourth stage of the Traditional Broker Shuffle...Oh, look, he's finally ready to trade!
Conan starts by trading a plain sheep wool rope for an exceptional chert mug. He then trades two well-crafted mugs, an exceptional one, and a superior-quality one, all chert, for a pair of pig tail fiber ropes. Then, five meals of six basic types of meat and ten each of cave fish and lobster for the giant cave spider silk tunic from the second kobold.
And that is a fine place to stop...however I'm stopping. The stress of this job must be driving me insane. I hope it is not too late...

Also, even though I keep voting kobold, I seriously want you to order weapons or raw materials for weapons so we can stop fighting with training axes.
