I think this is enough for another update.

-----

Granite 2, 5
Saw some badgers on the other side of the river.
Steelmines found the clay. As soon as we find stone, we'll be up to our chins in spare clay. No, wait, there is fire clay right below the clay loam!
Chert right beneath fire clay, which is (in case anyone cares) right beneath clay loam, which is beneath loamy sand, which is beneath loam, which is the top layer.

Granite 4, 5
Kiln designated.

Granite 5, 5
Tanner's designated.
Told Imboker to start gathering some plants, just in case.

Granite 6, 5
G built the tanner's. I built the kiln. Steelmines finished mining out the butchery area, and Ashton built the place.

Granite 10, 5
Stoneworking area finished. Spot for future Bridge to Cross The River dug out.
Designated the first part of the bridge and a nice dormitory dug out. Er, the bridge is not dug out, the dorm is.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Everywhere will get that nice, cozy feeling of a personal bedroom.

Granite 11, 5
DocHeimer started designing that bridge.

Granite 13, 5
Steelmines struck flash opal in the dorm walls! Interesting, no?
I'm building the bridge.
In unrelated news, I decided to mine out those four corners. The dorm doesn't look round anyways.

Granite 15, 5
Steelmines took a break from mining to start smoothing the dorm walls.
Other half of bridge designated.

Granite 16, 5
As Doc starts on the other bridge, I start on some "patch-up" floors.

Granite 17, 5
Patch-up floors complete, I designate a carpentry area and some furniture and wood storage areas.

Granite 19, 5
While the smoothed walls are somewhat nice, I told Steelmines to stick to mining for now.
Since Doc is done designing, I am building the other half of The Bridge Over The River. I also finished the mason's workshop, and Doc is working on the mecanic's workshop.

Granite 20, 5
Ack! A platypus!
...Wait, it isn't attacking me...it's safe to finish the bridge.
I chose a spot for the depot.

Granite 21, 5
Ack! The platypus!
It's in the fort! CALL THE MILITIA! After all, they're not doing anything important, and they need to keep in shape. Especially G.
False alarm, it went back in the river.

Granite 24, 5
Despite the platypus jumping onto the bridge every few seconds, I am finish-ACK! Too close!
Ah, there we go, bridge complete!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Not the prettiest, but I wanted it to become a wall when raised, and mason union rules prohibit a bridge longer than 100 feet, and I chose the wrong spot to put the bridge, so...Oh, well.

Granite 25, 5
I built the depot today.

Granite 26, 5
DocHeimer cancelled his hauling task because the platypus was in the fort.
He was on the surface.

Groundhogs came to replace the badgers. I sighed in relief and told Steelmines to dig over on the other side of the river at some point.

Slate 1, 5
Happy New Month. Steelmines has almost finished the dorm.
I noticed that that platypus was killed on one of his exploration by one of the poison worms. Hm, maybe they'd be good for the military...
Imboker is an adequate herbalist, I noted. Random note. Excellent way to end this...random spot on a page. I don't know, it feels like an end of something.

Don't you know how important it is to intimidate traders? Especially with the broad battle axe you're leaning on?

If we need to attack something, I'll draft you. In fact, if we CAN attack something, without suffering losses, I will draft you.

Until then, it's stone pots and wood chopping for you.

On a related note, how do you get woodcutters to bring their axes into battle?

You don't. You assign them an axe or you tell them to equip a battle axe.

Note that when it's designated for the military it cannot be used for woodcutting. Also, draft me for now and make a barracks and tell me to train there; that way in my spare time I can train.

A. Great, I didn't bring an extra axe.
B. Whenever I get around to making a barracks, sure.

Slate 2, 5
Steelmines is working on the furniture storage/carpentry/wood storage area.

Slate 3, 5
The orders got through. I am working on a few statues, Doc on mechanisms, and Conan is continuing to cut down trees.

Slate 4, 5
I chose a spot for a leatherworking area, which I just noticed was missing.

Slate 5, 5
Steelmines chose to stop mining out the Fs/C/Ws area and instead mine out the last few spots in the future dorms.
Also, I'd like to show off a superior statue i made.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
A ferric elf, former treehuggers turned to charcoal and metal and searching for death, killing a dark strangler, a small four-armed brute., Two of our future foes fighting. I hope that this will help everyone understand the danger we will be in if we all slack off. Imboker doesn't think much of it.

Slate 6, 5
Conan made the first mugs. Speaking of rock, I started a new rock storage program. The stone is thrown into a small hole near the craftsdwarfs, mechanics, and masons shops. Said stone is then used. Simple, no?

Slate 8, 5
Steelmines mined out the leatherworking area.

Slate 10, 5
I made another statue of dark stranglers being killed.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Slate 14, 5
Another restless night on a soil floor. Steelmines needs to dig out the carpentry area and Doc needs to man it...

Slate 26, 5
The outside wall if coming along well. Steelmies is smoothing the future dorm.

Slate 27, 5
The militia and Conan were sent after a groundhog. Conan left his axe in the fort...idiot.

Felsite 7, 5
Ashton has been close behind the groundhog for a while, with Conan and G trailing far behind. Much longer and I'll need to call them off.
What a waste.

Steelmines finished the woodworking/wood storage area.

Felsite 10, 5
I called off the military.

Felsite 13, 5
I began fortifying the east-river entrance.

Felsite 22, 5
More red flash opal!

Felsite 24, 5
Badgers...Time to train the militia...
That idiot Conan left his axe in the dirt again! He has no notion of weapon maintenance or self-maintenance! I might want to set up DocHeimer's place soon...

Felsite 27, 5
Conan has earned a title as a wrestler.
Two out of six badgers left.

Felsite 28, 5
Make that one out of six.

Hematite 1, 5
Make that zero out of six.
Imboker's on break.

If you really need the axe and can't craft a wooden training one (I don't see why not) then you can de-equip the axe from the military screen until you need it.

Yes, training axes can cut wood.

Mid-Hematite-Late Malachite

-----

Hematite 10, 5
After mostly mining out the new, underground food stockpile, Steelmines went back to smoothing walls, this time in my future office.
It seems that both Doc and Imboker are on break, and have been for a fair bit.

Hematite 14, 5
I designated some farming areas and told Steelmines to stop engraving for another while. Or, rather, I left a note by him--he's asleep.
Enough beds have been placed in the dormitory area for me to declare it to be the dorm all officially. Conan was the first to go to sleep in The First Dormitory.

Hematite 18, 5
Steelmines partially mined out one of the farms.

Hematite 22, 5
Here are our two farms, so far.

Hematite 24, 5
Having finished the farms, Steelmines returns to the dining area.

Malachite 10, 5
My, two weeks without anything to note. I wonder if I'm doing something wrong.
New food stockpile room finished being mined out. Oh, and so are my own rooms, which I am furnishing. Notably included is a masterful armor stand. As I made it and am the only one to need it, it is being put in my office.

Malachite 14, 5
I finished another bridge across the river, this one intended for caravans.

Malachite 15, 5
I put Steelmines back on stone detailing duty.

Malachite 19, 5
I wonder if the 16 beds in the dorm so far are enough.

Malachite 24, 5
Migrants have arrived.

First is Urvad Grippages, a high master carpenter, expert marksdwarf, expert archer, expert observer, and proficient in dodging and using armor.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Next is Shem Lastracks, a high master soaper, skilled cheese maker, and competetant cook.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Third is Zon Goldenices, who is an adequate wound dresser.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Meng Hamebrushes, a talented fisher and novice carpenter/metalcrafter/conversationalist/military tactics is fourth. I guess he makes his own fishing pole and hooks, and chats with others about military stuff around the fishing hole.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Next is a young horse cow (or whatever female horses are called, I'm more of a subzoologist myself), Urist Cryptgrasps, and Meng's pet frilled lizard hatchling.
The fifth dwarf is Urvad Toolclouds, a competetant miner, talented thresher, and novice armor user, fighter, kicker, dodger, weaponsmith, and observer, not to mention the second Urvad.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Zan Wrungchanneled is a novice at ambushing, architecting, and conversing, and is also the last migrant.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
We now have thirteen dwarves and eleven animals.
-----
I think I'll draft Shem, Zon, Meng, Urvad Toolclouds, and Zam, leaving just Urvad Grippages as the non-militia dwarf. Thoughts?

I wrote this as a sort of character background its pretty long. :o

A Prequel to Armorsouls
A letter from DocHeimer Dwelledsmiths to Astesh Shelltrades in Ringedrooted
Dated Obsidian 10th, year 4 of this age

Greetings Cousin, I write this even as I prepare to leave Furnaceeven for parts unknown. I know we have not always gotten on well with each other but in this matter I must ask for your help regardless of our differences. Help me for the sake of our shared blood if for no other reason. You are the closest of my relatives and so will get this message soonest.
I ask of you two things: First, to tell the family where I have gone so that their messages can find me. Although I do not know where exactly I am going it will be in the southeast beyond Ikavilitera near The Courteous Blueness, where ever that may be. I have been told that letters can be sent with a yearly caravan.
Second, make known to the family the true reason that I have left. I fear that lies may be told about my crime for reasons that will soon be clear. I have been sentenced to leave the mountain homes with a group of six others and settle in dangerous lands far away. The king calls this sentence 'Migration' and says it is not the same as exile but I cannot see the difference.
The story of my crime is this: My old hospital in Furnaceeven was destroyed last year in a cave in, you may have heard of it. The new hospital was dug out next to the drinking hall and at first this seemed to be a good thing, I enjoy i good chibi beer as much as the next dwarf. However now that the drinking hall was right next door my hospital beds were filled at night with sleeping military dwarves too inebriated to walk back to there own beds. It was so annoying! They were too strong and tough force out, and too drunk to talk out. Whenever I needed a bed for a patient I would have to put them on a table instead because the beds were full.
This went on for months until I had an idea. I couldn't push them out but maybe a machine could! I called It The Dwarf Ejector. It worked like this; a lever outside the occupied hospital room could be pulled to lock the rooms door, activate a screw pump in the wall and open a floodgate. The pump would push the uninvited guest out the floodgate with water. After the water drained away another pull of the lever would open the door and the room could be used.
I had become proficient in carpentry, mechanics and building design when I equipped my new hospital having to make most of surgery tables, and all of the traction benches myself. Using those skills I was able to fit all of my hospital rooms with Dwarf Ejectors. To do the mining necessary in making space for the machinery and connecting the Dwarf Ejector to the main power train and water system I enlisted the help of Steelmines Kisstome (who seems to have two last names). Steelmines had been the one who mined out and engraved my new hospital. Although he is a bit antisocial he quickly agreed to help me after i showed him the graffiti the drunk soldiers had carved on his engravings.
The night after the Dwarf Ejectors were finished I was about to go to bed when I heard shouting echoing through the fortress. I went out into the main hall and saw Steelmines running towards me carrying a bleeding dwarf. As we hurried to the hospital Steelmines told me that this unlucky dwarf had run into a Kobold Thief skulking in the forges who had stabbed him in the chest. Together we rushed to one of the hospital rooms only to find it occupied by a snoring soldier.
I admit that I got a bit carried away at this point. Steelmines claims I shouted,
"IF I CANT PLAY WITH YOUR ORGANS GET OUT OF MY HOSPITAL" but I don't remember that. Whatever it was I shouted it woke up the dwarf in the bed and he looked at me blearily as I ran out of the room and pulled the lever of the Dwarf Ejector. The rooms door slammed shut behind Steelmines as he ran out with the injured dwarf. Then there was a sound like a waterfall from inside the room and a shout that trailed away as that soldier was washed out of the hospital.
After waiting ten seconds I pulled the lever again and the door opened to reveal an unoccupied but very wet room. I soon had the injured dwarf stitched up and bandaged. The Kobold dagger had made only a shallow wound and had luckily not cut any major organs.
It was only when I had finished patching the smith that I realized I didn't know where the Dwarf Ejector had washed the soldier to. I asked Steelmines where he had dug the tunnel behind the flood gate to. He said that it connected with the sewer system. Furnaceeven has a very large sewer system and it's a long way down from the level the hospital is on, I was worried.
The Fortress Guard found that soldier the next day deep in the sewers, it turns out he is General Ustuth Truthworked. The water from my Dwarf Ejector had carried him a long way through the sewers smashing him against walls and bouncing him off pillars. The Guard told me that Ustuth is so beaten and swollen that his nose pokes him in the eye before they locked me in prison to await trial.
Obok Inkstood, the king himself sentenced me and Steelmines, in a closed trial, to 'Migration', for the crime 'Malicious Engineering', or so he calls it. After the trial we were put in a room with four others, these are to be our fellow migrants.
Together we all sat in that room in silence, until the one called Goldendagger Pasthandles stood up and began to speak. He laid out his plan to build a Dwarven Fortress in the far away land we must migrate to. A fortress he will name Armorsouls for if we are to survive, he says, we will need souls armored against fear and tragedy. Even as i write this our supplies are being loaded onto a cart and pack animals brought to their harnesses.
I have heard that Goldendagger has been sentenced to 'Migration' because he is supposed to have eaten an elf! Eaten! I do not think that can be true, he must have committed some other crime that has been hidden. It is for this reason and because General Ustuth will surely wish to deny that he fell asleep drunk in the hospital that I fear my true crime will be lied about once I have left.
I ask you to make sure that I am not slandered after I am no longer here to defend myself. I have entrusted this letter secretly to your brother Olon and hope that it reaches you safely. The blessings of Thos SloppedHarths be on you.
-DocHeimer Dwelledsmiths

Notes: This has stuff in it from earlier in the thread like the dwarf ejector and all the names are taken from legends. I hope roboboy doesn't mind that i used his dwarf in here.

But seriously, why not draft urvad? He'll be our best archer yet, and it's best to have a skilled milita captain to teach his underlings how to fight.
