Turn 41

Location: Various (Aqua Resort)
Time: Noon
Weather: Sunny
Light: Yes

Turn Intro

Just as the Heroes were prepared to fight a fair battle against half the Koopa Troop, an awful Magikoopa named Kamek came and flew them away. It looks like the Heroes will have to return to their regularly scheduled quest for the Aqua Star. But what lies ahead in the blue crystal castle? What is the "Origin"? And how did the Koopa Troop directly harness the power of the Fire Star? Our heroic group ponders these questions as they finally catch a moment to mourn over the loss of Red.

Turn Results

Oomph: long-toss your club into the air! Try to hit one of the fleeing Koopa Troop!

You attempt to toss your club at the fleeing Koopa Troop and Magikoopa. Unfortunately, your Hulk-like rage gives you a minus seven to your aim! You miss wildly! Your jaw drops as your club sails towards the water. How terrible! It will rust! You wave at Bradley, and you are pretty sure you see him roll his eyes as he flies off to retrieve your lost club.

For just a moment, you feel empowered. This is just like the tale of Omph and Bragley. You consider shouting "fly HARDER you lazy spectre", but you don't want to incur a one on his roll, too.

Bragley: Retreev Omph's club.

You hope Oomph didn't see you rolling your eyes. It's just that you're always doing the dirty work! But you suppose that friends have to help each other out sometimes. After all, your friends covered for you when you flipped out uphill both ways backwards during deadly combat!

As you fly so high in the sky, you manage to catch Oomph's trusty club. For a moment, you feel it slipping out of your hands, and comically juggle it around before you get a firm grasp on it! You would make a terrible Koopaball player. You breathe a sigh of relief as you managed to avert some unforeseen consequences of your lovable, dim-witted meatshield's behavior.

Zachary: Bathe your wounds in the water and attempt to find Red's corpse.

This isn't the first time you've been hurt on the job. You walk off the bridge, find a rocky downward slope, and climb down into the cool blue water. To your surprise, it's horribly cold! Not cold enough to be a health concern, but cold enough to not make sense with the current weather. You begrudingly bathe your wounds in the water. It stings, but it helps. HP restored.

Once you're healed, you begin fishing around in the lake with your hands near the area you saw Red fall. You go under the water a few times, since it's up to your neck. Eventually, after some effort, you manage to pull up Red's lifeless body. You bring it up to the others for viewing.

Oomph and Bradley seem pretty distressed upon seeing the body. They try to explain to you that this is the first dead teammate whose body has both remained intact and been found. At first you don't understand, so they give a little exposition on what happened to Taric. Or at least, Bradley does, given that he was the only one who viewed the event in full. Your mind is filled with images of a darkness spreading around an armored Koopa, quickly envloping and disintegrating his body.

You're suddenly reminded of an old bedtime story about the dark ages of the Mushroom Kingdom, when the Toads were slaves and the Humans ruled from a technologically advanced building called the Tower of Heaven. If you're remembering correctly, it was almost completely dissolved in a catastrophic blast of shadowy energy. The Mushroom Kingdom had to be built from the ground up by the Humans and Toads who escaped the tower in time - including Princess Toadstool I.

You can't really remember anything else about the story. But you're pretty sure most of that never happened, because there's no way a legend like that could remain clear and unmodified for over 700 years. Probably best not to dwell on it.

Amadeus: Practice taunting on the bridge.

You attempt to spend a few moments getting used to your new, humanoid form. You realize that certain races in This World can undergo transformation at seemingly random intervals, but you never considered it might happen to you. It looks like you don't have fingers, but at least you have hands. You practice making annoying taunting poses with what body parts you're given. It proves to be a waste of time, however, and you stop when Zachary brings up Red's body.

Turn Outro

The remaining five Heroes gather around Red's body. They each tip their metaphorical hats, and Oomph even takes off his shell. They don't really have time to bury the body or anything, and the rocky platforms connecting by bridges around here wouldn't make good burial sites anyway.

In the distance, Bradley spots a short figure, silhouetted by the sunlight. It seems to be running directly towards them, flailing very tiny arm-like lumps, almost as if it is distressed. Bradley points towards the figure, and just as the rest of the crew look away from Red's body, the squat fellow crosses the last bridge seperating itself from them, and the Heroes recognize it as a Shy Guy!

Apparently out of breath, the red, masked Shy Guy walks the last few steps towards what it perceives as five odd visitors. It puts its right arm (lump) across the bottom of its mask and takes a bow.

"Welcome, welcome visitors to our prestigious Aqua Resort!! At the Aqua Resort, we care for both your pleasure and your coins!" The Shy Guy ends its bow and stands up straight.

The Heroes look at each other warily. A few of them shrug. They were not expecting this.

The Shy Guy realizes that its guests remain unconvinced. He will have to pull out all the stops! "We have desirable sleeping arrangements, a freshwater pool and a five-star complementary breakfast! Literally, the breakfast is served with five stars, for all you star-huffers in the crowd,"

Oomph steps forward as the Shy Guy prepares to backtrack once he realizes how insulting his star addiction comment may have come across. The green-shelled Koopa makes his best attempt to explain to the Shy Guy that they are here for the Power Star, not a leisurely stay. The Shy Guy, upon hearing this, stops talking for a moment. It is difficult to tell what is going through its head under its emotionless face-mask.

Snapping out of its train of thought, the Shy Guy responds somewhat less like a salesman. "W-Well... you'll have to ask Count Bloop about that. If you'd like, I can show you to his quarters. It will require a hefty jaunt through the length of the Resort, though. I will make sure to give you the most excellent of tours in the meantime, if you so desire! And I will find a good place for that unfortunate sap's body."

It appears the Shy Guy is genuinely friendly, if a little thick. Do the Heroes follow it into the castle-like center of the Aqua Resort?

Bradley floated nearby. To trust the Shyguy or not to trust the Shyguy? Well, he would go with the group majority, but for now he had a question to ask, and he floated next to the Shyguy and whispered in his ear:

"Uh, um... you seem c-confident... is it the m-m-mask?"

He needed something to help him get over his chronic nervousness before he had a breakdown! Maybe the Shyguy could tell him how to overcome his shyness.

"Oomph will never forget you Red!" Oomph said, totally forgetting about Red.

...

Oomph grunted. He wondered if any of the Kingdoms Fish had heard about him trash talking Super Bubba? Nah! He was sure Super Bubba wasn't bitter or anything about the whole 'Oomph destroying his undersea castle' thing. It was an honest mistake!

Oomph: Follow Shyguy for now. Ask him if there any giant fish in the resort...

Zachary pushes his glasses up his nose as he looked over the shyguy, deep in thought. Perhaps this story WAS related somehow, but he supposed it could wait until later.

"Well, I guess we should take advantage of such opportunities. It's doutful we will come across them in the future."

Go with the Shyguy, but stay on guard. It might be a trap.

"Well, I guess we should take advantage of such opportunities. It's doutful we will come across them in the future."

Oomph double grunted.

"How does Zach-Zach-Aree-Ach see the future? He can barely not see where going with funny dark glasses on. He cannot see invisible blocks like Oomph does, which I does all the time totally not randomly. Yup Yup!"

The Koopa smiled recaling the 'CONK' sound Zachary had made earlier. Good times!

He turned to the ghost and tried to speak.

"Also, thank Bra..D...ely you being good club retriever for Oomph. I think Whimpy spectre good for something, which is compliment by the way."

Turn 42

Location: The Center (Aqua Resort)
Time: Afternoon
Weather: Sunny... for now.
Light: Indeed

Turn Intro

Finally, someone not looking to gut the Heroes and hang them on a wall somewhere! A lone not-so-shy Shyguy attempted to sell a stay at the Aqua Resort to the Heroes, but broke his script when they told him what they were here for. Now the Heroes must decide whether or not to trust the Shyguy. After all, he might be leading them into a trap.

Turn Results

Bradley: Float nearby and question the shyguy.

You float up and down near the Shyguy salesman, finally getting the guts to whisper a question to him. He looks your way before you ask, and his mask kind of freaks you out, but you refuse to chicken out on this. Your confidence is of the utmost importance to the team's success!

"Uh, um... you seem c-confident... is it the m-m-mask?" You say these words to the Shyguy, and he/it tilts body to the right, putting his hand lumps on his sides.

"Actually, I ran a magic shop for a few years before becoming a salesman and host. Serving customers taught me a lot about acting confident. After you ask Count Bloop about the Star, why don't I teach you a thing or two about being less shy? Being a Boo, it could help you just as much as it helped me!" The Shyguy then pats you on the back, sort of. You are at least partially intangible.

Oomph: Never forget Red.

"Oomph will never forget you Red!" After saying this, you promptly forget about Red.

Suddenly you remember about your legendary destruction of Super Bubba's castle! Or maybe that was Omph, destroyer of evil, who did that. Your memory is kind of hazy. You ask the Shyguy if there are any undersea castles nearby.

The Shyguy replies in the negative. He does tell you that the castle in the middle of the Aqua Resort landscape - called The Center - has a few underwater sections. Good for you, since regular Koopas tend to be able to swim underwater for limited amounts of time. You're not too sure about the rest of the crew, though. Amadeus would probably blow up on contact with any more water or something.

Wait. You remember to thank the ghost suddenly. You look at Bradley and start speaking: "Also, thank Bra..D...ely you being good club retriever for Oomph. I think whimpy spectre good for something, which is compliment by the way."

You begin following the Shyguy regardless of what anyone else does or thinks. Meanwhile, you speak to Zach: "How does Zach-Zach-Aree-Ach see the future? He can barely not see where going with funny dark glasses on. He cannot see invisible blocks like Oomph does, which I does all the time totally not randomly. Yup Yup!"

Joe: Don't trust the Shyguy. Who knows what this guy might really be up to?

You remain firm and unmoving. Even if the group does follow the Shyguy, you plan to tag along from a distance. You know, just to be safe. You've seen your fair share of bait-based military traps.

Zach: Go with the Shyguy, but stay on guard. It might be a trap.

You take off your sunglasses to make sure that you're seeing this right. You've gone to defeat some wretched boss and collecting a powerful plot trinket... and out of nowhere, a Shyguy offers you an expensive hotel stay? This is fishy. You feel confident that there's nothing you couldn't face in deadly combat, but at the same time... what if the Shyguy is merely a loyal servant of something much larger and more terrible? What if he pulls a lever and drops you into a seething pit of magma? What in the gods' names would cause someone to build a light blue crystal castle in the middle of a series of rock platforms!?

"Well, I guess we should take advantage of such opportunities. It's doutful we will come across them in the future," you say, ignoring your very mild suspicions. It's doubtful your keen intuition will ever lead you astray.

You follow along, and reply to Oomph: "I don't see the future, I just use common sense. Think about it, what are the odds that people will be this friendly when we go to get the other stars? And if you could see invisible blocks, you would not call them invisible, would you?"

Amadeus: Ask the Shyguy for one of those awesome masks.

You ask the Shyguy for one of those awesome masks. You could be even more intimidating wearing one of those!

It responds in its usual nasally, high-pitched voice: "Why, absolutely! I don't carry any spares around, but I'm sure the servants have plenty of extras stocked in the storage room back in The Center. Wouldn't want to be a maskless Shyguy!" He motions for you and your allies to follow him, and heads off to The Center.

Turn Outro

Due to popular vote, (most of) the Heroes joined the Shyguy in walking across a series of bridges and grassy platforms over the water. Wood creaked under their feet occasionally, and Amadeus tripped at one point, nearly falling into the water again. Thankfully, the Shyguy caught him, and affirmed him that it is one of his duties to keep visitors safe. Amadeus pretended to breathe a sigh of relief. Amadeus does not actually need to breathe.

A few minutes later, the grand doors of The Center opened unto the Heroes and their host, seemingly of their own volition. Joe, following along a few feet away, noticed that the castle is, indeed, not made of unmelting ice as he had previously suspected. Bradley, Oomph and Amadeus recognized it as the same material that the Podoboos' room back in the Forest of Piranha Plants was made of.

Upon entering a grand, empty hallway adorned with various wall hangings, the Shyguy host lead the Heroes through The Center as he blathered on about the history and makings of the building. Interestingly, he said very little about the previously mentioned "Count Bloop". Bradley realized he had finally found someone to really look up to.

And then, suddenly, tragedy struck.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Like a rupture in reality itself, a pillar of darkness erupted from the ground, waving black tendrils to and fro. The Shyguy stopped in his tracks, his speech interrupted by the emergence of a being so dark, and so evil, that Bowser would be quaking in his boots.

The being, before the Heroes could get a good look at it, thrust something similar to a spear straight through the Shyguy host's heart! Blood burst from his chest, and he fell to the ground, limp. The dark assassin stood, walked forward a few steps, pointed to the Heroes and spoke in an alien-sounding voice.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

"We understimated you. Your quick defeat of the corrupted King was a wretched rip in our grand scheme. But it did benefit us in one way-" said the shadowy figure, stopping to laugh mid-sentence. "-in that we gained control of your most powerful ally."

Oomph began to barrel forward towards the figure. He was the first to recognize the similarity. "Where did shadowy evilkoopa take Taric and Ochita!?" Joe quickly grabbed him by the back of his iron helmet. There was no telling what kind of power lie within that pitch black monstrosity.

"You will not succeed. Your fanciful wizards cannot manipulate the Magic forever. One day very soon, they will grow tired and collapse. And when that day comes..." The figure stepped back with one foot and held his weapon - which looked exceedingly similar to the Starlance - towards the sky. "...we will erupt forth from the Origin, and consume your world faster than the blink of an eye."

Out of nowhere, the Center went dark. Not completely dark - just dark enough to impair vision a little. Bradley, of course, had no such problems, being a Boo and all.

"Unfortunately, we cannot stay. We hope you enjoy the modifications made to your current quest. See you soon, poor children of Magic!" With that, the figure and the pillar behind him disappeared.

The Center was still dark, and the Shyguy remained dead on the ground. There were exits to the northeast and northwest, but that was unimportant for now. Bradley took off his cap in honor of the dead Shyguy friend. He never got to know the guy.
