Mushroom Kingdom Wars RTD: Turn 16, the Ochita that Neverwas...
« Reply #317 on: July 30, 2011, 11:59:21 am »

Turn 16

Location: Forest of Piranha Plants (various)
Time: Night
Weather: Cold
Light: Scarce

Turn Intro

Dangerous territory calls for dangerous action. Unfortunately for one of the team, their action was a bit too risky. Will they survive this unfortunate turn of events?

Turn Results

Taric: Break the barrier!

You strike the rainbow barrier with your spear, over and over. However, it won't budge. Each time you attack it, you're knocked back, as if you're attacking pure steel! The countdown on the ground is on 1. As far as you can tell, you've only got one action left before whatever happens at the end is going to happen. It's now or never. Try to break free, or try to solve the puzzle as fast as you can!

Spoiler: Can't Break Free (click to show/hide)

Red: Activate Deus Ex Machina!

While it is true that you were thankfully saved by a poorly crafted Deus Ex Machina, you cannot transform into your real Deus Ex Machina form -- or, Super Form -- without the aid of a Golden Star! And you really have no idea where you would get one of those, anyway. As you contemplate this, you watch as your friends head off in various directions. You should probably follow one of them. You know, in case they need protection.

Spoiler: Deus Ex Denied (click to show/hide)

Ochita: Enter the darkness. You must find out more.

You put your right foot forward, straight into the possibly artificial darkness that so easily devoured your pseudo-fireball. It doesn't take you more than a few seconds to be completely enveloped. At first, there's a terrible, awful pain, like someone's chopped off three of your limbs at once. But then, there's...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

...nothing.

Ochita has DIED!
Ochita has been transported to the Neverwas
Ochita has left the game

Bradley: Run away, to the north!

You hear your friends' voices and footsteps to the north, so you float as fast as you can that way. Unfortunately, you get lost somehow, and end up in a cube-shaped room somewhere. In the middle of the room is a gargantuan red pipe apparently leading downwards (but it's hard to tell with warp pipes). Around the walkway leading up to, and the platform under the pipe is a thick sheet of low-lying lava.

All this running around so fast has caused you to lose 1 MP. Maybe you should slow down now.

Spoiler: Meet the Pipe (click to show/hide)

Oomph: Grab coins, then head to the grand hallway.

You head to the right (east??) and grab the three giant coins floating in the air. Since each giant coins corresponds to 50 gold, you've gained 150 gold! Congratulations!

Yeah, that was what you were waiting for. You head back, towards the hallway with elaborate ancient architecture. You notice the hallway is somehow lit, but you can't tell where it's coming from. After all this, you stop halfway down the hall to wait for your friends.

Fuzz: Follow Oomph down the grand hallway.

Best for friends to stick together, right? You follow Oomph, finding him in the middle of the grand hallway. You both stop in your tracks even more than you already were stopped when you see a large stone Piranha Plant trapped inside a decaying warp pipe that probably doesn't even work properly. Fortunately for you, despite expectations, it doesn't come to life. At least not yet.

Turn Outro

That's it for Ochita. He's gone, and he won't be coming back. Or will he?

Spoiler: Will he!? (click to show/hide)

Taric is faced with a do-or-die situation. How will this end?

Bradley find himself in a haunting room filled with inopportune lava. Fortunately for him, he can fly.

As Red adjusts to his new form, Oomph and Fuzz are blocked by a literal block of stone, carved into the shape of a Piranha Plant.

Look behind the blocked pipe. If there's nothing there, try and clear the statue out of the pipe with my hammer.
The majority of life's problems can be solved with a hammer. Or at least, the ones involving the removal of stone statues.

Taric, its not that hard. I'll give you a hand.

Think literally. What is IN a word? What is a word made out of?

I already thought of that! I still don't see how a letter solves this puzzle.

Read the riddle again. Follow the words literally while thinking of letters.

...

Ok, one last attempt.

This riddle is obviously supposed to give you instructions for what to do to the spear. Obviously it is something you can physically do since it doesn't seem to mention magic in any way.

Look at the riddle again:

"Instruct ye here I will, traveler
For this spear, it's dangerous
Perform the action found below
On the spear, lest you find yourself
Coping with the final blow

What's in Brim that's can't be seen when trimming?
What hides from thee, yet shows in her?
What's found in Dine, but not when dining?
What's shown when praying, but lost when preying?
Lastly, what's fourth when it comes to shaking?"

Break it in half first of all. One part makes plain sense (the first bit): The spear is dangerous and you must perform the action given to you in the second stanza of the riddle on the spear itself, lest something bad happen.

So your first clue is that it's something you do to the spear itself.

Second clue is that the second part of the riddle describes a physical action of some kind.

When I look at the second part, I see that it is made of 5 lines of words. Typically, these kinds of riddles have a single word as the answer so it either gives you the whole word in one go, or it gives you parts of it at a time. Since the riddle doesn't stick to one general theme, it looks like it is giving you letters. 5 lines, 5 letters makes sense, each line gives you a letter of the whole word.

Third clue, the action you have to do is most likely 5 letters long.

So, we turn to the lines of the riddle itself. We break it up into 5 separate lines and look at each one to see what letter it gives us. The fancy language is usually there to confuse you to the true meaning of the line, so you have to translate it to plain english for it to make sense. Here's the first line:

What is in brim that isn't in trimming?

We are looking for a letter in here somewhere, so since it doesn't make sense in real life or the game world, we have to take the words themselves literally.

That's far too much help, but I feel sorry for your weakness to riddles. I just hope dwarmin or serious doesn't take advantage of this and slam us with a wicked one. They seem the type to come up with a real mind twister. :-\

Break the spear.

Well, it took some effort but congratulations on figuring it out, even though you had to get Zako to help ya (and solve most of it).

In the meantime, I drew this since Oomph and Fuzz haven't been getting enough illustration love.

Success!! Ladies and gentlemen, I'VE DONE IT AGAIN!

*takes a bow*

And I would like to join. Here's my character sheet:

No I wasn't inspired by Indiana Jones suddenly, but if you think so then blame Dungeons of Dredmore since I've been playing it a lot lately.
