...Would whoever was spamming alerts in the Steam group kindly cut it out? It's not cool to come home from work to over a dozen 'event notifications' cluttering my entire taskbar.

you mean elves with loads of stone loaded onto their backs while walking on their hands with dwarves holding their legs to guide them?

1) Get someone to make a server you can play on.
2) Get a telnet client for whatever you want to play on.
3) Hook the telnet client up to the DF server.
4) ...
5) !!FUN!!

EDIT: Late edit when I realized that I'd directed someone to this very thread in my post. Which is in this thread.  >.<

Does it support tilesets yet?

Yes, it does. Choose the appropriate tileset from the drop-down list of servers. Each server has the default, Mayday, and Cootue tilesets available.

To avoid chaotic behaviour, you should make the server behave in in a way similar to succcession games:
One player has control of the game at a time and the server will switch to the next player on major game events, like changing seasons, vile forces of darkness, (semi)megabeasts, dwarven deaths, or after a given time limit.

Would that be possible?

1) Get someone to make a server you can play on.  They need to get a world set up, etc. Try asking in the Dwarf Fortress Multiplayer thread (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=87683.0).  I saw a few other threads around with servers in them.
2) Get a telnet client for whatever you want to play on.
3) Hook the telnet client up to the DF server.

You are aware you linked to thread you are in, yes?

If I'm not mistaken, Mayday is very similar to Phoebus. If you want, I can make a tutorial for using other tilesets. It's not terribly difficult.

Tutorial for using other graphics packs with DFMP:

1. Navigate to your DFMP folder, and go to the folder named sshclient
2. Open putty.exe
3. Click the first settings configuration for the server you wish to use, and click load.
4. On the left menu, under Window, click Appearance.
5. Click the "Change..." button under font settings.
6. Navigate to the font file in your chosen graphics pack. Font files should have the extension .ttf. With Phoebus, the graphics are actually in a PNG file, and not a font file. I'm working on making a font file. You all should love me.
7. Go back to the Session menu, type a new name into the box above the configuration settings list, and click save.
8. Enjoy!
