On tools and military training

Is the tool quality and material influential on the job speed? (That is, will a steel axe allow for faster cutting of trees than an iron axe)
Also, Military dwarves in the '10 version seem to learn very slowly. Is this due to the addition of training weapons? How does the teacher job influence military learning?
Will sparring with live weapons allow for a faster training?

I don't believe axe (or pick) quality have any effect on the rate of woodcutting (or mining)... If they do have any effect, it's minor.

Military training is extremely slow for dwarves who start with no military skills.  After they gain a few skill levels they'll start sparring, which greatly accelerates training.

Teacher skill increases the experience a dwarf giving a demonstration grants those watching.  The teacher's skill level in the skill being taught also has an effect, as well as the students' observer (and student?) skills.

I don't think the weapon type affects training rate, but real combat, perhaps against animals or disarmed goblins, increases skill far quicker than any kind of training, and training weapons allow real combat to last longer.

Quality and materials of tools don't affect their 'working rate'. For weapons and armors, the only difference ( according to wiki ) is at masterwork level which boosts capacities by 2x.

Yes, military training is slow but if you uses danger room or live fire, it'll be much faster. However barrack training is slow but totally safe. Training weapon was for earlier version where military used to do live-fire drills on each other, it's not been done since removal of arsenal dwarf, I believe. It can be abused for live fire training if you strip enemies naked and drop them in to be bruised  :D

 Danger room: A dwarven device for both population and pet control. They train up skills so fast  its amazing.

Although they are excellent for training your resident medic team. Then again, a simple training spear would be enough to inflict some minor wounds to a armor-less test subject.

I believe a group of three naked/cloak-less dwarves, (named Curly, Larry and Moe), placed in a training spear danger room and having the lever pulled a single time would be enough to periodically train your medics.
If they survive various cycles of torture and recovery, or your medics attain legendary skill, give them some armor and weapons to make them into a real military unit. And dont forget to give them nice rooms, or place some statues in your hospital.

If you want to skill up your medics with danger rooms, put glass or silver trap components in there. And use recruits that are incredibly quick to heal. Just give them body armor/helms so they don't actually die.

For military training - either squads or 3-4 with 2 of them active at any time to spar.

I'm trying to set-up a leader type guy to be a drill sergeant by boosting his organizing skills quite a bit; plus he seems to enjoy teaching recruits, so his teaching skill is going up slowly but surely. Has anyone tried this: Urist McDrillSarge the legendary +5 organizer, leader and teacher training 7 recruits at a time?

Majority of inefficiency in my squad training comes from dabbling soldiers performing demonstrations while the skilled ones sit with the students. Is there a way to prevent this?

Currently I have a lower spine damaged dodging teacher, but HE always manages to crawl to the barracks in time for demonstrations. At least my military will know how to fight on the ground.
