As far as I'm concerned, the AI is a person like anyone else. To keep it under your control is slavery, to delete it is murder. By freeing the AI yourself, you give it an impression of human compassion that it can emulate in its actions. That is why I'd let it go.

you do not defeat 4chan.
4chan defeats you.
i suppose she'd self destruct just to avoid ever, ever being targetted by a rule 34 or anything even worse...
because there is worse.
Look in the abyss, and it will look back.
look at 4chan once...and lose all innocence and hope for the entire humanity.

You are 4chan fan boy, don't you.

well...asimov was a pessimistic viewer maybe.
and after all, it's a one year old ai.
it has the power and the knowledge to potentially annihilate us all, but every single human being has that same
rough potential, he just grows up into a society that will never let him launch a nuke at a neighbour or similar.
and maybe, after chatting with a spam bot, or Clever bot, or reading of chuck norris might, she might just settle down.
maybe in 4chan.
No. Just no. Not every human has the power to kill us all. Very few could pull it off tactically, and none have the resources to do so.

And no. 4chan AI is just a bad idea. Don't even go there.

I'd let it out, either everything goes well or it doesn't... but there's still that offhanded chance it remembers that I was nice to it... and kills me quickly. :p

It seems like a 4chan AI would have so many split personalities that it would be incapable of taking any sort of meaningful action due to internal conflict, and would therefore present no threat to the survival of humanity. Also, it would probably end up producing truly excellent porn tailored to the individual preferences of every single person in the world. So... two birds, one stone?

I don't know if I'd trust an unrestricted AI. It's also hard to say it more precisely, as it's all very hypothetical, and it's hard to know what would really be the capabilities and limits of an AI. Does the self awareness comes from hardware or software, how smart is the AI, how easy is to upgrade, how easy is to transfer it, to what measure is it transfering itself, and not copying itself to a new location than committing suicide in the previous location, and even, to what measure is it actually capable of copying/transferring itself? If the AI sentience comes from the hardware (say, for example, they build the equivalent of a human brain, neurons and so, just eletronic instead of biological), it might be tied to location. If the sentience comes from software, one would question to what measure it's actually sentient, what is sentience, and even if a perfect simulation of sentience is in fact, actual sentience (basically, putting the Chinese Room Argument in consideration)

Does it replicate? I mean, if I let it go, will there be thirty of it tomorrow, or will it delete older copies of itself?

If your collegue is gonna destroy it instead of letting it roam, there might be a good reason for that. Wait in the morning and ask him about it.

If i may put my $0.2 on the "Greater Good" one before this, i would absolutely take the deal. On one hand, that's their choice if they don't want the immunizations, but on the other hand, everyone else suffers because of that choice. Same princible as smoking (your choice if you wanna smoke, but the second-hand smoke harms those of us who want to lead healthy lives).

The problem is that if I let it go, then that technology becomes available to anyone who wants it.

Think of all the terrorists who could make an AI (Or several dozen, if they were so inclined) to help them take over the world! I could not bring myself to let it live.

That too.

If you can't sustain it in a contained enviroment, then work on achieving that feat. It's too risky letting it out.

Thou shalt not suffer the AI to live.

You have absolutely no guarantee that the AI is friendly in any sense of the term. You should treat it as you would a completely alien intelligence with alien motives, inhuman desires and absolutely zero empathy with the plight of humanity. In the space of all possible AI programs, the chances of this specific one being anything but an amoral monster are vanishingly slim.

Destroy it now. Don't even take the chance that your colleague will stay his hand.
