Anvils for goblins
« on: June 25, 2011, 04:33:37 am »

I've changed the goblin entity to make them playable in fortress mode, copied all the nobel positions from the dwarves, so they can have managers, brokers, etc, and (I think) given them all the dwarven jobs as well.

However, I couldn't take an anvil with me at embark, and when my first caravan turned up, couldn't request one from the liaison.

What do I need to change to enable goblins to get anvils?

Copy the [PERMITTED_JOB:  ]s and [PERMITTED_REACTION:  ]s from the dwarf entity to the goblin entity.
You can probably remove most of them, I think you need JOB:METALCRAFTER for anvils, but it might be one of the other smithing jobs, I've never disabled them individually.

Nope, the problem has to do with the availability of iron.
Anvils can only be made out of iron or steel. If there is no iron available on your civ's home site then there will be no iron anvils on embark and you cannot  buy them from traders either. Dwarves don't have this problem, since their [PERMITTED_REACTION:STEEL_MAKING]-tag guaranties them eternal amounts of steel so there is always the option for steel anvils.

So for the goblins you need to either give them steel as well or make a similiar dummy-reaction for iron like the one the Fortress-Defence-Mod is using.

Ah, thanks.  I'll have a think and see what would be best for my mod.

Alternatively, I suppose I could expand the types of metal they can be made from (Wikipedia says bronze and even stone used to be used to make them, although that makes inferior anvils, and as AFAIK there is no way to make anvil quality affect the quality of the items made on them, I wouldn't want to allow too many substandard materials to be used).

A third option might be introduce a way of making anvils without already having one, perhaps through a series of reactions.

For example, you start by making a "stone anvil"*, and then use that in a reaction with a non-ferrous metal to make an "inferior anvil", and then use that in another reaction with iron or steel to make a real anvil that can be used in a forge.

* As in, an item called "stone anvil", rather than an anvil using stone as the material.
