Lemmingball Z
« on: June 24, 2011, 10:55:54 am »

http://www.lbz3d.com/

For those of you who love DBZ combat (if not necessarily the redundant story that comes with it) you have to check this out. Someone mentioned it in a fighting game thread and I felt like I should spread the word.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDpmvcBFy8o

At first blush it's not very nuanced, but once you figure out how the many attributes come together to let you fire off attacks quicker and do more damage, and how to teleport your ass off, you start finding a lot of tactical joy. And there's something pretty gratifying about nuking your opponent from the sky, unleashing a barrage of energy missiles to follow them, then drilling them with a maximum power energy beam. I'm still getting the hang of using all all the tricks they make available to you, but I can roflstomp the stupid AI 4-3 so I figure I've at least got the basics down.

Quote
Lemmingball Z is a fighting game for linux and windows,
loosely based on `Dragonball Z` the hit anime.
And when we say loosely based, we mean with a big twist.
Instead off the normal characters from the anime,
this game features cute LEMMINGS fighting DBZ style!

LBZ’s main features:
• Destructable 3d terrain •
• Ability to add your own levels/characters/moves to the game •
• Multiplayer with 2-4 players online or local •
• Good old-fashion HotSeat play •
• Slowmotion, like in "The Matrix" •
• Fancy graphics, like cellshading and stuff •
• Netplay, without configuring or hamachi •
• Stupid AI to practice with •
• Blood! lots of it! :)

And yeah, I know this is a 10-year-old game. But apparently it's still getting updates.

When I first read the topic title I thought it was going to be about Lemmings Paintball.

I also thought it was Lemmings related as well.

"Let's Go."
:starting door creaks open:
"KAMIHAMI-HA!"
:A huge chunk of wall is missing as several lemmings are thrown across the level from the magnitude of 1 lemming being over 9000:

Actually, if Lemmings (classic ones) could be modded at all, that would be funny to watch.

Man this thing is addictive.

So it goes like this.

Your power level is everything. (The default settings are "Start 10k" and max = "It's over 9000k!") It dictates how much damage your moves do, how fast they charge up, how fast you move in all states, how fast you can throw beam attacks, how big many of your attacks can get, how many times you can throw super special devastator moves in row before the power gets downgraded for a few moments.

Your power level carries over from each round of the match into the next, so it's a long-term tactical consideration.

You get power by doing the whole DBZ rage out thing...or by taking a beating. So as you whoop a guy's ass, he gets stronger and stronger and stronger. Meaning you need to outstrip his power growth even as you're kicking the shit out of him, or one good beam attack will nuke you. And this is against the stupid AI, who spends way more time throwing piddly ki balls than it should.

But it gets better. All the super Saiyan and other special forms double your power level when activated in most cases. Meaning, on your end, you can ramp up your power level tremendously quickly and nuke the fuck out of someone, but you can also fall way behind over the course of several rounds, when you've got say 128k energy and they're over 9000k!. I'm kind of scared to play a better AI, because the stupid AI, between the beatings and stuff, keeps pace with your power level easily. I spent over 2 minutes charging up my power level through z-raging (the AI got stuck in a wall and did nothing) and barely got to 128k.

And then there's all sorts of other tactical options. The "aura" makes you go faster, charge faster, do more damage but you don't regen the stamina that lets you throw attacks. (When you run out of stamina, you start using life to power your attacks instead. Once you've done too much damage to yourself, you lose consciousness for a second and fall out of the sky. Not good.) Then there's the Kaoken form that slows time but eventually gouges your life bar.

Melee is a button mashing mess, where there's lot of combos you can do but getting them to work in the mayhem is tough. Melee moves use the same buttons as power attacks. They switch over between the two when you close melee range. Staying in melee range is tough though. So you run into melee, spam buttons and get sucked into a hyper fighting sequence. You have to hit buttons in sequence and if you beat the AI, they go flying. It's tougher than it looks, I haven't won against the stupid AI yet.

This game really captured some parts of DBZ combat that the Playstation games missed. Honestly, it's brilliant compared to those. The only thing that drags it down is the melee combat, but on the flip side, it's power attack game play is far better than anything else I've played. Having only three "action" buttons, your first instinct is to spam. But being effective with your ranged attacks actually requires a lot of judgment and control, because there's at least 8 things your  "beam attack/kick" button does when combined with arrow keys and other buttons.

I've wanted to play this for years, but have never gotten it to work on any computer I've had in that time.

Guess I'll try again.

Wow, this is really fun.
Nothing more satisfying than watching the AI run straight into a Spirit Bomb.

Had no problems getting it work on Win7 x64. Not really sure what this requires in terms of hardware and software.

But damn is it fun. I wish there were more sandbox options for matches, like being able to set who your opponents are. Also a PURE training mode would be nice. The AI might be stupid, but they're still aggressive.

There's some cute moves out there and they manage to mix up some of the abilities in a fun way (by DBZ fighting game standards anyways.)

Also there's a few bugs to note:

-On the character select screen, it's actually picking the character below your selection, not the one you're one.

-Some character move lists seem inconsistent with what's in game. Freeza has an "extras" move that also functions from one of the beam attack key combos and it's not listed anywhere.

And on that note, Freeza has some really cheap ass moves :P Said Extra move is basically a bitch slap that cannot miss if it has a direct line to the other player, and it may even seek through terrain. It just appears as like a wind tunnel in front of him and BAM, the other dude goes sailing. I knocked Yamcha into the ground and then just repeatedly slammed him deeper into it with this move....from the top of the map.

The Death Ball that's like 5% the size of the level fully charged is pretty fun too. Zarbon (who I chose by accident) has a Bolas that you charge up to make larger, then you send it out and can control with the keys. It grabs someone and slams them around while holding them in place for a death attack. He's also got a parallel beam attack that when fully charged is about the 10 characters in height.

As much as I love Vegeta he doesn't seem that great. Sure, he has insanely powerful beam attacks that reach across the screen on the lowest power. But three of them, plus Super Final Flash which is a parallel beam attack? It's kind of overkill. His special is he throws out some "Kicuffs" which when they strike the player, you can trigger them to explode or use them to instant transmission right next to them.

Except the explosions are laughably small and useless, and the AI is so good at melee combat, the second you IT next to them they just beat the shit out of you.

Ok, in truth, he's actually pretty beast, as you have no less than 4 ways to seriously hurt someone. None of this beam-based attacks are crappy in the slightest. There's just not much variety to them and his special is a waste compared to how good others are.

If every character is as different I could be screwing with this for a while. I was King of the Hill among my friends at Budokai, after some more practice I might want to try a real match or two.

Vegeta's pretty cool.

Fat Buu is also pretty cool.  I haven't played anybody else except Cell and it was a 4-man fight, so that was pretty ridiculous.

I'd be willing to do some multiplayer in a little while, but I'm busy at the moment.

What's with the horizontal-only beams?  Those are kind of useless.

They're good for when the AI is just standing there like an idiot, because they do decent damage.
