The free-ness comes with a cost.
Free players are really limited.

Limited how?
I'm pretty certain it's just that the waves of new players from the f2p shift won't have the same variety of items as a more established player. A handful of the game's weapons open wildly different playstyles for their classes or are generally superior to the default loadouts, putting newer players at a disadvantage. Further, their lack of hats will mark them out as Poor and Irish (/forumjoke), which depending on the server can make you sniperbait or get you branded as an inexperienced, and therefor worthless, team member. Just grin and bear it, most players aren't actually that good anyway.

To the best of my knowledge, there are no actual mechanical limitations on free accounts. Just play, find a class/gamestyle combination you like and chill. I personally recommend the balloon race v1 map and the prop hunt gamemode. Each puts an interesting twist on the conventional gameplay and only requires you to spend a little extra time pulling down the specialist maps before you play for the first time.

EDIT: Turns out I am full of crap. Read the FAQ linked in the post above for full details.

Centration. Similar to Spacestation 13, but in 3D and first-person. Sounds damn awesome.

The primary limitation on free players is the backpack only being 50 slots when there are currently 99 dropable and craftable weapons including 7 promo reskins. Also the lack of ability to obtain and wear hats means that you will be unable to gain the set bonuses for those sets that include hats which is all bar the christmas sets so far.

1. Everyone has Portal.  Everyone.  That's like Obama coming up and telling everyone he's abolished the air tax.
This is also a more valid point because of the "Obama likes Portal" hoax.

Hmm? As a free player, I can wear hats just fine. The problem1 is that you can't receive any hats from the RNG. You can still get and wear promotional hats.

1. Honestly, it's not much of a problem.

But you'll look inferior compared to Gentlemen who actually wear hats!
