ALSO Damn you Valve. Make Portal Free too, I still haven't even played that....
It was free for over 20 days months ago.
REALLY???!?!

\\Loads Steam\\

Patience, patience! It's not free now - that was just a promotion during the Mac update.

That said, everybody who pre-ordered Portal 2 got a free copy of Portal 1... and since practically everyone who pre-ordered the sequel already had the original, there are lots of free copies of Portal 1 just taking up virtual space in people's giftable game list.  ;)

Portal won't ever be free because

1. Everyone has Portal.  Everyone.  That's like Obama coming up and telling everyone he's abolished the air tax.

2.  Portal doesn't have a ludicrously profitable item shop that's just unnecessary enough to not piss everyone off.  Even free TF2 will be making mad bank for gaben and his crew.

I bought TF2 awhile back, discovered my reflexes have slowed considerably with age, and let it sit a bit. Might give it a try again, though. I'll fit right in with all the new players (read: don't know the maps, die 100 times without knowing why).

See my above post. Portal 1 costs $9.99 on Steam - it was free for a short promotion around the Mac update, but it now costs money again.

Ah, sorry, I already have it promised to someone. That said, there's a good chance someone hanging around here has a spare copy...

Well, there is a team fortress thread for this type of thing.
People who don't enter that thread (and somehow who doesn't have team fortress may not have a reason to) won't see the update.  A new thread is warranted.  I saw it somewhere else and came to see if you guys were talking about it.

I'd like to play the game sometime.  When I'm done with the semester.  I'll keep an eye on this.

Proof of my earlier point :P
Very cool. I wouldn't have found out without the new thread.

You know, when I got off my computer, I was thinking, "Maybe we actually need a new thread to tell people about how TF2 is now free."

Meh. At least there will be more new players (like me).

There will be lots of hackers now.
And your logic behind that is?

Does the free version work with Gmod?
It should, since its the same version except you can't wear hats.

Hacking was rare before because of VAC.  Now you can just make a new steamaccount if you get banned and TF2 is free.

Get $5 Steam Dollars and buy a Key or two... Boom, you now have 'purchased' the game...

I believe the jumper weapons are the cheapest items in the game (£0.29/$0.49/Pretend there's a euro symbol here because my keyboard doesn't have one0.49). You do need to put more money into your steam wallet- but can then use it as part of any game buying on steam.

Anyway on the talk of hackers. There are already lots of complaints on the steam forums about increased hacker numbers, so it could be an issue.

The free-ness comes with a cost.
Free players are really limited.

Limited how?

From the Free-to-play FAQ:

Quote from: Valve
Q. Won’t going Free to Play mean more griefers and cheaters?
We’re increasing our focus on making sure that hostile players can’t ruin your fun. Specifically, we’ll be keeping a close eye on players exploiting the ability to make infinite free accounts to bypass bans. We’ve built systems that’ll allow us to measure and track what these players are doing, and respond quickly.
