ICEBERG!!?
« on: June 23, 2011, 07:19:32 pm »

So the Dwarf Oddom was swimming out into the deep through the Gulf of somethingorother (The Ocean of Racks) on The Really Hot End of The Planet... and a day out from Hill of Eviscerators Island he was suddenly caught up in a huge swirling vortex. The sea churned around her, filling the sky and even the sea below her  with mist, then leveled out around 1 or 2 deep on the surface. The occasional 7-high wave still swept across the surface, flinging her around, but the mist had settled and her curiosity began to rise.

On Oddom swam, searching for the center of the disturbance, hoping for a new volcanic island to claim, or some other safe harbour, since the falling sea kept moving her east anyways no matter how hard she tried to fight it. Instead of land or lava, Oddom found a giant cliff of ice, as high as she could see, and as far down as well.

Even farther on, into the deeper waves, Oddom swam with powerful strokes. As she swam she mused - oceans  (when they do freeze)  usually freeze into flat icepack. These cliffs were something else entierly, and what was this?? A beach, so near, yet out of reach in the sloshing waves. Oddom was so close to safety, yet could not pull herself up onto the frozen "shore". Though it had the form of one, this was yet no island. It was entierly ice.

No map had ever hinted at such a thing. No record she had ever seen suggested such a wall of ice could ever exist this far from the frozen south pole. What was it?

--------------------------

really. What the heck? This is no regular line of a wall, either. It's all jagged and seems to conform to some sort of biome boundary. Anyone else ever see something like this?

Awhile ago I was messing with the advanced parameters to create a world with very extreme weather patterns and managed to find a site with both a freezing biome and a scorching biome. Didn't actually play the map other than embarking.

weird double-post thing instead of an edit. So odd. Forum being weird today.

EDIT: Rogue wave let me alt-move onto one of the lower parts. There are seagulls on here.
This is so weird, the ocean is in The Hot Zone. Far end of the world from the icy pole. Trying to walk back over to the 5zlevel-out-of-the-water cliffs.

Ya icebergs exist, that's what those unembarkable ice things are at the poles, but ya they are rare, and not coded all that well so instead of being an iceberg it's more of a giant ice pillar that absorbes water.

But usually only one pole. The land at the shore of this end of the world is all dried-up ponds and camels and stuff. And either way, I didn't think the ice at the poles had cliffs in the middle of the ocean, I thought it was more ice-pack, and dead flat.

EDIT: PICTURES!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I'm uploading a save to the DFFD in case anyone wants to experiment.

That's what I thought. I was just excited thinking it was a regular underwater volcano!

probably some biome screw up.
imagine it's a magical island, kill the inhabitants, claim it as your own and use it as your base of operations!
or use the lever of magmatic happiness...

I would, but it doesn't show up on the world map. It would be hard to find, even with embark-anywhere. Also, there are no inhabitants, except seagulls.

I'm uploading a save to the DFFD in case anyone wants to experiment. It's a save from the phoebus 3.25d version of Deon's Genesis mod.
(I find the pictures entertaining in adventure, while they distract in fortress version.)

I'll edit this for the save when it's done uploading.

EDIT : here's the save

Hmm, seagulls on the ice? They should be penguins :). Are you playing some mod? Genesis?

If so, I should probably make seagulls to not appear in frozen ocean biomes :).

Yeah, seagulls should be reasonably close to shore!

...Is that not what you meant?

I'm not sure this IS a frozen ocean biome, just an ocean that is freezing, but yeah huge flocks of seagulls, like a dozen or so, 5 or 6 world tiles out into the ocean. I have yet to figure out what causes the huge pillar of ice that goes so far out of the water. It doesn't seem to melt away even in the flash thaw/re-freezing that keeps happening (that's what's messing with the water levels).

Just have to say - Genesis Mod is pretty rad. Loving the more varied skin/teeth materials along with the extended adventurer reactions. Fortress mode is pretty great, too.

I just came across this iceberg while out crossing an ocean at night. Looking forward to climbing up these next patch if we can climb sheer ice walls!

Icebergs are terrible deathtraps. The ice defrosts and refreezes at a seemingly random rate.

I remember getting on one before out of curiosity. Walked into it, tile beneath me melted and I fell a Z level or two. And then another. And then the I began drowning and eventually the water froze me solid.

I like to imagine the last thing my adventurer saw were other adventurers' frozen form underneath that iceberg.

DFHack -> reveal all

Check is there is something in it, under it, or on it.

I've heard some ghost stories about the icebergs back in the 40d days. They're freaking dangerous. Thwaing and frozing randomly, behaving oddly. Teleporting, surrounding the adventurers. Damn scary stuff. I think I'll go now and do some Amundsen-esque polar expedition.
