Europa Universalis III. -Grand Strategy game. Has quite a few mods.
Hearts of Iron II&III. -Never played them, but I believe they're both also Grand Strategy games.
Victoria I&II. -Never played them, but I believe they're both also Grand Strategy games.
Crusader Kings. -Never played them, but I believe they're both also Grand Strategy games, though a lot more focused on dynasty things.

...That's all I can think of.

Dominions 3?

Iffin' yeh like Civ, you might try Masters of Magic, for all that it's a bit old. Fantasy civ, with neat stuff. Honestly, I don't really know how the newer civs play... last one I actually played was, uh... alpha centauri? That was pretty awesome.

Never played th'total war stuff, so can't say either was s'far as that goes.

Heroes of Might and Magic is a pretty good series, generally the older ones, and I like 3 specifically.

I can easily (and strongly) recommend Hearts of Iron III and Europa Universalis III. The first is my favorite WWII grand strategy sandbox, the second is the most addicting non-WWII grand strategy I've ever played.

Victoria II is also a very fun and addicting. I've not spent as much time with it yet, but what time I've spent on it has been rewarding.

In short, Paradox titles just "have it" for me. Enough complexity and depth to make it an engrossing challenge, but with the all -important addictive qualities too many games lack.

Dominions 3 is very good, but the AI is terrible. Multiplayer is pretty active, I believe.

All that said, our tastes may be different. I really liked Civ IV, didn't really get into Civ V. Rome: TW and Medieval II: TW were the best in the TW series IMO, but I've yet to try the latest. Empire: TW kinda left me feeling used and disgusted.

Edit: to agree with Astral, HoMM3 is the best. In fact, don't bother with any of the others.

I've played Shogun Total war 2 and I think its way better than Empire was and I recommend it.

In the same vein as Heroes of Might and Magic III and Dominions there's also Lords of Magic and the Age of Wonders series.

Knights of Honor - probably the only Total War style game I've played where the AI didn't go total retard at some point. More focused on economy and diplomacy rather than combat (wars are costly as hell, primarily due to the populace growing tired of war), but it's still got a sort of seperate combat engine. It feels more like an actual kingdom manager than a world conquering game. Oh, and it's real-time, but it goes on slow enough and you can change the game speed using the -, + and * keys from 0.3x normal speed to 10x normal speed.

Dominions 3 AI performance can be enhaced by removing native troops from provinces (poptype=102, I think). This makes it recruit more frequently higher quality national troops and unique site recruitables.

Another vote for Sid Meier's Alpha Centuari. Plus it's now available on gog. Gog said they're working on to re-release the expansion, Alien Crossfire.

Read about Magna Mundi here

If you have Europa Universalis 3 and the expansions, then you -need- to play Magna Mundi. It overhauls the entire game, improves it, and transcends it. So far, it's the only game that I've seen that comes close to simulating the Holy Roman Empire, which makes playing as a European country much more "fun", in that if you try to start shit with any HRE countries, they will curb stomp you, slap you around, take some provinces, and make your their bitch vassal.

You'll need to a lot of diplomacy and strategy to expand, and of course, military might.

And there's a metric-ton of other features that the mod adds. Resources now impact your countries economy, so for example, if you have a maritime empire, a shortage of ship supplies can cripple you. A land empire dependent on cavalry can be crippled by a shortage of horses or food. That also means that land empires that import their food can be brought to their knees with blockades. :D

Seriously. I cannot understate the awesomeness of this mod, and I only hope that the Magna Mundi game (yes, paradox is now creating a game based on the mod because of its overwhelming success) is even better than the mod. ^^

King Arthur the Role-playing Wargame has been compared to Total War. TW buffs saying it's like Total War-lite in terms of gameplay. Having not played Total War but plenty of other strat games, the battlefield gameplay in King Arthur seems fairly complex.
