3Section of the chapter: Cheveux's thoughts #2Well, the merchants knew nothing. One of them was holding an atyl short sword though. What's the impurity that makes atyl blue? There's no blue metal apart from...
that cursed one... Back in the mountainhomes we once dropped a boulder of microcline into a volcano, and it melted quickly. So it can't be microcline either. Maybe the liaison knows something, right now she's busy talking to Conan about our trade agreements.

Turns out our gem cutter was also a novice stone crafter. We need some more pots. To add to our food supplies, the furnace operator will be doing some plant gathering. It'll also help when the iron caps grow, and we need someone to process them. The caravan just arrived, Trigg seems to be eager to show them his prepared meals. The liaison tried to interrupt our sparring session, but Conan just told him to wait. And they barely brought any bars of metal? Even then, only non-weapons grade metal? We'll request a lot soon. At least cages can be melted. We'll put the animals in a pasture near the siege workshop. We're going to do a lot of melting. I think I'll move the cat to the food stockpiles, food is more important that bones for now. I somehow managed to sneak off with the merchant guard's atyl sword.
Moonstone, 1
Let's build some rooms for everyone! Meanwhile, our "armorsmith" is also being told to be bookkeeper. Will she ever get what she originally wanted? Meh, probably when we actually have metal. Meanwhile, I'm asking for some leather armor to be made for us. Wait, we have no leather? Merchants, slow down! TRIGG, WHAT WERE YOU THINKING? WHY WERE YOU TRYING TO COOK ARROW CAPS?
It's pretty amazing how good our leatherworker is. So many masterpieces. Looking at our metal stocks, we have a gold bar, a brass bar, a fine pewter bar, a lay pewter bar, a lead bar, a cap iron bar, a bryl bar, a bismuth bronze bar, and a whole 50 units of charcoal. I think I'm going to expand our clothier's area.
Opal, 1
Jaxy's kitten, who had guarded our food stockpiles, is now a cat. Our military will have simple leather armor, for now at least, while we get some more metal. Doren, leatherworker, insists that we only keep masterworks and exceptional armor, the rest should be traded away, apparently they're failures to her. In other news, trigg just ran out of food to cook. We've run out of leather, I think we could kill a few of those slimes out there...
Obsidian, 1
Slimes die very easily. And apparently people don't like to butcher them. Jaxy just asked to build a catapult right next to the sleeping areas for "practice". Sometimes I'm worried about his sanity. And our safety. More about our safety though.
Granite, 2
Conan's having a break so he can finally talk to the liaison. Cheveux was talking to me about atyl, ethyl, and the possibility of an even purer metal. I think it's possible, but how would we get it? Even dwarves cannot simply melt the impurities inside these amazing metals. To work with the metals, we just soften them to a usable state, they're nowhere near melted. Magma seems to have little effect, and if we work with anything hotter, we'll probably kill ourselves in the process. The metals are found in clusters, closer to the center being purer. If only we could find a huge atyl cluster... Dsarker just came running back from woodcutting, screaming something about a wol- "NO, IT WASN'T JUST A WOLF! IT WAS MORE THAN THAT! I SAW THE LOOK ON ITS FACE" shut up! I'll go check what it was.
Turns out it was a werewolf. It was fun to kill it, but seeing that corpse afterwards was a bit disgusting. I guess the phantom spiders did mean something, this place really is haunted. Hopefully the werewolf is as bad as it gets.
Trigg ran out of food again. And, migrants!
1: An animal caretaker (what do they even do?) who's also an adequate metalsmith. Pick up Conan's crossbow and get hunting.
2: Another leatherworker, also an axedwarf. More soldiers!
3: A... trapper? I suppose we'll train him in swords or something.
4: A butcher, and a good armorer. Sorry other wannabes, he's going to be our armorer.
5: A newbie siege operator. Maybe he can talk to jax about getting some training.
6: Urist McTrapper, to the military you go.
7: An adequate glassmaker. Good enough.
8: A talented engraver.
9: A peasant... good at crutch-walking?! Well, you're in the military.
10: A cheese making... woodcutter. Well, you'll be cutting wood.
11: Another glazer. Uh, military for you?
12: A fisherdwarf. Alright, you can fish.
13: A high master metalcrafter. Now THAT's a dwarf.
14: A woodworking swordsdwarf. Sword for you.
15: A leatherworker. We don't need your novice crafts, into the military!
16: Another high master gem cutter.
17: A potash maker. You can be a hauler.
18: A herbalist. I suppose you're useful.
19: Another miner. Can never have enough miners.
20: A tanner. Maybe we'll get some more leather.
21: A bowyer/furnace operator. We could use some marksmen, but we've already got a bowyer. Woodcrafting for you.
That was a lot of migrants. Our population went from 16 to 37, and we don't have enough rooms for everyone! Time to get mining.
Slate, 2
Our dyer was possessed! Should've made him a mechanic like G told me to. Anyway, I'm having a break from the military to carve some bones. Wait, she's a novice weaponsmith? Make sure she grabs the bryl! It's the sharpest edge we have! So we hid all the other metals, and she grabbed bryl. Good. Also took some horse leather, interesting...
She then comes up with this:
She may not be a legendary weaponsmith, but this sword will make her a legend. Everything's going well now, we've got a breeding pair of sheep for more food too.
Felsite, 2
Even more of the forest is being cleared. It's time to improve the fortifications. Apparently Conan became attached to a shield... Adding an extra layer of wall "just in case". Oh, and I'm building a larger quarry bush plot for trigg to cook with. The elves arrived, disgusted by our mass woodcutting. And we were equally disgusted by their "trade goods". Probably would've completely freaked out if they saw all the charcoal making below ground. Time to give our new squad some live combat training...
Somehow they released a grizzly bear, badly hurting one of our recruits. We need to build a hospital. For now, the area near the barracks will function as a temporary one. One of our multiple "high master" gem cutters has been assigned to soap making. Dsarker says he has:
Severe blood loss
Ability to stand lost
Motor nerve damage
Sensory nerve damage
And his left leg in general is torn.
Hematite, 2
Our recruit got a crutch, and soap. Judging by the damage, he'll probably keep that crutch for the rest of his life. I hope he gets good at using it. There was another werewolf sighting, quickly dealt with. The barracks and hospital will be near each other, on the edge of our wall. As we seem to have run out of stone (!!!), I'm expanding the living areas. That reminds me, we need to actually put beds in the rooms.
Malachite, 2
The hunter keeps complaining that his kill is gone. Apparently when you shoot a slime and tear its skin, it crumbles into a blob of unusable goo. Who knew? On the bright side, all of our recruits are officially soldiers. Bad ones, but they're still soldiers. As part of the hospital under construction, we're making a pipe to the brook.
Charcoal supplies: 185 bars. we need more!
Apparently the mountainhomes still haven't gotten the message: we don't want more people!
1: A woodworker
2: A strand extractor, lye maker, and... presser.
3: A weaponsmith. You'll go into our new crossbow squad!
4: An engraver and pump operator
Luckily, that was all.
