Granite, 1

So... Contact with starwound was completely lost. I mean, just lost. Last reports we got, they had just found adamantine. But that was like 2 days. They couldn't have done anything in that little time. We still have a map of where they embarked, maybe we can get over there. They were part of some group I don't remember. I don't even know why the mountainhomes have to find them again. We've been traveling for months. rr

Is this even the right place? Well, we can't go on anymore anyway, might as well settle here.

So, it's:
NRDL: miner/mason (female)
Conan: axedwarf/trader
Cheveux: weaponsmith/miner
Dsarker: doctor/woodcutter/carpenter
G: farmer/butcher
BrickT: farmer/brewer
Conan: axedwarf/hunter/trader

In some random, apparently haunted, forest. I'll call the fort... Starwound! So, we've got all this generic stuff here. Bags, plaster powder, lye, digging/cutting tools, seeds etc. Let's see what we can do. First, let's look at our food supplies:
20x pig meat
20x cave fish
20x duck egg
11x berry rum
16x cap wine
16x dwarven rum
16x dwarven beer
21x dwarven ale
6x dwarven wine
1x iron beer
1x arrow ale

Looks like food won't be a problem for a little while. I just spotted some slimes. Looks like there's some life here. Phantom spiders too, although I've heard stories about where they're found...

Conan immediately threw his crossbow to the ground, saying he was sick of hunting and never wanted to hunt again. Meanwhile, we started by cutting some trees, while cheveux and NRDL started digging. The rest of us had a little chance to talk, and then we began the hauling. Conan always wanted to be an axedwarf, and has some training as one. So I made him a woodcutter for now. We found rock: siltstone. I'll be a carpenter for a bit and build up some simple wooden fortifications.

Slate, 1

Fortifications continue. We're making me a wooden training sword for, well, training. Conan and Dsarker are in love! In other news, I'm ordering a weapon rack to be created for my training. Don't come back until you make a masterpiece, NRDL!
here we go again :D

Felsite, 1

Just saw some grassland scorpions. Those things are freaking massive! Hopefully they just pass through. NRDL just made a masterpiece! I'm telling her to make some chairs and tables now, for our dining room. G is helping out with the building now as well. Oh, apparently G and Cheveux are now also in love.

Hematite, 1

Done with the fortifications for now, it's just a large block of wood. We need a depot. And charcoal for forges, cheveux is complaining about how he can't do any smithing. So I'm assigning him to wood burning. Oh yeah and we're butchering a yak for bones. On a lower floor, a general purpose leather/bone/wood/bar stockpile is being made for now. I'm going to take some time to practice fighting, and have a break from everyday life.

Section of the chapter: Katana's random rants #1
A journal is left open, looks like the owner ran off in a hurry.
So, it was just hematite, right? And it's Malachite now. Every season in summer is named after an ore. Hematite: iron, Malachite: copper, Galena: lead and silver. However, what happens to the other ores? Are the insignificant compared to these almighty three minerals? What makes Galena any better than native silver? Lead's not very valuable anyway. What makes malachite better than tetrahedrite, or even native copper? Does hematite's abundance in igneous extrusive stones make limonite and magnetite obsolete? And what about Galena. It's the only mineral that's an ore of two metals, and not just one: lead and silver. However, it is the only ore of lead. So if we consider galena a pure lead ore for a moment, we'll find that the months create iron, lead and copper. What's so special about this? Why are iron, lead, and copper more important than any other minerals? If it was something like bismuth, tin, and copper, we could say that summer was just the bronze season. Is a metal created by iron, lead, and copper? Dwarves know of no alloy like this. Adding silver to the equation (Galena, mid summer) still gives no interesting results. We cannot even consider this trio of "special" metals good for anything, really.
I'm going to go make some bone bolts for practice. Stupid yak bones, they're worse than horses.

I just got an idea for the next slimelands update.

___

Malachite, 1

Sometimes I wonder if the original 'starwound' was just a dream. It was the year 11 in that dream, but asking Conan, it's only 5 right now. Am I going crazy? Hey, where did the bones go? That demon rat must've eaten it! I've got to order some tank spiders when the dwarves come, we can't have our precious bones wasted. At least they were just yak bones. And some migrants arrived:
1. An accomplished glazer named jaxy who had wanted to be a siege engineer all his life, but had been forced to glaze by his family and friends. We agreed that he could live his dreams here, where there was plenty of wood, so long as he helped out with charcoal making, which he was a novice at.
2. A woodcrafter who was also a decent doctor and mason, named trigg. First thing he asked was if he could be a cook. Wow, looks like we've got a lot of dreamers here. Hopefully there's someone decent at what they love.
3. A high master bowyer who's also a novice armorsmith. She asked for permission to use the forges, so I just said it's alright as long as she operates the furnaces too. At least she's a novice at armoring.
Side note: f***, I'm in love with NRDL. at least this time you don't have a whip.

There was also a kitten, which I am now assigning to guard the bone stockpile from our hellish enemies, the demon rats. I saw some sky jellyfish in the distance, near the brook. Now that I think of it, this is actually the first time I've ever seen one.

Conan finally got around to tanning that yak hide, but then realized it had rotten months ago.

Yeah, I was a bit worried my mod had a glitch and they didn't show up. Same with slimes. Hopefully, we get no zombie versions. This place is only sinister, after all.
Note: An armorsmith/bowyer is now available for dorfing.

I just realized how few containers we have. Our "armorer" will have to wait, she's going to be doing stonecrafting for now. By the way:

IT'S WORKING! OH YES IT'S WORKING! THE DEMON RATS WILL DIE!

Section of the chapter: Cheveux's thoughts #1
I had some free time today, and I was just thinking: some metals seem to be grouped. Ryl and bryl, gryl and duryl, atyl and ethyl. The stronger ones are just purer forms of the lesser materials, ryl's red color comes from hematite mixed into the bryl. Atyl also has traces of iron in it. I believe gryl is green instead of duryl's blue because of malachite, and what seemed to be olivine, which dull its edge. The strange thing is, even when smelted, these colors remain in the ores... Why doesn't duryl turn coppery if malachite is in it? Or ryl gray if there's an iron ore? So much we don't know. Looking at history, I know that the dwarves in fact did not discover these metals, we only gained the knowledge on how to use them from others. But who are these others? I should've asked back in the mountainhomes. Maybe a trader will know.
What if there are purer forms of the metals, beyond what we know right now? Katana has a love of ethyl, he'll probably be interested in finding an even purer version of it. I need to talk to him about this.

___

Galena, 1
We need another cat for the upper level food stockpile. Lizards and demon rats everywhere up there. Hopefully stone pots will make it harder for them to get through. Charcoal production is beginning, although we don't actually have any metal. Cheveux was bored, so he decided to smooth the dining room. Conan decided to cut down trees, although I insisted that we had enough. I think we'll make him a training axe and I can have a sparring partner. I just noticed some flaws in our fortification, it will be fixed shortly. I was walking to our dining room when I noticed that we have sard! I love sard! I also noticed Cheveux, who was smoothing down the dining room. He's still terrible at it, at least he didn't engrave the place. Trigg just made a rather nice cave fish stir-fry.
So, charcoal production is going smoothly, although we have nothing to do with it but save it for later.

Limestone, 1
I'm putting Conan and I on duty for a month, so we can get some training done without being interrupted by people saying we need to haul seeds or something. Jaxy built a siege workshop in the corner right now, we'll get him a better place soon. We also need some beds, I'm tired of sleeping in dirt.

Sandstone, 1
Actually, Conan and I will train until the caravan comes. Migrants!
1. An accomplished leatherworker who's also competent with spears. I think we'll let her remain a civilian, I have a bad feeling about the third person in the squad being a speardwarf. Plus, we have no spears. "But katana! I can make a tr-" SHUT UP.
2. A clothier and cook. She'll be weaving. She brought a cannon slug. Too bad it wasn't a tank spider, we need some vermin killers.
3. A dyer who's also skilled with an axe. However, she insisted that she was retired and wanted to only dye. Well, you're milling too, we have no millers.
4. A high master gem cutter- maybe he can cut those sards we found!
5. A furnace operator. Well, somebody seems to know their place.
6. A miller. Too bad, you're now a mechanic.

That brings us to 16 dwarves.

Section of the chapter: Cheveux's thoughts #2
Well, the merchants knew nothing. One of them was holding an atyl short sword though. What's the impurity that makes atyl blue? There's no blue metal apart from... that cursed one... Back in the mountainhomes we once dropped a boulder of microcline into a volcano, and it melted quickly. So it can't be microcline either. Maybe the liaison knows something, right now she's busy talking to Conan about our trade agreements.

___

Timber, 1
Turns out our gem cutter was also a novice stone crafter. We need some more pots. To add to our food supplies, the furnace operator will be doing some plant gathering. It'll also help when the iron caps grow, and we need someone to process them. The caravan just arrived, Trigg seems to be eager to show them his prepared meals. The liaison tried to interrupt our sparring session, but Conan just told him to wait. And they barely brought any bars of metal? Even then, only non-weapons grade metal? We'll request a lot soon. At least cages can be melted. We'll put the animals in a pasture near the siege workshop. We're going to do a lot of melting. I think I'll move the cat to the food stockpiles, food is more important that bones for now. I somehow managed to sneak off with the merchant guard's atyl sword.

Moonstone, 1
Let's build some rooms for everyone! Meanwhile, our "armorsmith" is also being told to be bookkeeper. Will she ever get what she originally wanted? Meh, probably when we actually have metal. Meanwhile, I'm asking for some leather armor to be made for us. Wait, we have no leather? Merchants, slow down! TRIGG, WHAT WERE YOU THINKING? WHY WERE YOU TRYING TO COOK ARROW CAPS?
It's pretty amazing how good our leatherworker is. So many masterpieces. Looking at our metal stocks, we have a gold bar, a brass bar, a fine pewter bar, a lay pewter bar, a lead bar, a cap iron bar, a bryl bar, a bismuth bronze bar, and a whole 50 units of charcoal. I think I'm going to expand our clothier's area.

Opal, 1
Jaxy's kitten, who had guarded our food stockpiles, is now a cat. Our military will have simple leather armor, for now at least, while we get some more metal. Doren, leatherworker, insists that we only keep masterworks and exceptional armor, the rest should be traded away, apparently they're failures to her. In other news, trigg just ran out of food to cook. We've run out of leather, I think we could kill a few of those slimes out there...

Obsidian, 1
Slimes die very easily. And apparently people don't like to butcher them. Jaxy just asked to build a catapult right next to the sleeping areas for "practice". Sometimes I'm worried about his sanity. And our safety. More about our safety though.

Granite, 2
Conan's having a break so he can finally talk to the liaison. Cheveux was talking to me about atyl, ethyl, and the possibility of an even purer metal. I think it's possible, but how would we get it? Even dwarves cannot simply melt the impurities inside these amazing metals. To work with the metals, we just soften them to a usable state, they're nowhere near melted. Magma seems to have little effect, and if we work with anything hotter, we'll probably kill ourselves in the process. The metals are found in clusters, closer to the center being purer. If only we could find a huge atyl cluster... Dsarker just came running back from woodcutting, screaming something about a wol- "NO, IT WASN'T JUST A WOLF! IT WAS MORE THAN THAT! I SAW THE LOOK ON ITS FACE" shut up! I'll go check what it was.
Turns out it was a werewolf. It was fun to kill it, but seeing that corpse afterwards was a bit disgusting. I guess the phantom spiders did mean something, this place really is haunted. Hopefully the werewolf is as bad as it gets.

Trigg ran out of food again. And, migrants!
1: An animal caretaker (what do they even do?) who's also an adequate metalsmith. Pick up Conan's crossbow and get hunting.
2: Another leatherworker, also an axedwarf. More soldiers!
3: A... trapper? I suppose we'll train him in swords or something.
4: A butcher, and a good armorer. Sorry other wannabes, he's going to be our armorer.
5: A newbie siege operator. Maybe he can talk to jax about getting some training.
6: Urist McTrapper, to the military you go.
7: An adequate glassmaker. Good enough.
8: A talented engraver.
9: A peasant... good at crutch-walking?! Well, you're in the military.
10: A cheese making... woodcutter. Well, you'll be cutting wood.
11: Another glazer. Uh, military for you?
12: A fisherdwarf. Alright, you can fish.
13: A high master metalcrafter. Now THAT's a dwarf.
14: A woodworking swordsdwarf. Sword for you.
15: A leatherworker. We don't need your novice crafts, into the military!
16: Another high master gem cutter.
17: A potash maker. You can be a hauler.
18: A herbalist. I suppose you're useful.
19: Another miner. Can never have enough miners.
20: A tanner. Maybe we'll get some more leather.
21: A bowyer/furnace operator. We could use some marksmen, but we've already got a bowyer. Woodcrafting for you.

That was a lot of migrants. Our population went from 16 to 37, and we don't have enough rooms for everyone! Time to get mining.

Slate, 2

Our dyer was possessed! Should've made him a mechanic like G told me to. Anyway, I'm having a break from the military to carve some bones. Wait, she's a novice weaponsmith? Make sure she grabs the bryl! It's the sharpest edge we have! So we hid all the other metals, sand he grabbed bryl. Good. Also took some horse leather, interesting...
She then comes up with this:

She may not be a legendary weaponsmith, but this sword will make her a legend. Everything's going well now, we've got a breeding pair of sheep for more food too. Apparently our hunter was badly hurt by a slime, we need to set up a hospital. Oh, he's dead. Make a coffin for him, we'll set up a graveyard later. Nobody really knew him, he was a new guy. Slimes are pretty dangerous apparently. We've got to be ready to go out to kill them at any time.

Felsite, 2
Ugh, there's cannon slug slime everywhere, let's keep the cannon slugs in pastures please. I find it amazing that I'm only creating exceptional and masterwork bolts, even though I'm only a skilled bone carver.

No seriously. Probably from spacial sense that I got in military training.

And the elves have arrived. They were disgusted by our mass woodcutting, and we're disgusted by their terrible goods. I suppose we have something to train the recruits with now. They were eager to get some live combat experience, and even happier to be killing elves.

Hematite, 2
It's time to improve our fortifications. Let's cut some trees and make some blocks. Why wood? The elves will hate it. Besides, siltstone is the same color, so not that different looking. The actual barracks will be stone, though.

Malachite, 2
Migrants. The mountainhomes probably didn't get the message that I DON'T WANT MORE MIGRANTS. We've got:
1: A metalcrafter. You're not good enough. You're now a carpenter and woodcutter.
2: A woodcrafter. You're now a hunter.
3: The son of #1 and #2. You're now a child. Wait, you were always a child. Oh whatever.
4: Yet another high master gem cutter. Uh, cut trees and be a carpenter.

At least there weren't many this time. We've got 158 units of charcoal, so I think we can safely start glassmaking without depleting our supplies. Oh, now we need more space for food stockpiles. Let's put a stockpile by the dining room. And then there was a... siege? Uh, Urist, why are those turtles angrily charging at us?
