U mad? 5m?

Moonstone, 1

Note: The year after the month is the age of the fort, the fort starts year 5.

Well, G seems "better". Luckily there are no infections, but there's too much damage for that arm to be used again:

(Dsarker's analysis of G)

Meanwhile, I'm planning out a water supply system, with a large central reservoir. We can use it for everything, from drinking (well, not us. Just whoever's stuck in a bed in our little hospital) to drowning enemies. But first, it must be made. We also need a dining hall, I'm going to order NRDL to make those, after he makes that masterwork. Looks like NRDL finally had a break from his weapon racks to talk to our outpost liaison. I'm telling him to order some cannon slugs at medium priority, and bituminous coal/lignite for coal, high priority. A load of sand too. Finally, low-priority lye, potash and pearlash, along with maximum priority coal and coke.

I think I'm going to tell the miners to dig some larger fields for dwarf caps and iron caps. Oh look, I just dug up an old map of our embark site:

Rhesus macaques. They just *tried* to attack us. It was annoying, but I now have some bones to use...

Well, the dwarf cap farms are expanding. Yeah...

Note: I'm going to do chapters per season like I originally planned. Not enough happening for every month like I just tried. Actually, just on major events.

I'm going to add more to this little "fortress" of ours, starting with the barracks. I've ordered the creation of large amounts of stone blocks. To improve our barracks, we're also going to get some equipment. I'm asking any people with free time to burn wood, and I'm expanding the wood stockpiles.

Felsite, 2
Our military commander has given birth to a boy. NRDL, after a whole year, has not managed to create a single masterpiece. Then the elves arrive, along with a representative. Wow, just what we need. More work to distract NRDL! Now she's going to have to meet the representative. Then she'll eat something. Then drink something. Then maybe have another snack. Then have a break. Then when she's finally back, another merchant or something will come.
I bought ropes, alcohol (they have hopper juice! There's none round here), and all sorts of generic everyday items. I noticed they have a panda, sadly there is no bamboo in the area. I just realized, we're low on booze again. Start brewing more! Bim the dyer was attacked by a badger man while trying to peacefully get a drink from the brook, luckily I killed the beast before anyone got hurt. Apart from the badger man of course. If they even feel pain...
NRDL now seems to be avoiding the elf representative, he's even been doing some hauling instead of talking to that guy. In the end, the elf caught up. It was funny watching that elf run after her, she tried to sneak through the workshops, but it was like the elf knew she was there. At least she wasn't our amazingly sneaky hunter. They have a huge range of animals, I told NRDL to order strong animals for war, and some other stuff like food. In the end, she asked for:
Leopards
Jaguars
Honey badgers (!!!)
Wolves
Grizzly bears
Black bears
All drinks

(notice the honey badgers!)
And with that, it was summer.

Hematite, 2
And like I expected, NRDL is now on break. She's yelling at everyone to bring her snacks and everything now. Not like anyone's actually listening. Oh right, I need to set up the well!
So while I was trying my best to carve some bolts out of these terrible "horse" bones, I hear Urvad scream "SNATCHER! MY BABY!". So on my way up there to help out, I see her mauling the thing.

What is that thing? Asking our record keeper, who seems to now know a lot about history and basically everything, I'm told it's an ancient ettin. I've heard stories of ettins. Giant two headed beasts that kill everything in their path. But apparently, these ancients were much, much worse... When the elves saw it, they didn't just scream. They ran. I know merchants are scared of everything, but this was different. I then found out why.

And it was still trying to attack us. Oh, and apparently Dsarker found a kobold thief, who quickly ran away. Not much I know about that, too busy trying to finally kill this ettin thing. I couldn't even stab the thing to death, they're almost invincible! In the end, it took 3 days of constant slashing to slay it. And that's just because it bled out. I know elves are cowards, but maybe they have a reason to be scared this time...
On the bright side, Tosid the herbalist has given birth to a girl. Hopefully this doesn't mean more of... them.

No seriously, that surprised me. Didn't expect ancient ettins that early, plus didn't expect them to take so long to kill. It's probably the two heads.

Well, Guess what? NRDL FINALLY DID IT. MASTERWORK WEAPON RACK!

I'd like to be dorfed if possible.

Name: Cheveux
Gender: M
Profession(s): Head of Metalsmiths if possible, if not then Weaponsmith and Armorsmith
Personality: Ambitious, a bit crazy about metals (especially the sharp ones) and full of respect for his fellow metalsmiths and military dwarves.

Pretty nice story so far.

I think I'll make you Ustuth, he loves the second sharpest metal in the game, and short swords. :D

I'm trying to get the forges going now, but I want to see what the humans bring. We don't really have much weapons grade material.

11:

Malachite, 2

Well with that ettin thing behind us... Well not behind us, that thing's blood is still everywhere. Anyway, we seem to be out of stone! I suppose this'll be a good excuse to dig out a metalsmith's area. We have a reasonable amount of wood, but I don't think it's enough to melt down insignificant things like crafts. Yet. We also have almost no weapons grade metal... In fact, according to the bookkeeper, we have no bars of metal! The cap iron isn't growing fast enough, next time the dwarves come round we need more seeds.
I created a masterpiece again today! I'm amazed I can do anything with these... horse bones.
So anyway, back to the forges. Cheveux is now the head metalsmith, nothing to do with the fact we have the same goal ;).
So I looked at what we can melt. I bought a bunch of steel anvils, they could probably be melted down into bars at a good rate. There's also that large iron mask the thief was wearing. Although I don't really think it's worth it.

Galena, 2
By the time the caravan arrived, we only had a single bar of steel. I'm going to see what they have before asking Cheveux to do anything. I'll bring some weapon racks and biscuits to trade. We had a bit of a badger man problem, but the human guards quickly took care of that. The humans have gryl, silver, iro- ATYL! THEY HAVE ATYL! YES! Atyl is so expensive... I'll trade an entire fortress for those goods if I have to. The humans had what we couldn't even dream of. Sadly, I couldn't buy much atyl, so I settled for the anvil: 1 whole bar of the precious metal. I'll buy some of their iron, bronze and gryl stuff too. We can use this gryl battle axe for now... I also managed to sneak off with the guard's atyl armor while they were resting after their journey. The merchant didn't seem to notice. Oh, the humans had a "trade request manager". Ah humans, always giving the right names to things. ORDER ATYL. AND LOTS OF IT. If you can, some ethyl too.

Note: the -atyl pick- was worth 5280. 5280. All the crafts they had, 600-1200... I wish I could buy them but we aren't rich. Yet.

I really want my sword, but I don't want to see atyl wasted on poorly crafted objects. So I'm requesting the production of iron weapons until we have a consistent amount of masterpieces being produced. You know, with all this, I think magma would be helpful. I'm going to talk to NRDL about digging down there...

limestone, 2

I'm going to take a year or two just to train with a sword. Conan, stop complaining about a lack of ammunition and CARVE YOUR OWN BOLTS from those HORSES you KILL. And this time if a masterpiece is lost, it'll be YOURS. Anyway, NRDL said it's alright as long as she gets an office. With eight cabinets. And a turkey tied to a rope at the door. A "guard turkey" for "spotting intruders" apparently.

So while I'm thinking about the best way to arrange eight cabinets, a chair, and a restrained animal in the smallest space possible, ezum the speardwarf gives birth to a boy. Then we hit a cavern. I don't want to deal with it right now, so I'm just ordering that we use the closest nearby stone to build a floor over the stairs, and keep digging down. And now NRDL is complaining that the rock she's going to use for one piece of floor shouldn't be moved until it's time to work with that one, although another rock needs to go to where it is at the moment. Then she starts asking about where her office is. Oh and apparently we had some buzzard issues. I don't get why anyone's scared, they're easy to kill.

GREMLIN! Wait, what? Gremlins are found underground, where they try to sneak into your fortress. This one was above ground... And it had equipment. What is this... Well Kadol instantly mutilated it, so no real problems here.

Anyway, I'm going to ask for a large tree farm to be dug out. It'll add to our wood/charcoal supplies, the dwarf caps take forever to grow. Oh that reminds me, NRDL, here's your office:

Oh, and I don't want you known as the "expedition leader" anymore. I'm giving that title to sibrek, who manages and records everything in our entire fortress. And a diplomat has left unhappy? Uh, alright then. Those tall people are kinda weird.

Sandstone, 2

Those 6 spiders that hatched a long time ago have now grown into children! The only differences I see are that they're bigger and don't crawl anymore. Sibrek asked me what we need, so I came around to look at what the merchants have. Sadly, no ethyl for Cheveux. So I just say get every weapons-grade material, and put atyl on highest priority. Anvils too, for melting. I also noticed they had a trap component they call "numerous spikes", looking at picture, it seemed pretty freaking dangerous. So I ordered some. Also, some lye, charcoal and potash. Just cus. I'm also asking for short and long swords, hoping that they bring atyl ones. And whips and morningstars, I've heard stories about those things. And of course, drinks. Just some hopper juice, we don't really have many hopper berries here.

Then another gremlin thief. These gremlins remind me of goblins. I always hear stories about goblins trying to steal from merchants, only to be mutilated by some guard.

Looks like we finally got some dwarf caps, let's turn them into some cap iron. We've had iron caps lying around for so long...  I think it's best that we say only farmers should harvest, to increase how much dwarf cap we get.

Timber, 2

Yeah, finishing our new bridge entrance, and the merchants arrive. I'm sneaking off with some of their guard's equipment as always. Then I notice a kobold thief.

AGH YOU IDIOTS! Don't build the floor on the bridge side first, it'll collapse. NRDL now calls her office a "throne room". Now that's just weird.

From the caravan, I buy more medical stuff (splints/crutches), and all their bar stuff. There's some steel, but it's mostly like coke, charcoal and pearlash. They had the cannon slugs and cages we ordered, and some iron beer. Ah iron beer, most valuable drink ever... I'm just buying whatever, so we can have some equipment. They also have some dwarf cap seeds, that'll be useful.

SNATCHER! THIEF! SNATCHER! THIEF! SNATCHER! SNATCHER! SNA- wait that's it? Anyway, we had a huge wave of thieves try to attack us, but they were quickly killed. Still, there were so many...

Even a wooden stick in melee can kill more goblies in combat than an AUG. While drinking beer at the same time. On fire. With Urist McRetard-who-doesnt-even-know-how-to-use-a-weapon at his side.
