Charcoal is nice but magma is better. Let's try finding it. Meanwhile, more building. Out of clay now, since we seem to have infinite amounts of it.

Felsite, 3
Yet to do anything important. Well, we're starting on some archer turrets near the entrance. Sapphire men arrived again, already. Among the highlights were a nethyl pick and some random arrow that had gotten stuck in the depot. Then a large group of plump helmet men charged at us randomly, apparently it was meant to be a siege. They actually looked sort of dangerous, with this bigger looking plump helmet man leading them, so the recruits didn't seem like they could fight these guys. Let them come to us, instead of us running out there and leaving the place defenseless.
There were far too many ambushes to fight off. Our hunter bravely sacrificed himself by trying to shoot at the ettin bowmen, while the sapphire men fought to the point one had a spear sticking out of him. But they just kept coming... The battle was over, but this seemed to just be the beginning.

Hematite, 3
We're still cleaning up the aftermath, and I'm ordering a ryl weapon to be made for every member of the military. NRDL has asked to join the military, using a pick as her weapon. Considering how desperate we are, I don't see why not.

See why you should have left the aoryl pick alone?

Oh well, try to pilfer one off the next sapphire men caravan, hopefully they won't be too angry at you for having a merchant die.

Diary of Momuz, Manager

There were so many of them... So many arrows... So much blood...
Well, it's over now. Well, not exactly "over", but they're gone. So many wounded, a lot of the military got back up while half dead just to keep us alive. Katana was shot, fell down, and instead of letting somebody rescue him, he just got back up and continued hacking at those two-headed beasts. We don't have enough thread to treat most of the people, so many of us are just lying in the makeshift hospital, hoping that we'll live. Even if we live, will it be worth it? This was clearly just the beginning of our troubles... And the hunter. He hardly knew us yet threw himself out there to buy time. Ilral, we'll always remember you.

Malachite, 3
I can't believe Dsarker chose now to have a break. We've got a full hospital and all she cares about is relaxing? I know you hate helping people Dsarker, but if you don't treat these guys we're all dead! I'm also thinking of ways to reduce injuries, especially military ones. I'm deciding on ryl as the military uniform metal, so I'm ordering for that to be made. The complete uniform of a typical soldier:
Ryl helm
Ryl breastplate
Ryl greaves
Ryl high boots
Ryl gauntlets
Cap steel chain cloak
Cap steel chain robe
Copper shield
Ryl Longsword/battle axe/spear or Gryl hammer/mace

Hopefully this provides sufficient protection against enemies. We finally managed to get some thread for suturing, maybe our wounded will be better now. Quintijn has a badly hurt toe, but insists that he's fine to continue. Dsarker finally stopped being on break when she heard about the new thread. In other news, our well is complete. There were reports of a troll rampaging through the fortress, it seems the caverns had been breached and then ignored. Can't blame anyone about forgetting stuff after what just happened to us. GIANT CAVE SPIDER! The military were merciless after seeing what that monster had done to a poor weaponsmith. In the final moments of its life, it had been given the name Igathkizbiz.
We must learn from this, so from now on the only way down to the caverns must be heavily defended with traps. A farmer started going fey on us, and decided to start screaming for yarn. Luckily, we saved some sheep wool. One of our swordsdwarves was very distressed by seeing the novice weaponsmith die, and has been feeling unhappy ever since. I recently found out that a siege back in the winter has been named "The Roasted Siege". It's ironic, since plump helmet men besieged us.

Galena, 3
I'm worried now. It's late summer, so the sieges are coming at any time. We just got a siltstone ring, nice and simple, from our fey guy. Apparently the mechanics are busy with other things, so we'll just seal off the caverns until they have time to build traps. Troglodytes got in, nothing very dangerous. The human caravan is here now, but I'm not relaxing until the end of the season. An ambush squad could be right behind them, hiding behind trees or something. Or maybe they are trees. Perhaps that may explain the strange flat board-like pink trees in the distance. Or maybe some elf just came along and decided to be all elfy and stuff. I can't decide which is worse.
The humans just arrived, trading went well, we bought almost everything (everything we wanted, we got). The gremlins were back, and they brought trolls. Why do trolls follow them, any one could crush a gremlin... The "swordsmasters" were pathetic to me. I only just noticed a star sapphire where a sapphire man had bravely sacrificed himself for the others. I've only just realized that Conan still uses a training axe. While the slaughter happened, I was supposed to be sparring with Conan. I thought you were meant to be meeting the liaison? Ah well, just get out here and help us.

Starwound's school of dwarven combat, lesson 1: ancient ettin and the bladed weapon
When facing an ancient ettin, what you must first do is sever as many limbs as possible, until they are incapacitated. After this, it is advised to repeatedly attack their heads in a crazy, disorganized manner. Hopefully you somehow get past their helm, otherwise they'll bleed out anyway.
Disclaimer: Starwound's school of combat reflects only dwarven instinct, and does not emphasize efficiency or reliability. Use advice at your own risk.

Trigg's upper leg was cut badly, he'll be alright though. I hope. The ettins are getting through. We can't let them. not this time.

Corpses everywhere, living enemies too. The mutilated corpses of our enemies, and even some of friends, scattered at the entrance. But it's over now, until next month. Cheveux's swords are truly amazing. As usual, a horde in the hospital afterwards. As a joke, I told our furnace operator to take the iron arrows stuck in someone's leg and melt them down. He actually did it. I was also surprised to see Conan in the hospital, since when could anything hurt the guy?
The liaison was also in the hospital, although I'm not sure if it was because he wanted to talk to Conan, or he was asking to be treated:

Later on, the human guard lasher also visited, although he probably just got lost trying to find the depot again. I'm also telling jaxy to set up a catapult facing the entrance, as a temporary defensive measure. What happened to the siege engineer's area? Be quiet. Don't you know what we're going through right now? Most of the military is half-dead, there are corpses everywhere, and all you care about is a little place to hurl boulders back and forth?

Limestone, 3

Everyone's out of the hospital, apart from Quintijn, who's currently being treated. I'm giving my squad a break, so I can make some bone bolts, and Conan can talk to the liaison. There was some master thief or something, I done't really care to be honest.

Sandstone, 3

From this year on, one set of gold coins will be minted in sandstone. Someone just complained about being stung by a bee, but I don't really care.

Timber, 3

Here come sapphire men and dwarves. And of course, another wave of enemies to kill, or get killed by.

What wounds did I sustain?

Also, don't forget, keep any aoryl weapons or the sort instead of melting them down.

Your left hand's skin has some issues (minor, healed almost completely I'm guessing), but your lower body is infected (has been cleaned with soap, and sutured).

Diary of Katana

A child being born always means something. Every time. Something great, or something terrible. We can never tell in advance though.

(run cheveux, run! Before the magma catches up!)

Timber, 3
An axedwarf has given birth. This is the second child in the fortress! This is either a good or a bad thing. A day later, adamantine! Yup, this childbirth was a good omen. Hopefully we can say the same for the next. The metalcrafter then gave birth to another boy. What does it mean this time?
The dwarven merchants have arrived, yet there is no sign of the sapphire men. A few hours later, the sapphire men arrive. Perfect timing. Annoyingly, they brought absolutely no aoryl this time. An ambush! Of lashers. That doesn't look good. Actually, it went pretty well, since the lashers couldn't do anything to the sapphire men. There's a large amount of caravan guards, so I think we're prepared for incoming sieges. Some potash maker started acting strangely. Turns out he's a novice armorsmith, so he grabbed a bar of ethyl and got to work. The month is almost over, but I still feel like something's coming.
Sudden FPS drops will do that to you.

Moonstone, 3
We got an ethyl buckler. Sad, sad, waste of ethyl. At least the thing was worth 288000. Very strangely, nothing. No massive siege or anything, just a few ambush parties earlier.

Opal, 3
More adamantine found, almost none actually dug out though.

Obsidian, 3
Nothing new done, at all. Let's build some magma forges or something. Then suddenly,

I've got an idea. It'll be risky, suicidal, and very dangerous for the entire fortress.  Metalworking is being moved down to the magma, so the former forges will be turned entirely into a bone carving/woodworking zone.

Officially a wrestler, with a pick and legendary mining though.

Btw Conan, aoryl or adamantine axe? I'm going for aoryl sword, even though it's duller.

Diary of Asmel, carpenter
27 Obsidian
We just ran out of wood. I'm really angry now. How do you run out of wood in a densely forested area? Go cut down more trees! And stop wasting all the wood just to make some stupid charcoal. Sometimes I think this place doesn't appreciate carpenters at all. I mean, they even changed the wall material from wood to silty clay. It's all about the masons now...

(Available for dorfing)

Diary of Astesh, Mechanic
27 Obsidian
If we've just hit magma, do we really need to get down there? With some glass pumps, we could bring the magma to us, saving a lot of work. I need to talk to katana, and the glassmaker about this. Right now they have some sort of crazy plan involving a spider, a creature made of coke, and cage traps. Being the mechanic in charge of the cage traps, I'd say that this plan will either miserably fail, or give the fortress a great weapon against our enemies, wether from below or above.

(Available for dorfing)

Granite, 4

Well, another year to go through, strangely nothing happened late winter. We're getting major complaints regarding the lack of wood, so I'm going to send people out to cut more trees. Nothing strange or dangerous has happened, yet... The mechanic was asking about pumping magma up closer to the surface, we'll do that as soon as we finish the !!plan!!. I think we're going to need more tank spiders, so I'm ordering creation of some next boxes. Then suddenly, a planter started acting all secretive, refusing to talk. Isn't this how the glassmaker died...
Well, the guy claimed a workshop.  Meanwhile, NRDL was complaining about how she had the worst gear due to being last one to be recruited. Well, it's your fault for asking to join the military so late! As I said that, someone walked up to me and said that our farmer has started working. With a log. Looks like we're getting another legendary elf-lover. The !!plan!! is almost complete. Only two more cage traps. And then we get an alder scepter. Our swords are worth more than that. Looks like we're low on soap again. Let's make some more.
The main issue with soap making is the lye. We just don't have enough. Although after our hunter bravely sacrificed himself, we don't have much tallow either. Let's make our newly legendary woodcrafter a hunter. At least while the soap supplies are low, we have good, clean water.
It's funny. Our marksdwarf managed to become a novice without an archery range, only through combat drills.

Slate, 4
For some reason an idiot put some bolts in our soap stockpile. Oh right, we have sheep! They're good for tallow! Or not. NO fat there at all... On the other hand, preparation for the !!plan!! is complete. All we have to do now is knock down that wall.
It's now ready. We just have to wait. Ah, here it is, success. Glad you could join us, Reksas.

I have plans for you.

Katana's diary

We've always heard stories of adamantine. Digging too deep. All of that. Many say it's all just stories, but we just found adamantine, right? So many fortresses have mysteriously lost contact, and the last thing we always hear is adamantine. That, or clear glass beds. Anyway, what if we-

Good. More soldiers for the army.

Pffff. Crashes. Last backup is late summer.

12

Alright then, let's deal with this freaking elves.
"Hey Katana?" says Conan.
"What." I reply. What could he want, we have elves to slaughter!
"It's late summer. 8 Galena to be exact."
"No it's not, this is Felsite. The elves just arrived at the fortress"
"Nope, it's 8 Galena. No elves here. Unless you count those skeletons from a while ago."
"Conan, are you absolutely sure about this?"
"Yup. Late summer, the year 7, the fortress's 3rd year."

Oh what is happening to me. Did I dream about the entire thing? The plans to capture forgotten beasts, the elves, the adamantine? I still see the giant cave spider corpse, so at least some of the last year or so actually happened. Wait, Galena. This is before the ambushes happened! I need to warn them! But everyone'll think I'm crazy. Right now, even I think I'm crazy. Everyone's armor too. It's like none of it ever happened.
Then again, did it ever happen? I can't run this place anymore, I'm going crazy. I might as well try and kill everyone, since it'll all just end up as a dream. Let's just kill this liaison. Not like she's ever leaving anyway.

Yeah, I'm just plain pissed now. Loyalty cascade time. I think I know where all the crashes are coming from now, so if we die I can finally get a re-fix. And I'll get updates done faster for a while to make up for lost time.

The humans arrived in the middle of this carnage. Let's kill them.

And now everyone. And I mean everyone. Is dead.

Boring end to a buggy story. I've finally figured out all the bug fixes and stuff (I hope), so let's just try one last time.
