Yup, and I'm going to update the mod too. For some reason it's only turtles that cause issues, the crundle hordes ambushed me fine in another world.

Trying to update, but bay 12 forums are kinda acting up for me, so there'll probably be a big update later.

Section of the chapter: Cheveux's thoughts #2
Well, the merchants knew nothing. One of them was holding an atyl short sword though. What's the impurity that makes atyl blue? There's no blue metal apart from... that cursed one... Back in the mountainhomes we once dropped a boulder of microcline into a volcano, and it melted quickly. So it can't be microcline either. Maybe the liaison knows something, right now she's busy talking to Conan about our trade agreements.

___

Timber, 1
Turns out our gem cutter was also a novice stone crafter. We need some more pots. To add to our food supplies, the furnace operator will be doing some plant gathering. It'll also help when the iron caps grow, and we need someone to process them. The caravan just arrived, Trigg seems to be eager to show them his prepared meals. The liaison tried to interrupt our sparring session, but Conan just told him to wait. And they barely brought any bars of metal? Even then, only non-weapons grade metal? We'll request a lot soon. At least cages can be melted. We'll put the animals in a pasture near the siege workshop. We're going to do a lot of melting. I think I'll move the cat to the food stockpiles, food is more important that bones for now. I somehow managed to sneak off with the merchant guard's atyl sword.

Moonstone, 1
Let's build some rooms for everyone! Meanwhile, our "armorsmith" is also being told to be bookkeeper. Will she ever get what she originally wanted? Meh, probably when we actually have metal. Meanwhile, I'm asking for some leather armor to be made for us. Wait, we have no leather? Merchants, slow down! TRIGG, WHAT WERE YOU THINKING? WHY WERE YOU TRYING TO COOK ARROW CAPS?
It's pretty amazing how good our leatherworker is. So many masterpieces. Looking at our metal stocks, we have a gold bar, a brass bar, a fine pewter bar, a lay pewter bar, a lead bar, a cap iron bar, a bryl bar, a bismuth bronze bar, and a whole 50 units of charcoal. I think I'm going to expand our clothier's area.

Opal, 1
Jaxy's kitten, who had guarded our food stockpiles, is now a cat. Our military will have simple leather armor, for now at least, while we get some more metal. Doren, leatherworker, insists that we only keep masterworks and exceptional armor, the rest should be traded away, apparently they're failures to her. In other news, trigg just ran out of food to cook. We've run out of leather, I think we could kill a few of those slimes out there...

Obsidian, 1
Slimes die very easily. And apparently people don't like to butcher them. Jaxy just asked to build a catapult right next to the sleeping areas for "practice". Sometimes I'm worried about his sanity. And our safety. More about our safety though.

Granite, 2
Conan's having a break so he can finally talk to the liaison. Cheveux was talking to me about atyl, ethyl, and the possibility of an even purer metal. I think it's possible, but how would we get it? Even dwarves cannot simply melt the impurities inside these amazing metals. To work with the metals, we just soften them to a usable state, they're nowhere near melted. Magma seems to have little effect, and if we work with anything hotter, we'll probably kill ourselves in the process. The metals are found in clusters, closer to the center being purer. If only we could find a huge atyl cluster... Dsarker just came running back from woodcutting, screaming something about a wol- "NO, IT WASN'T JUST A WOLF! IT WAS MORE THAN THAT! I SAW THE LOOK ON ITS FACE" shut up! I'll go check what it was.
Turns out it was a werewolf. It was fun to kill it, but seeing that corpse afterwards was a bit disgusting. I guess the phantom spiders did mean something, this place really is haunted. Hopefully the werewolf is as bad as it gets.

Trigg ran out of food again. And, migrants!
1: An animal caretaker (what do they even do?) who's also an adequate metalsmith. Pick up Conan's crossbow and get hunting.
2: Another leatherworker, also an axedwarf. More soldiers!
3: A... trapper? I suppose we'll train him in swords or something.
4: A butcher, and a good armorer. Sorry other wannabes, he's going to be our armorer.
5: A newbie siege operator. Maybe he can talk to jax about getting some training.
6: Urist McTrapper, to the military you go.
7: An adequate glassmaker. Good enough.
8: A talented engraver.
9: A peasant... good at crutch-walking?! Well, you're in the military.
10: A cheese making... woodcutter. Well, you'll be cutting wood.
11: Another glazer. Uh, military for you?
12: A fisherdwarf. Alright, you can fish.
13: A high master metalcrafter. Now THAT's a dwarf.
14: A woodworking swordsdwarf. Sword for you.
15: A leatherworker. We don't need your novice crafts, into the military!
16: Another high master gem cutter.
17: A potash maker. You can be a hauler.
18: A herbalist. I suppose you're useful.
19: Another miner. Can never have enough miners.
20: A tanner. Maybe we'll get some more leather.
21: A bowyer/furnace operator. We could use some marksmen, but we've already got a bowyer. Woodcrafting for you.

That was a lot of migrants. Our population went from 16 to 37, and we don't have enough rooms for everyone! Time to get mining.

Slate, 2

Our dyer was possessed! Should've made him a mechanic like G told me to. Anyway, I'm having a break from the military to carve some bones. Wait, she's a novice weaponsmith? Make sure she grabs the bryl! It's the sharpest edge we have! So we hid all the other metals, and she grabbed bryl. Good. Also took some horse leather, interesting...
She then comes up with this:

She may not be a legendary weaponsmith, but this sword will make her a legend. Everything's going well now, we've got a breeding pair of sheep for more food too.

Felsite, 2

Even more of the forest is being cleared. It's time to improve the fortifications.  Apparently Conan became attached to a shield... Adding an extra layer of wall "just in case". Oh, and I'm building a larger quarry bush plot for trigg to cook with. The elves arrived, disgusted by our mass woodcutting. And we were equally disgusted by their "trade goods". Probably would've completely freaked out if they saw all the charcoal making below ground. Time to give our new squad some live combat training...
Somehow they released a grizzly bear, badly hurting one of our recruits. We need to build a hospital. For now, the area near the barracks will function as a temporary one. One of our multiple "high master" gem cutters has been assigned to soap making. Dsarker says he has:

Severe blood loss
Ability to stand lost
Motor nerve damage
Sensory nerve damage

And his left leg in general is torn.

Hematite, 2

Our recruit got a crutch, and soap. Judging by the damage, he'll probably keep that crutch for the rest of his life. I hope he gets good at using it. There was another werewolf sighting, quickly dealt with. The barracks and hospital will be near each other, on the edge of our wall. As we seem to have run out of stone (!!!), I'm expanding the living areas. That reminds me, we need to actually put beds in the rooms.

Malachite, 2

The hunter keeps complaining that his kill is gone. Apparently when you shoot a slime and tear its skin, it crumbles into a blob of unusable goo. Who knew? On the bright side, all of our recruits are officially soldiers. Bad ones, but they're still soldiers. As part of the hospital under construction, we're making a pipe to the brook.
Charcoal supplies: 185 bars. we need more!

Apparently the mountainhomes still haven't gotten the message: we don't want more people!
1: A woodworker
2: A strand extractor, lye maker, and... presser.
3: A weaponsmith. You'll go into our new crossbow squad!
4: An engraver and pump operator

Luckily, that was all.

Jaxy's diary #1
19 Malachite,
When I came to this place, I wanted to live my dream of being a siege engineer and operator. I got what I wanted, but this doesn't seem to be enough. I have some plans for how we could all get something, a special area for our crafts. I could have a massive range for target practice and experiments. Carpenters could live entirely in the wood they love... Masons wouldn't really change. Being a dwarf is already the mason's dream really.

___

Galena, 2

The humans just arrived. Trigg really wants to show them his dishes, to see what they think. Requesting all weapons grade materials, especially ethyl. I just saw this "numerous spike" trap they had on their list of goods. It looked interesting, so I ordered some. Strangely, one dwarf started acting secretive, claiming a glass furnace, right when he was about to make something anyway. I bought a bit of raw crystal glass to see what would happen.
Nothing. Let's try green and clear... Looks like he wanted green glass. Looks like he's content running around grabbing metal and stuff now, so we'll get on with the trading. Some more sheep were bought, some drinks, all that stuff, and a bunch of stuff for melting down. I just saw one of their numerous spike traps, made with atyl. Even a dwarf would be scared by those things... We bought some of the cheaper (non atyl) ones. They had sun berries! Ah sunshine, best booze ever.
The glassmaker is refusing to do anything. His workshop is filled with drawings, and I keep seeing these squares! If only he were a better artist! We can't give you squares, squares are just shapes! Ugh.  Well, somebody suggested making a "square"(block) out of metal, I suppose we'll try that. Cheveux, you're a metalsmith right? Make a block of lead or something! Oh, he didn't want a block of lead. He likes pig iron. Do we have any of that? Wait, no? S***. Do we have any iron at all? Oh great. Check the merchants. They brought a bunch of stone blocks, let's hope that's what this secretive guy wants...
Nope. He's just sitting there. Check all stocks. Find ANY source of iron. Nothing. Not even a piece of limonite. Sorry my friend (uh, passing acquaintance?), we have no pig iron.

No iron on the map, or from traders, dammit!

There's no way to make something from pig iron in the first place.

Katana's diary
5 Galena,
Well jaxy talked to me about a siege practice area. Seems like a reasonable idea, we can work something out after finishing the hospital.

Limestone, 2
Soo, we're building the hospital now. Barracks too, and military housing. Also, we're making a pipe to a small reservoir for the well, and it should be able to hold 84 units of water. Sadly, our glassmaker who could not get the "square" that he wanted just went berserk, trying to kill everyone. I barely knew him... I was working in a craftsdwarf's workshop nearby, and quickly killed him... Someone make a coffin for this poor guy. And even more migrants! Here they come.

Sandstone, 2
1: A high master woodcrafter. Are you sure you're not an elf?
2: A soaper, useul I guess
3: A high master glassmaker. Perfect timing, we just lost the last one.
4: A peasant who claims to be a good swimmer. Into the under-construction marksdwarf squad for you!
And that was all. For now. I really need to get this message to the mountainhomes: NO MORE MIGRANTS.
Anyway, we're almost done with all the reservoir stuff, and can soon finish off the hospital. More trees being cut for soap and charcoal. I'm also going to build a large burial ground, well decorated and all, for our dead.

Katana's diary
17 Sandstone
Did I just hear what I think I did? Jaxy just complained about having no stone for the catapult. NO STONE. We need more stone. Fast. Before we all go insane and turn into humans! Or worse... elves... On the bright side, I just heard of some deer in the area. Looks like we're finally getting something but slimes. Can't carve slime bones, they don't exist. But I've had a few months on break, we need to get back to training.

Diary of Monom Ragrakust, bowyer (available for dorfing, female)
Ever since I got here, I've been making charcoal. Does a high master bowyer really deserve this? To be stuck with common unskilled work such as wood burning and hauling? Plus, I'm needed to supply our military with crossbows! Katana specifically ordered for a crossbow squad to be made months ago, yet they still have no weapons.

Sandstone, 2 (continued)
Conan just walled himself into the mini-reservoir that we were building. I only realized when the human trade request manager was found standing there, seemingly alone. Then we looked down, and saw Conan sleeping, stuck inside. In other news, Jaxy has practiced to the point that he no longer has to consider himself a glazer. He is now officially a siege operator. We just hit the underground caverns, where the graves would've been:

There's a cluster of impure bryl down there, I think we should go get it. Then we can finally give our metalsmiths some work. We can't see any creatures in the caves at the moment. Looks like there's also some tetrahedrite.

Timber, 2
Hard to believe we're running out of stone. But we never forget, since Conan keeps yelling it during sparring. Looks like the pipe is linked and everything, so we can get this well working. What about my siege operator zone? Later Jaxy, let's finish this hospital first. Oh and Monom the bowyer was asking me about the lack of crossbows, so I told her to go make some bone ones. The mountainhomes have sent more mi- wait, they're merchants. No need to prepare a ballista. Like we even have one... They had pig iron. Pig iron that probably would've saved that glass maker's life...
Well, I basically gave them everything we brought for what little they had. Hopefully this means they'll bring more stuff next year. On the bright side, we got our metal. Oh, and a kobold thief was spotted. Only to be shot right through the head by our hunter. Hey look, more merc- wait, what are those?

They call themselves sapphire men, and they want to trade. What could they have that dw- WAIT KATANA. I NEED TO ASK THEM SOMETHING. wait Cheveux, wha?
"Look at their caravans," said Cheveux.
"What about them?" I reply.
"Look at the metal. Just look. You'll see when they get closer."
"Alright then."
And then I saw it:

I asked if I could touch it. They happily replied, in the dwarven language. Well, not entirely weird, lots of things speak goblin and human. That serrated disk. It was... I don't know what to say. It wasn't very sharp, I've seen steel better than it. But it was so... heavy. I asked one of our commoners (I have military training, so I'm strong) to try lifting it, and the closest he could get was slowly pushing it along the ground.
"What do you call that metal?" I ask.
"Nethyl," They answer.
"Where did you get it?"
"Duryl."
Duryl. They found it in duryl. That's just strange. But then I looked through more of their goods, and I found this...

Again, they let me handle it. It was... I don't know how to explain. Lighter than the featherwood in our stockpiles. When I put it down on the depot, it basically cut right through the wood. No pressure or anything, just right through.
"And this metal, what is it?" I asked again.
"Aoryl," They answer, smiling. If you even call that smiling. They looked like they were made entirely out of sapphire. Looks like they're enjoying answering these questions, seems funny to them how little I know.
"And where did you find this?"
"Ethyl."
Wait. Ethyl? They found this in ethyl? That explains the sharpness I guess. We couldn't buy everything, so we had to leave that nethyl disk. Followed by ambush.

Ancient ettin, according to the sapphire men. Excellent bowmen, not good at anything else. Our military was not fit to fight, so we let the caravan guards do the killing. Annoyingly, they reached the gate (well, entrance in the wall, but it'll be a gate soon enough), so we all had to charge out. The sapphire men seemed to have forgotten their equipment, and beat at the ettin unarmed with their massive crystalline fists. In the end, we won, and I don't think there were any casualties. I'm told a leatherworker started acting strangely. Hey, he's meant to be in the military! Enlist him as soon as he finishes whatever he's doing. Wait, a merchant axedwarf died.

Moonstone, 2
And we got a quiver. Nothing special, just a nice quiver that's well decorated. And the creator isn't even any better. You're not escaping the military this time! Oh look! I forgot, I needed to open the floodgate for the well! The merchants distracted me. Alright, any miner, go dig that single urist of dirt left so we can get something for the wounded.
I've decided how our military system will work: One squad will be the trainee squad, where all dwarves who are not yet adequate with their weapon may practice. Actual military work will be done in squads of five, four who are adequate and an elite. These squads will train until there is need for more squads of five, in which case elite dwarves will be taken from the squad. But, that's all for when we have actual weapons and armor :P We're approaching 300 units of charcoal, which is good. Two dwarves just got married, we don't really know either very well. Just a metalcrafter and a butcher.

Opal, 2
We need more wood. I'm sending people out to cut them, hopefully there's nothing dangerous out there. There were some sky jellyish, so we had dizzy people for a bit, but no major issues. Also, an axedwarf gave birth to a boy. Everyone was back to normal in a day or two. We are to be a barony. I feel the need to elevate Dsarker. However, NRDL seems like a good candidate as well. In the end, I chose Dsarker. We're almost done with the hospital now, water is very slowly flowing into the reservoir...

Obsidian, 2
Well, there was a thief, who the hunter wounded before the military could get there. We were then ambushed by... Plump helmet men. I knew they weren't the nice, innocent creatures the mountainhomes thought they were.

This was followed by a much more menacing ambush of goblins. Someone's pet peachick died or something, but other than that, no problems. After being bored by the time it took for the reservoir to fill up, I ordered the floodgate closed and the pipe expanded. Let's expand our dining hall a little, it's just a single table at the moment.

Old one (crashed):
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Obsidian, 3

We've got 45 dwarves now, but metal supplies are still painfully low. I'm going to have another break to do some bone carving. We should also make another smelter for the ores, our current one is dedicated to melting. I looked outside where the corpses of the ambushers were and found these things... Knuckle worms.
In other news, Dsarker now demands various random storage units and a better room. This is a bit of an awkward problem because Conan will need to have a room in the barracks, while she needs a "better" room. And also, the plump helmet men have decided to try and besiege us. It was hilarious. Less hilarious was the goblin ambush that reached our gates and caused a huge uproar. No casualties, and I still find it funny that we just beat back a siege and an ambush with no casualties and training weapons. Oh and there was some werewolf or something that Conan killed.
Then a gem cutter went fey on us. He grabbed some sards and started working. He made a window out of sard. That's nice, I like sard.

Granite, 3
Another year. Let's look at the casualties:
1 blue peahen
1 glassmaker

We've got loads of clay, soon we're going to do a lot of building.

Can a pick be her weapon?  You said before that you would have liked a pickaxe fighter, and I don't really think you'd like her to have a whip.
