cage help request
« on: June 23, 2011, 08:42:57 am »

Been using cage traps, and now have a room full of naked, shivering gobos. How do I dump them someplace nasty? By the same extension, the last siege resulted in tremendous amounts of fun, and I now have a doctor stuck in a cage. How do I let him out?

A dwarf is nothing but an alcohol fuelled beard with the IQ of a parsnip, and that's insulting to the parsnips.

goblin cages, construct the cage next to a giant pit/spiked pit/magma pit/spike magma pit/... and asign the goblin to be pitted.
as for your caged doctor, just construct the cage then unassign him from it.

A little more detail : build a one tile zone over the magma or 10z drop pit with 'i' and make it a pit.
Or strip them of weapons (or everything) and release them in the arena using a lever for soldier practice.

This last is my own chosen method of disposal, although I don't even always strip them of stuff, depending on how lazy I am and how well-armed vs. how well-armed the gobbies are. Although I only loose two or three together then, with maybe some squishier stuff.

That's after I put one of each goblin type up in my zoo, though. Just the spares get arena'd.

Now if only the peons I'm trying to entertain in the dining room with a crosswalk above the arena floor didn't get scared of the monsters and run away... stupid peons.

Isn't there a very likely chance untamed animals will escape when their cages are hauled away? Or is it just when cage buildings are disassembled?

I... don't know what triggers that actually. I think (from what others have said) that "dumping" the creature in a pit triggers it (so you want the cage to start nearby), and trying to haul them to the trade depot also does. Maybe because in each case the game is trying to treat the cage separately from the animal? Maybe? I dunno.

But anyhow, hauling the cage from, say, a cage trap to a stockpile doesn't trigger that, neither does building a cage that has a wild animal in it. Or at least, I don't think I've *ever* seen it trigger when building cages in zoos and arenas, so if it can happen, it's very uncommon in those situations.
