Military not fighting

My militia commander won't fight.   I keep stationing him and giving him kill orders but he behaves like a civilian no matter what.   Basically, whenever I order him to do something he'd start moving and path away as soon as he'd see a gobbo.  I've seen injured dwarves remove themselves from battle but he is in perfect health.

Based on my experience that's what real officers do as well.

Did you set your military to Active/Training schedule in the alerts?

You need to create a squad for the militia commander, even if he is the only member.

Should you fail to comply, strict !!disciplinary actions!! will be taken. Also, we feel we should remind you that one of the "criminals" on your list is the chief medical dwarf. If he ends up too badly injured to do his job, you will be fired. Out of a magma cannon.

Militia commander is a civilian until he got a squad, yeah. I usually have one of the First Seven as a commander, but don't make him a squad, until his (and his comrades) clothes wear out. The I make a civvy squad from him - consisting of all starting dwarves - and he can't even fight. This is to mimic a RL situation, soldiers and lower ranks officers are supposed to fight, not commanders.
