"Easter Eggs"
« on: June 23, 2011, 02:54:08 am »

Yesterday I was playing Final Fantasy 4 on my PsP and I came across an "Easter egg" (refers to something hidden a developer put in a game) and thought it was pretty neat.

I also recall having come across an "Easter egg" in City of Heroes a few years ago.

On Duke Nukem 3d, you can see a dead Doom Marine somewhere.

In World of Warcraft, this guy has put in so many easter eggs based around himself, you can be certain he's just jerking off in your face. Best of all, he's not a programmer, so he actually PUTS THIS INTO THE DESIGN DOCUMENTS. The best part is that THIS particular easter egg had it's face being constantly humped by a member of the black dragonflight (one of the humanoid two-legged ones) because of a "bug". It wasn't fixed for aaaages. I'm like 99% certain it was the developers getting bored of his bullshit and doing it because it was hysterical.

I remember a lot of these. I've played more old games than new ones, which'll probably show:

Epic Pinball, a pinball simulator for DOS:

apt, a package manager for Debian and many derivative Linux distributions, contains a classic one:

As does aptitude:

Microsoft Office products Word and Excel 1997 contained

Commander Keen has these aplenty.

Command and Conquer games feature these as well.

Speaking of Wolfenstein 3D:

BioMenace, a platformer based on the Commander Keen engine, had a nice one:

ADoM, like most Roguelikes, has many little details left for the player to find. This one isn't encountered during normal gameplay, and is of no advantage, but:

And just to get a console game on the list, some Ratchet and Clank titles have

Since I could go on forever, I think I'll leave this here.

There comes a time when you must take off the soft, furry slippers of a boy and put on the shoes of a man.
Unless of course they don't fit properly and your feet blister up like bubble wrap.
Oh ho ho, but don't try to return the shoes, because they won't take them back once you've worn them.
Especially if that fat pig Tony is at the desk.

There were quite a few easter egg random encounters in the first two Fallouts. From my memory:

Hmm, looks like I'm going to have to play Iji again to refresh my memory. Seems like it's gotten a few updates since I first played it, too. Forgot that isn't so much an easter egg as it is a side-detail, but in fairness you still have to jump through some hoops to get it.

Here's a couple more: Dead Space
