So, I just got X3 Gold- it has Reunion and Terran Conflict. Which one of these should I play, or play first? Any tips?

Also, do please discuss X3 in general. But, remember to put your spoilers in spoilers!

Games are kinda bland and boring.
And no. I do. I go, here's a game. Talk.

Just play Terran Conflict if you computer can handle it alright.  The plot isn't really important in either of them, and overall TC is better, or at least so I found.

The games are fun at first, but become kind of boring after a while
This doesn't matter though, as they have a great community and there are tonnes of well made mods for the game

I felt quite the opposite. At first I felt lost and with very less to do but as the game progresses it gets more interesting.

I preferred TC over Reunion quite a bit.  The storyline is largely irrelevant once you get going...  It is fairly easy to fall off the rails, and it turns into a standard sandbox game after a while.  But TC felt like a more polished, more solid game.

You'll want to take a look at the forums and grab some mods...  I forget which ones now, it's been a long time since I played them...  But I had some mods that allowed me to hire on automated explorers and traders, which were very handy.  The universe is big enough that exploring it all yourself can be nearly impossible, and I had better things to do with my time than simply haul goods around.

Like any sandbox game, you're largely responsible for your own amusement.  Yes, there's a storyline...  And it'll keep you occupied for a while...  But it isn't that engaging, and it does end eventually.

My problem is always that after you've built a couple massively-profitable self-sustaining complexes, built a figgin' ginormous fleet, and conquered everything that looked even remotely interesting, the game loses some appeal.

I only ever played Reunion. And I noticed that once you set up a decent trade route and left it for a day, you basically had enough money to breeze the game through after that.

I'd like to know what TC is like, though.

There are reasons to not do that. Such as, if you aren't actively trading or doing things yourself, your ratings will slowly go down.

It is very... exemplary of capitalism though. You need money to make money, and getting to the point where you can make money takes a long grind of tiny poorly paying jobs. (Or rampant piracy) Once you have enough to make money though, it comes very fast and pretty easily if you set things up right.

Pretty similar.

Getting started is a little rough.  Takes a little while to scrape together the resources to start that trade route running...  And takes a little while to actually hunt down that lucrative trade route...

But, yeah.  Find a good trade route, set the time dilation, leave it running for a day or so, and you'll have more than enough money to do whatever you want.

Building a complex takes a good chunk of change, but is even more lucrative in the long-run.

Eventually you've got more money than you can spend, and that's when things get a little silly.

Reunion has good full bodied mods that are worth looking at. Some of the content in TC came from them. Reunion does have the better story missions to follow. Either way you're going to want to mod and possibly do so outright as some are full universe replacements.

I personally prefer hunting pirates and taking their ships. Although it's a bit risky and kinda costly on the repairs.

Also, yeah, you should definitely grab mods. If you don't want the initial grind, go ahead on cheating yourself some cash to start out too. Just don't go overboard with it or the game will lose the appeal. Just enough for you to get going.

Or just use a custom start.

I've just played vanilla so far, but out of curiosity what kind of things does X-tended do? I don't think I'm going to mod my game for a while still but It seems to be the big name mod of sorts.

Transcend II adds a new universe and storyline for TC. There's some fun stuff like shooting asteroid locking mechanisms to get inside.
